The stupidity of the aliens from Independence Day is only surpassed by the aliens from Signs. ID: A civilization that is probably millions of years ahead of earth in computer technology is defeated by one nerd's virus he came up with in a matter of a few hours... Signs: Water is acid to them, but they invade Earth, a planet in which water falls from the sky and is pumped into every home, completely naked without any way to protect them.

Water is actually very common in the universe. It exists on many planets, even Mars. And it exists in ice form on several moons in our Solar system. They would certainly know what water is. And we have discovered all elements that can exist naturally in the universe. So we aren't going to discover a new element because anything with like 130 protons would be extremely unstable and not be able to exist in the universe, let alone be the basis of life for a civilization.

Alright here's my thing about "coincidental" meet ups in films. You think that you're given random characters and that the odds are low that they would meet up, however the opposite is true, they're your main characters BECAUSE they meet up. Every coincidental thing that happens in a movie is the movie saying, "look at the odds of this, that's crazy right? That's why this story is worth telling." It's about how you view the film. I don't want to see a movie about every day life where nothing interesting happens, I want to see extraordinary things happen, that's what makes a good story. Not: bob woke up, went to work, and never met or had anything to do with our other main character Jim. That's boring.

I NEVER noticed this before in the last 24 years!! But in that first scene where the mothership flies over the moon, all the "city-size" ships are docked upside down on the bottom of the ship and after they detach later in the movie they turn over to their upright position. That part I noticed of course, but what never occurred to me is this. The ships are GIGANTIC!!! There must be thousands of aliens stationed on each one, maybe more. So are you telling me that thousands of aliens have to walk onto the upside down ships, apparently walking on the ceilings to get to their posts, strap themselves into their chairs(which from their point of view are upside down on the ceiling above them), and then wait until the ship flips rightside up before they can move around??? What kind of advanced race comes up with a design like that?? Then again these are also aliens whose tech can be hacked by windows 95 so........

Let me fill in some of the "plot holes" you have regarding this movie, Doug: 1. The Harvesters were using our satellites. Ergo, OUR technology. That's how David figured out what they were doing and he was formerly part of MIT for eight years before he became a cableman. He used the same signal the Harvesters were using against them. Not to mention, he had access to Area 51's research that had been around since the goddamn fifties. 2. Steve found Jasmine in El Toro because he told her to take Dylan and Boomer and head there in case things went south (which they did). He found her there because that was the first place he would look. He also wasn't rejected from NASA because Jasmine was a stripper. Hell, he could have SUED them for using Jasmine's job as an excuse. 3. The only one that knew about Area 51's true colors was Mr. Nimzicki and he is scolded for not saying something. Both Whitmore and General Grey give him hell for not telling them sooner. He makes the excuse that it was deemed classified but even that doesn’t sway them. 4. Whitmore was a former jet fighter pilot and he went up there not just to give the troops some morale, but also, he's not really the president of anything seeing as 95% OF THE UNITED STATES IS NOW A GIANT, SMOLDERING CRATER! Not to mention the world is about to end, so he might as well die fighting and not wait for the Harvesters to eradicate their last stand and finish the job. 5. I think they meant fire a missile into the Harvester destroyers' cannons.

(Though can you really sue someone for not hiring you as opposed to firing you?) But I doubt they would actually say that was their reasoning, they'd just come up with something else. I mean, this kind of shit happens all the time with racial profiling. Companies never say what the real reason is

4:51 you know he has a point. Why do we think that intelligent life wants to come billions of miles away just so they can blow a backwater planet to kingdomkum?
@Mathignihilcehk
@Mathignihilcehk 2 жыл бұрын
Because any intelligent life that looks at humanity for all of 10 seconds would realize they only have two options. 1) Destroy it all. Leave no survivors. 2) Let humans continually get stronger and stronger. Some day, they will find you. And they may try to ally themselves with you. They may become your best friends and trade with you and help you prosper. But one day, some human will decide they hate the humans that allied with you, and will betray the rest of the human species and destroy everything. You will eventually be undone by the human race. It can never be trusted. It's basically the answer to Fermi's paradox. Where are the aliens? Inevitably, any life that can develop to be as advanced as the space age will also develop to be advanced enough to successfully commit suicide and the probability of them accidentally committing complete and total suicide approaches 100% the more advanced that civilization becomes. However, instead of sending an alien invasion force, they would much more likely just redirect an asteroid. BOOM, virtually all life on Earth ended. In fact, if you thought it was silly for a highly intelligent species to accidentally annihilate itself completely, you're likely forgetting precisely this. With nukes, it'd take scarce resources, there are defenses that can work against it. With an asteroid, the "defense" becomes exponentially more expensive than the attack as time to impact decreases, and it only requires one spaceship with some fuel, which would be a very common occurrence to any commonly space-faring race. In reality, the most realistic alien scenario would be the human race expands to encapsulate the entire solar system. Most life remains on earth, but we have drones throughout the system and can even detect most incoming objects from lightyears away. Well, one day we detect an asteroid moving at nearly the speed of light a few years away. It's course? A direct collision with Earth. There is, unfortunately, nothing that can be done to save the planet. All of humanity must evacuate. We launch a heroic attempt to get as many humans as we can off the planet before BOOM, the entire thing is obliterated. Now, humans are stranded in space... and want revenge. We achieve this, not by fighting aliens directly, no no no. We expand our sensors, locate the alien homeworld, and before we can begin flinging rocks at them, we realize... they already evacuated. And since destroying our homeworld didn't snuff us out, they sent their military fleet to destroy us. And it's arriving in a few years time. So finally, we prepare our fleet to take out the aliens in our solar system and then launch an expeditionary fleet to take out the aliens in their own home system. But they, like a plague, have already expanded to much of the galaxy. And so, the human race and the alien race chase each-other around the galaxy, obliterating each-other everywhere they go, and any time one tries to settle on a planet, the other turns the planet into a magma filled wasteland by hurling an asteroid at near light-speed at it. The distances of the galaxy as so large, however, that many expeditions exchange countless generations of new humans before they eventually arrive. Many of the myths and legends from Earth are forgotten. But one story always remains clear. Aliens destroyed our homeworld. They. Must. Pay.

5:40 Hey, say what you want about Goldblum, but give him a little credit. He did that ENTIRE explanation without a single stutter or "uh". He paused a couple times, but that was it. 12:30 I SO wish you would've played that clip from Fairly Odd Parents of Timmy's dad driving the bus while saying "Curse you cloaking device!!!" because the cloaking device was a sheet that blocked his view.

Doug raises some good points, but I still love this movie. It is really dumb and even its message for a call of global unity and how we're better off may come off as a bit preachy and naive. Especially, considering the world we live in now. But you know what? I love this movie. It's stupid, but it is a time capsule. It has a sense of charm to it to where it knows its dumb, but celebrates it. Plus, that speech; I won't lie is great. Is it sappy, a string of words designed to emotionally appeal to our race's desires for things to be better? You bet. But it's the type of speech that perfectly summarizes the film. I mean the speech went onto saying fourth of July would no longer be an American holiday. If you consider those words, you would have never seen a movie during that time do that. On one hand, it seems rather conceited, very much playing to the self-righteousness of the director and how he views film. But to me that's a really powerful message. Alas, the film with its characters aside and some plot contrivances, I do think its message of collectivism and working together is undermined by sadly where it takes place, the USA, and how Emmerich depicted other cultures. But regardless, I love this film. And I cannot wait for a sequel.

The Movie was the brainchild and directed by Roland Emmerich though. One of "ours" here in Germany... So it's not quite like the Michael Bay Addiction to waving overly large Stars and Stripes flags in the background even during a "Transformers" movie...

@mateo nieto Actually its just American-made movies that are USA centric (which is normal for any movie of any country to focus on its own people the most). But if you want to see world disaster movies in as much if not more prevalence look to Japan. For heaven's sake a lot of fans of Japanese movies (both animated and live action) call Tokyo "the match-stick city" cause it seems every single alien invasion, portal to hell, giant monster, etc. shows up in or comes out of Tokyo. And they did it first. Remember who was making all the Godzilla movies for half of the last century. Giant monsters attacking the world, and all of it from Japan. And again, they did this with a lot of different types of disaster movies. I say if you want a change of pace from USA-centric disaster movies watch some Japanese ones. A lot of them are quite good, and the rest are at least entertaining.
