Channel Awesome 1. What if Hancock was 2 films? The first movie would be about him going from anti-hero to superhero, and the second would be about him, Mary, and Ray. The part about Mary having powers would be revealed in the end of the first movie. 2. What if Power Rangers 2017 adapting more elements from the show? Rita could send monsters to Earth, and ones that pose an internal conflict to the Rangers (Red Ranger in the first film, Pink in the second, and so one until the planned 6 film that focuses on the Green Ranger, because he's last to show up). Then a 7th, movie could be made where Rita is tearing them apart and they have to band together to stop her. 3. What if Shrek 3 was better? You can start by removing Shrek's fear of being a parent because it does nothing for the film and it gets rid of unnecessary moments like the baby shower. Shrek kids shouldn't even be mentioned until the end of the film. As far as the actual movie, everything else can stay the same. Shrek trying to be a good king after the frog king and he fails miserably, then he learns about Arthur and tries to find so he can be king instead, and while he's gone, Prince Charming comes back to take what was stolen from him in the last film. Really it should be, what if Fiona didn't tell Shrek she was pregnant in Shrek 3. 4. What if Joker was the villain in Suicide Squad? You could have a love triangle between Joker, Harley, and Deadshot like it was teased in Batman: Assault on Arkham. And as far as Enchantress, she would appear in a end credit scene where we start with Dr. Moone letting her out. 5. What if Scooby Doo Return to Zombie Island was more faithful to the original? This is an easy one because all you just to do is NOT retcon the first film! It's been said that bring in "real" monster instead people behind mask made Scooby Doo more exciting, and Zombie Island is proof of that in my opinion!

Was she even on the radar in the late '80s, though? This might have been her big debut film, and it just seems to me that you wouldn't want your first major role to be behind clown makeup. Why not Julie Brown instead? Watch SHAKES THE CLOWN to see her both talking in a Harley-like "baby doll" voice AND dressed as a clown in one major scene! I'm glad you did THIS Fanscription because I've often thought Jack Napier/Joker's weak spot for attractive Blondes and his treatment of them may have been an inspiration for Harley Quinn as TAS does carry over a few things from Burton's Batman. The theme, the original design of the penguin, keeping the name Jack Napier as the Joker's real name and more. Maybe I'm wrong but how the Joker makes Alicia "A living work of art" How he breaks her mentally and 1 piece of dialogue in particular to Vicky "It's as though we were made for each other" Beauty and the Beast" Of course if anyone else calls you beast I'll rip their lungs out" His manner towards the 2 of them in Batman '89 is very like how he treats Harley. They wanted to give the Joker a girlfriend and I think this movie could have given them some ideas as to what that relationship would be like.

For a while Warner Brothers WAS seriously considering introducing Harley in the (supposed) fifth Batman film, BATMAN TRIUMPHANT. The idea was going to be that Harley Quinn was either Alicia Hunt (who had survived somehow) or Jack Napier's daughter out to avenge her father's death. Madonna and Jenny McCarthy were both floated as possible castings. By that time, though, Internet message boards and chat rooms had become a major phenomenon, so the studio must have realized that it would take many years of brainstorming before they'd be able to fully please the fans, and that they might have to throw out the original continuity altogether.

If BATMAN had been a cartoon (and I would still really like to see an animated adaptation of it, by the way), the perfect choice would have been Mae Questel, the voice of Betty Boop (on whom Harley appears to have been partly modeled). She was nearly 80 years old when filming began on this movie, but she was still getting fairly major roles, such as in WHO FRAMED ROGER RABBIT and NATIONAL LAMPOON'S CHRISTMAS VACATION. Jean Hagen also portrayed a Harley-like character in SINGIN' IN THE RAIN, and was trained as a radio actress, so she (probably) could have done the voice if she hadn't died nearly a dozen years earlier. But when it comes to a live-action version, both would of course be ruled out. But Cyndi Lauper, Marisa Tomei, and certain others spring to my mind.
@WarhawkBeyond20404 жыл бұрын
Tim Burton's movies have always been crazy, very gothic and a bit wacky at times, so i believe the Harley Quinn character would have fit in very nicely into that world and would have made a great foil for The Joker. I know this choice in casting might be questionable to some people but i think Sharon Stone would have been amazing as Harley Quinn, aside from being very sexy especially at that time, she's a very versatile actress and i believe she would have done a wonderful job in the role. She would have been able to channel the craziness of Harley Quinn and the serious psychologist aspects of Dr Harleen Quinn as well as looking incredible in the black and red costume depending on if they were going to use that design. Either way i would have casted Sharon Stone.

They actually already did this in the BATMAN '66 comics series, which effectively retells the saga of the '60s TV Batman with more modern sensibilities. There we see a very familiar character in the form of "Holly Quinn," a psychiatrist who works with the Joker at the Arkham Institute (which is where the costumed villains are incarcerated in this version in place of the Gotham Penitentiary). It's very interesting to see a thoroughly professional and no-nonsense Harley, completely normal and without even a hint of her future madness (though "coincidentally" attired in a diamond-patterned full-skirted dress and pair of pointed spectacles that you could indeed imagine a "career woman" wearing in the workplace during the '60s); when Harley/Holly DOES eventually go crazy, it's all the more dramatic for that. There were plans to come out with a similar BATMAN '89 series that would revisit Tim Burton's interpretation, but sadly those plans fell through.

Great rewrite, an excellent character fusion and a perfect set of misfit lovers for a classic Burton story. I would have liked to see her introduction scene played out, I can only imagine how frightening it would be. For my own part, Alicia fascinated me. I was fresh off the Adam West show the first time I saw this, so I'd never seen anything like it in Batman lore before, not only was post-scarring Alicia beautiful and sad, her presence alone communicated so much unspoken horror about the Joker's character that I couldn't ignore her. Just being there, wearing that mask, shadowing him like a ghost, it spoke volumes in a few seconds of screentime. Her very presence said more about the Joker than any random throwaway line of dialogue or gratuitous scene of torture and murder could. That he could do that to someone who loved him was horrible, and yet it was exactly the kind of character he was. I had always thought of Alicia as the proto-Harley, or more accurately I thought of Harley as the Alicia character fully realized. The animated series was meant to follow the films in a loose way, and the Joker's abusive treatment of Harley seemed to echo Alicia's tragically understated fate. Of course, I also tend to think of Harley as the validation of Joker's thesis in the Killing Joke, that anyone can become like him after one bad day. As you said, Harley was a product of her time, and whether her creators intended it or not, her character took on a deeper meaning to me in the shadow of these essential Batman stories. The world of Gotham City was waiting for her, there was a Harley-shaped hole in the lore waiting to be filled, and this one throwaway henchwoman character filled it up but good, elevated to staggering heights by the meaning we assigned to her.

Not really. The dynamic of Burtonian romance is usually "two lovers who can't be together because either one or both of them is/are crazy." When you have two crazy lovers who DO mesh well, that isn't Burtonian. That's more like BONNIE AND CLYDE or NATURAL BORN KILLERS.

Interestingly, the very first "Joker girl" to appear on the screen, in Cesar Romero's first TV appearance as the Joker, was "Queenie," a character not unlike Harley Quinn. It's basically Nancy Kovack (from JASON AND THE ARGONAUTS) doing a spot-on Marilyn Monroe impression. Not as scatterbrained as Harley, but she got close. And then, Harley herself did a Marilyn imitation in the animated series episode "The Creeper" (while covered in yellow custard!).

I'm sort of disappointed that the Gotham City Cathedral (an inaccurate name, to be nitpicky, because Catholic churches are always named after people and not locations) didn't serve as a more thematic backdrop the way it did in other movies about evil, such as Arnold Schwarzenegger's END OF DAYS, or the funeral scene in THE DEVIL'S ADVOCATE. The screenwriters just wanted a "Gothic" backdrop for the final confrontation, but a lot more could have been done with it. I can see in my mind the Joker conducting a "Black Mass," tying Vicki to the altar and preparing to...well, "ravish" her in the belief that together they could conceive a baby who would grow up to be the Antichrist. Of course, realistically, I know that BATMAN was marketed as a family film and there was no way they could include a scene like that (though I know for sure they could get away with it in the official "Batman" comics), but you could still do something epic, such as having Batman begin hallucinating (which is something that actually happened in Craig Shaw Gardner's novelization) and seeing images of the Joker from the movie done "medieval style" in all the stained-glass windows. If this is ever remade as an animated film (why not?), that's something I would like to see, along with Prince's unused "Dance With the Devil" track.
@SeasideDetective23 жыл бұрын
Speaking of church, I'm always going to wonder what sort of "wedding" the Joker had planned for Vicki Vale. The cathedral was obviously just the site of the "bachelor party," and the helicopter would have taken them somewhere else for the real "ceremony." Of course, it makes perfect sense that the Axis chemical plant would be the Joker's "church," since that's where he was "baptized" in acid and "born again." So I can only imagine what sort of "black Mass" the Joker had planned, and how much creepier it would be now that the Axis building was a burned-out hulk. All I can say for sure is that, given Tim Burton's "Gothic" tendencies, we'd probably get something that would cause the movie to lose its PG-13 rating!

So what would we have then? Tim Burton's version of THELMA & LOUISE? A "woke" feminist agenda injected into the Batman mythos? Didn't we already get that with the animated series' "Harley & Ivy" way back in the day? And would that even work? I don't really consider the BATMAN RETURNS portrayal of Selina Kyle to be feminist, because as Catwoman she hates pretty much everyone, not just men. And in Walter's version of the 1989 BATMAN, Harley isn't mistreated because she is a woman, but because a more attractive woman came along (and yeah, I guess there's a feminist subtext in that, but it's not obvious).

Circa 1989, I think the obvious choices for Harley Quinn would be Madonna (who was suggested for the character prior to the cancellation of Batman Triumphant, which would have been the follow-up to Batman & Robin). Madonna had already played similar platinum blonde Brooklynesque characters in Desperately Seeking Susan and Who's That Girl, and although she was far more popular as a musician than she was as an actor, do remember that she ultimately appeared in the following year's big comic-strip adaptation, Dick Tracy. Rosanna Arquette, who had a knack for playing kooky, slightly unhinged blondes in films like After Hours and the aforementioned Desperately Seeking Susan, is another possibility, as is Melanie Griffith, who played a nutty, albeit benign, character in Something Wild, and a working-class New Yorker type in the previous year's Working Girl. Both were fairly popular circa 1989, and it's likely that Warner Bros would have wanted to cast a fairly big name. Going slightly younger, and thinking of someone that Burton would eventually work with in Ed Wood and Mars Attacks!, I can see Sarah Jessica Parker as Harley Quinn. Virginia Madsen is another then popular name I might consider, particularly if I was going for sex appeal. Plus she's a great actor and can display a dark side.
@SeasideDetective24 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I've noticed that during the late '80s and early '90s, a LOT of Hollywood actresses were getting typecast HARD, and often for the same types of movie roles. Kim Basinger was considered both for Breathless Mahoney in the aforementioned DICK TRACY and for Catherine Trammell (Sharon Stone's role) in BASIC INSTINCT; Michelle Pfeiffer was offered both roles too, I believe. Sean Young nearly got the role of Tess Trueheart in TRACY, and actually was Vicki Vale in this movie before she fell off a horse - and, of course, coveted Pfeiffer's role in BATMAN RETURNS. In fact, the thing I used to really love about movies from this era, and that I now despise when watching them (although the movies are still very good), is that they almost all seem to be clones of each other. (It was also true on MTV, where Prince was deliberately copying Michael Jackson, etc.) Everybody was trying to do the same thing, and movies were getting clichéd. Indeed, as I pointed out before, in the cathedral climax in the version related above makes Harley VERY similar to Breathless Mahoney's alter ego of "The Blank" in DICK TRACY - a female antihero who follows the hero, villain, and distressed damsel to the top of a tower and inserts herself into their battle. That twist ending was written by Jim Cash and Jack Epps, Jr., the same two guys who wrote TOP GUN; but given that Warren Skaaren, the associate producer of that movie, was one of the writers on THIS movie, it wouldn't be hard to imagine Cash and Epps swiping something from him and Sam Hamm.
@GregOrCreg4 жыл бұрын
I saw Dick Tracy before Batman '89 (I was too young to see the latter at the cinema, since it was rated '12', whereas the following year's Dick Tracy was rated 'PG'), so when I finally saw Batman '89 in 1991 (and I loved that film so much, I watched in multiple times on a friend's video that summer, and made sure I caught it on Christmas Day when it premiered on BBC1) I was struck by how many scenes seemed to echo various scenes in Dick Tracy (of course, if anything was the 'rip-off' here, it would have been Dick Tracy). The scene in which the city's gangsters are gathered around a long table, whilst the main villain (i.e. The Joker in Batman, and Big Boy Caprice in Dick Tracy) demands their loyalty, followed by the murder of the token dissenter among the crime lords, particularly struck me in terms of similarity. Also, the use of music, in both cases utilising two of the most popular music stars of the era, Prince and Madonna respectively, seemed to be part of a (sadly) short-lived trend in comic-book movies (I say sadly because I am a huge fan of Prince and Madonna, particularly their 80s stuff, and loved the vibe their music brought to these films).
@SeasideDetective23 жыл бұрын
That's right, and Madonna also all but imitated Harley's accent for the song "Cry Baby" on her I'M BREATHLESS album, one of the three(!) soundtrack albums for DICK TRACY. It's really interesting to me how casting in movies has changed dramatically since the '90s, especially for superhero films. I remember that they wanted to make a "Wonder Woman" movie way back in the late '90s/early 2000s, and they were considering for the role of Diana a list of famous names that included professional wrestler Chyna, who was a mainstream figure at the time due to appearing nude in PLAYBOY. But then, two decades later, they ultimately chose Israeli actress Gal Gadot; I can't imagine them having done that back then. (Also, Wesley Snipes was originally supposed to be Prince T'Challa in BLACK PANTHER, but the project got put on hold for years and Snipes got too old to star in it, so they had to go with the much less well-known Chadwick Boseman.)

I want to see an animated remake of this movie! THE KING AND I, THE WIZARD OF OZ, and WILLY WONKA AND THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY all got remakes of this type. "Her job is to be....pretty." No, Alicia's job is to play a key role in Jack Napier's transformation into the Joker. It was her affair with him that caused Carl Grissom to set him up to get busted at the Axis Chemical Factory by the police and to be thrown into a vat of chemicals by Batman. Alicia should've been Harley Quinn in this movie but as you pointed out, Harley didn't exist until Batman: The Animated Series first aired on TV in 1992.

Great fun video. I love the casting of Laurie Petty as Harley. I agree with most of your ideas but I would make her more in the background like Jerry Hall's character. I would introduce her in the scene where Jack is watching TV and like you said she is a mob psychiatrist appointed by Grissom but they're sleeping together instead. But she's also married to Grissom so all of that easily works and plays out the same as in the movie just in addition she's giving therapy sessions to Jack. The change I would make is to make her a more active hench woman for Joker, have her go mad by Jack's abuse and she becomes Harley Quinn. I would just have her in the background hanging around Jack like Bob until he ultimately kills her. Also I would have her say the "love that Joker" line.

2:09 Oh but there IS! All you had to look up was "Batman '89 Comic" to get a look at a Tim Burton Harley Quinn. The staff that did "Batman '66" for DC Comics wanted to follow up with "Batman '89", continuing Tim Burton's vision from where he left off in Batman Returns. Such would have included likenesses of of Billy Dee Williams for Two-Face, Robin Williams for The Riddler, Damon Wayans for Robin, and even pencil tests for Harley Quinn, Poison Ivy, and Batgirl were sketched up... ...A Batgirl that reminded me A LOT of Lydia from Beetlejuice, might I add.

@@srstriker6420 That would be a good What If. Ironically ALL the villains were slated to come back in the final movie. While the Arkham Knight game was the one to see it to fruition, Tim Burton had a similar idea to bring Jack Nicholson back as, "Nightmare Joker". A Howard Stern Scarecrow was to have gotten Batman with a fear Toxin and he would've been harassed by an imaginary Joker... which would have eventually lead up to an imaginary scene in a courtroom where all of Batman's past movie villains were the jury.
