This one was a bit outside of my comfort zone, but it felt great to do it myself! A little messy and tough to get to, but I saved a couple hundred bucks by doing it myself.

Just a quick tip for anyone that may not know. At the bottom right of the rad there is a drain valve. Put your drain pan under it and drain about a litre of coolant from the rad. Then when you remove the thermostat you won't be dropping coolant all over your belts.

KZbin is now one of the better "tools" for DIY auto fixes, glad I found your channel, happy to sub, and heading off to tackle my own ridiculously located thermostat. Wow, this is the most concise descriptive explanation to this code dilemma. I just went thru this last week, with temps down to 55°, to tackle this job. (mind you, it had to be in November instead of August). But it is ideal to get an intelligent prognosis as to the "why and how", on top of the job. Thank you.

Thanks for posting the video. It was very helpful in preparing for the job. Please accept the following as refinement versus criticism for those performing the job later. If you remove the one 13mm nut holding on the power steering fluid reservoir, the lines are flexible and it can be bungee-d out of the way, providing much more room for hands and tools. Enough that I found (despite having big meaty claws) using slip-joint pliers to compress the spring clamp to be not an issue at all. Though, the specialized tool looks kinda cool!

Your video helped. It was easy. Because it is a tight space I actually ended up taking off the thermostat then bending the hose up to me so I can get to the hose clamp easier. I then just put the new stat on then back down into place to screw it onto the engine block. Thanks for posting!

You did a good job explaining the fundamentals of the system. Indeed MPG will fall by 6 to 8 MPG if the faulty thermostat code is not addressed. BTDT I recommend covering the pulley/belts area under the thermostat housing to prevent coolant getting on them. Also, using a new constant tensions clamp is a sound practice.

...oh, one thing I forgot to mention in my first comment is to thank you about letting us know what that screw on the thermostat housing is for, a bleeder valve to let the air out of the cooling system... and also, I quit counting how many times I dropped sockets, wrenches, screws and the like, sometimes ending up in the most unthinkable places!
@fishlovme
@fishlovme 4 жыл бұрын
I changed the thermostat on my wife's care for the second time last night. I lost the socket once, and I lost the entire wrench and socket once! The socket ended up in the drain pan. The wrench didn't go all the way down and I had to reach way down there to grab it! Also, the first time I changed that out on my wife's I turned it too tight and the plastic snapped and I had to buy a new one. I just put the old one back on and it worked for a while, hence why I changed it for the second time when it stopped working again! Real easy fix but still a pain due to where it's located!

I would have liked to see more about what you removed to get to it, like you said it is in a bad place. I came here because of the Code and I hope it is just a thermostat and not a sensor.. PS. did you ever find the socket you dropped :) and hopefully before you started it.

Two things would have made this job easier. 1) remove the 13mm bolt holding the power steering reservoir to the air cleaner housing and 2) drain coolant from the drain plug at the bottom right of the radiator. The hose clamp is easier to get to, you have a little more room to work, and the job is less messy.

It might turn off after it goes through a full cycle (usually 50-80 miles of various types of driving) or you could try manually turning it off, and then see if it comes back on. (It might be like the oil change light, where it doesn't go off by itself but it has to be turned off manually.) Look in your owner's manual and see if there are instructions on how to do this on your particular model. For mine, it's just a few steps that you can do while sitting in the driver's seat.

Why are you using green antifreeze when the fluid that came out was like orange or pinkish
@ChickFixUSA
@ChickFixUSA 5 жыл бұрын
Excellent question! It used to be that the color of the coolant defined what chemicals were used to make it, and over the years the recipes have been altered to improve the longevity of the coolant. Unfortunately, you usually don't know what coolant was used until you start draining it out of your car. This coolant is designed to work with any other coolant (i.e. color) without having to necessarily drain your entire system and refill, and without decreasing the effectiveness of the coolant.
@willd.5406
@willd.5406 5 жыл бұрын
@@ChickFixUSA correct you wouldnt know what coolant is actually in there unless you take some out BUT the coolant that should be in there is HOAT which mopar used up until 2012 and then moved to OAT in 2013. 5:45 the best advice is to get the correct coolant for your vehicle, NOT to get the one that says "works with any coolant". Additionally, you should ABSOLUTELY NOT get the pre-mixed coolant because it's substantially more expensive. I was being a little dramatic there, and maybe you were just trying to keep it simple, but people should know that it's a LOT cheaper to get the NON pre mixed in case they'd rather save money. But they should also know that it's situational. In your specific case, it might actually be best to get the 50/50 mix just because you aren't replacing much coolant. But if it was a complete flush, mixing it yourself might be best because it'll cost half as much.

You can actually google this, but...P0562 = your battery is dipping below 10 volts when idling (should be between 14-15), so your battery may be dying. C121c relates to a faulty anti-lock brake system (ABS) module or power train module, and C2101 also relates to the way the ABS is reading your battery's voltage.

Also, you may want to reconsider buying one from walmart. The brand that they sell isn't great quality and doesn't have as good of a warranty as one you might get from an auto parts store. Plus, at the auto parts stores, a lot of times they will just switch it out for you, which saves you the hassle. My recommendations: 1. Don't mess with the bleeder. I did and when I tightened it back up the head twisted off. Not pleased. Much easier to just let the engine run and keep adding coolant as air works its way out. 2. Remove screws, bend hose up for access, replace thermostat, and reconnect thermostat. All you have to do is make alignment marks on hose and thermostat and everything lines up perfectly. Way easier. 3. Use locking pliers on that clamp. The pliers will easily hold the clamp open for as long as you need to move it out and back into position. 3. Before starting, use a file to dull that switchblade of a clip that will cut up the back of your hand while your work!

It’s a 10 mm socket... NEVER have just one!! Especially with a Mopar vehicle. 10 mm is an elusive little shit that is the Harry Houdini of your tool box. No one knows why, it just is...

ChickFix USA: Geeze, I don’t know the answer to that question. I know that it (or a variation of this method) works on some vehicles, some Chrysler products among them. What years etc I don’t have the foggiest. I have a 12 Grand Caravan and an 05 Ram 2500 hemi and it works. I also have a later Mazda and a 12 SLK, neither of which this method works. Let me know what you find out.
