Wait a minute, WHO'S back in this movie? Doug and Rob talk about some of the stranger choices in Solo: A Star Wars Story. SPOILERS
Solo: A Star Wars Story, or simply Solo, is a 2018 American space Western film about Han Solo, a character from the Star Wars franchise. The film is directed by Ron Howard and produced by Lucasfilm, from a screenplay by Jonathan and Lawrence Kasdan. It is the second of the Star Wars anthology films, following 2016's Rogue One.

To be fair, Darth Maul surviving because he hated Obi-Wan a lot is admittedly pretty dumb once you think about it. Why would the destruction oriented dark side have life-sustaining powers? Either the wound was fatal or it wasn't.

The Maul thing I knew several people who don't follow the show Clone Wars, and Rebels were going to be confused and reasonably lost (even though I was nerding out). Brief summary, he used his intense hatred of Obi Wan to channel the dark side to survive long enough to stowaway and get prosthetic legs. But yeah, I really like this movie, not my fav, but I like it

To all the people saying that they need to see Clone Wars to get the whole Maul thing, you do realise you shouldn’t have to watch a whole tv series or read books or comics to enjoy or get a plot choice in a movie. I don’t recall ever reading a book to like the OT, the prequels or even the sequels.

Gab2671 But here’s the thing, the spinoffs have set themselves up as cinematic versions of the EU. It would be a mistake for the Episodes to include Maul, but these movies can go deeper into the universe. Continuity isn’t a bad thing.

Thinking about this, this is honestly the first time it has made sense to mention him in the movies. He wasn't back yet in AotC (as he returned in the clone wars), and was imprisoned secretly by Palpatine before the events of RotS. Wouldn't make sense in Force Awakens or TLJ for obvious reasons, and Rogue One was busy with with its own thing which wouldn't involve Maul (aside from him having had his final duel with Obi Wan on Tattooine by that point). How is it the creators' fault if someone didn't watch either cartoon series (where he plays a decent part in both) or touched any of his comics which detail not only his part in the cartoons but also the inbetween Clone Wars and Rebels. Star Wars isn't so convoluted as Marvel and DC that no one can tell what is and isn't canon these days, if it has a legends tag its an old story, if not then its extremely likely canon.

If I remember correctly they stated that the reason the reveal was big was that she isn't Enfys Nest per say but her daughter. That's what caught Beckett off guard. He was expecting this other badass pirate he'd probably been running into for years while on jobs so she probably died in an altercation and the daughter took up the mantel.

+Max Kline Nah, I feel like Doug's not the type of person who would like the Clone Wars series. Clone Wars is for bigger fans of the Star Wars universe. Doug seems to prefer media that's a bit artsier with a more cohesive story, which CW certainly does not have. Even though Filoni worked on Avatar, his Star Wars stuff seems less polished, very experimental, often with a ton of filler.

Dangnabit the beginning joke annoys me but I can't help but understand why they'd feel that way considering that the big Maul twist is something that's only explained and shown in the likes of the Clone Wars and Rebels TV series. I'm very happy that Lucasfilm is now really starting to make their canon much more connected with stuff like this, but at the same time, the standard audience that only watches the movies are either gonna be really confused, or make a bunch of jackass articles and the like that will give this movie shit for "reviving" Maul.

Oh don't misunderstand, I was shocked when I saw Maul in the movie as I wasn't expecting him at all, in fact i was downright giddy and it makes me excited to see what they do next with him (whether its the Boba Fett movie, the Obi Wan movie, a Solo sequel, or eventually his own movie.) What made me cringe was them acting like it didn't make any sense in a Star Wars movie when Darth Vader was literally completely covered in 3rd degree burns, missing an arm and both legs and lived. Its established force users can survive some gnarly things especially when one is fueled by rage and the dark side.

I’m not too crazy about the Sabbac Dice origins. Han was so starry eyed and eager to get his own ship, and travel the galaxy. So when The Millennium falcon becomes that ship, he holds it in high sentimental regard. The Sabbac Dice he used to win the falcon from lando, are supposed to hold the same sentimental value which is why when luke hands them to Leia, it’s a significant moment with a deep emotional connection to Han. But it was like “what these dice? Ah I’ve had them for ages, my old speeder had em hanging from the rear view mirror so I was like, hey I’ll hang em in my new, ish ship.” Which for me kind of, for want of a better word, dulls that moment of mourning from Leia in The Last Jedi, from oh yeah, Han died. To, oh, these dice meant so much to Han, just like his beloved falcon. Damn I miss him! It just seems like they missed a great opportunity to incorporate the Sabbac dice into the game of Sabbac that he won the falcon with, and have them be the dice he hangs from the falcon console. This for me was one of the only things I took real issue with. Overall I loved the Movie.

What I was expecting/hoping from this movie was something along the lines of Han maybe trying to join a crime syndicate to survive. He would cheat, steal, and scam his way through the universe then in the third act he’d be asked to do something truly evil and he’d realize he has some standards and somethings he’s not willing to do so he’d betray them and strike out on his own with Chewie making a life in the grays of life. That way we’d see the scoundrel and rogue side of him but see the spark of the hero he’d eventually become.

Having seen the clone wars and rebels, I found the choice very odd. I was expecting a big cameo but showing Darth maul causes confusion to anyone who weren't dedicated enough to watch the cartoon. If they want to use him I think it needed at least the minimal exposition to help people grasp how he survived a fall down a huge hole while being cut in half, then got out and showed up in this movie with robotic legs.

I actually did sort of like the fact this was on a smaller scale than Empire vs. Rebellion. One thing I noticed in the first Crimson Dawn casino scene, there were a number of (Imperial?) officers there and that confused me for a bit but then it made sense when it was just outright said "Yeah, Crimson Dawn works with the Empire". Because the Empire using or working with criminal syndicates isn't big news. In Shadows of the Empire (a video game that came out even before the prequels), the crimelord of the Black Sun, Prince Xizor, is jockeying for position as a favored servant of the Emperor. Now, the Empire doesn't work with all criminals, just the ones that it finds some use for and which might be too big of an obstacle to easily remove. Big, organized syndicates can often make a profitable deal with the Empire even if it's as simple as the syndicate just keeping their crimes against non-Imperial targets and the Empire looking the other way.

I honestly thought it was Snoke who appeared at the end before it revealed to be Maul. And this was just Disney trying to give back story to a character they killed off in TLJ.

I didn't watch the Clone Wars or Rebels series, but Maul surviving from being cut in half in Phantom Menace, at first, I wondered how is this possible as it's another Star Wars story prequel to A New Hope? But on my second viewing, I noticed the robotic legs in his hologram and I got it. Also, I had my predictions of how this movie would go and I did expect Lando and Han to meet and Han winning the Falcon. But I was expecting for the movie to end at the Mos Esley cantina where Han and Chewie met Obi-Wan and Luke, but that didn't happen. Everything else I didn't come to realize, but I liked the film and got some enjoyment out of it, even if a couple of things were predictable and all over the place. Still, Rouge One's better, but this is entertaining enough.

That's why you don't add major plot points tied to other media (cough cough Kingdom Hearts). Even if you watched The Clone Wars and Rebels, it still doesn't really add up, since nothing in either show connected to Maul's appearance here.

The pair of you need to watch Clone Wars for context in regarding this Maul cameo. Saves you both looking ignorant. Either way, they handled this Maul cameo the best they possibly could for a movie audience. Obvious robotic legs, old as fuck, so if this was Maul's first appearance since Episode 1 then I'd still buy the fact that he survived. But for those that have known Maul was alive this whole time, no doubt this cameo was insane. I know for a fact I was speechless.

Of course they never watched the clone wars guys. Even as someone who has watched it my first reaction was "are you fucking kidding me?" Most people are casual star wars fans and the only way for the average movie goer to understand this fucking cameo is to to watch some obscure spin off cartoon not even making any new episodes. Why the hell would a casual audience be expected to understand this, because its not explained in the film and the actual explanation is spin off material that's never been brought up in the films or had an impact on them.

I didn't think the twist with Enfys Nest was supposed to be because she was a girl. That wasn't surprising. I was surprised when she took off her mask because a) she was an ordinary-looking human, and something in the back of my mind assumes that any character in a series with this many alien species who wears a mask all of the time is either a non-human or a human with some sort of distinctive feature or deformity, and b) she was a rather young-looking human, and I would expect any terrorist/bandit/whatever with as frightening of a reputation as she has to have more years under her belt.

My summary of this film is this: It's fun entertaining and well made considering the issues it faced in development. But then pretty much what you guys discussed at 15:40, It does nothing for the character of Han Solo. Between Star Wars and The Force Awakens his arc is not only complete but it's so incredibly satisfying that nothing more was necessary. It would have been better if Han was straight up a no lessons learned Pre-New Hope version of himself for the entirety of the film. The "you're the good guy" line was the final paper cut.

In regards to Chewie pussing out. First, he had a gun pointed at him, with lethal intent. He would have been killed. Two: He was biding his time. Chewie's no dummy. He knew he had backup at the camp, so he was leading Beckett into that ambush. Three: he was going to have to carry the fuel back anyway, so leading Beckett there was killing two birds with one trip. Also, once he had the fuel, he was basically carrying two giant bombs, so too much jostling wouldn't be a great idea. Nor would getting them shot. Chewie was also a war hero. Remember, he was with Yoda and the Wookiee Generals at the Battle of Kashyyyk. My question is why they didn't pile at least those Wookiees into the Falcon.

I just want to say I met the Rob dude on the street. Just wanted to say hi and let him know how much I like their videos and chat for 15 seconds. One of the most smug acting people I've ever met in my life. Pretended to check his watch and pass me along after literally 5 seconds. To be honest his attitude always came across in the videos. These guys need to humble themselves a bit and stop thinking they are celebs. I can't imagine not being friendly to someone supporting my channel. I understand if someone was being obnoxious but dude had an additude from hello.

The movie felt more like the dilapidated, late 70's style world of Star Wars than the new trilogy does imo. Yeah It had lower stakes, and was a tad slow at the end, but i was pleasantly suprised after all the whining and bad press. It had the spirit, it was fun, Han felt like Han, and thats what counts to me.

Matt Erbach I don't know anout the third act. Han suddenly dropping everything to help someome free of charge doesn't seem like the Han Luke has to convince to save Leia. You can say at that time he had debta to pay, but he had debts to pay in this one too but it didn't stop him from throwing away a huge score.
