WHAT IS THE ATHEIST EXPERIENCE?
The Atheist Experience is a weekly call-in television show in Austin, Texas geared at a non-atheist audience. The Atheist Experience is produced by the Atheist Community of Austin.
The Atheist Community of Austin is organized as a nonprofit educational corporation to develop and support the atheist community, to provide opportunities for socializing and friendship, to promote secular viewpoints, to encourage positive atheist culture, to defend the first amendment principle of state-church separation, to oppose discrimination against atheists and to work with other organizations in pursuit of common goals.
We define atheism as the lack of belief in gods. This definition also encompasses what most people call agnosticism.

it seemed more likely to him that god's chosen people *knew* about modern metallurgy allowing them to create the rivet in the ancient world. Of course, as Jim pointed out, that still doesn't solve the problem of it being an obvious design flaw if this was intended to be a boat. This reminds me of mormons believing in ancient wooden submarines. This show is always about the true power of confirmation bias. It's amazing how even the smartest of us, like Linus Pauling or Ben Carson etc, can still easily fall victim to the most credulous thinking.

People can check out the SS Wyoming on Wikipedia, the largest wooden ship ever built that was only about 75% of the dimensions of the fabled ark of the bible. It was never seaworthy because it flexed too much and took on water all the time. It was eventually reinforced with steel and had permanent steam powered bilge pumps, but still foundered and sank while in service. Not too mention that the replica at the Ark Park is built around concrete pillars. Funny how modern engineers had to tell Ken Ham that they couldn't build a boat that big out of wood even if it never had to float on water.

Yes I have very little time for people who can believe in a supposedly benevolent supreme being capable of creating the wonder of the universe but, seemingly unable to predict how his ape like creations would turn out, has a hissy fit with them and yet cannot think of a way to magic away the undesirables, so drowns them along with all the innocent children and animals. It's funny how this god has such very human limitations.

@The Unknown, Jesus is mentioned in the Dead Sea Scrolls and by Jewish Historian Josephus. Not too long ago they found a rock carving in Jerusalem which recounts Jesus casting Demons into Swine. @@sandersson2813 Yes; the caller believes that a hunk of ancient wood with metal rivets in it must be the Arc, but Jim is saying that's impossible, because a wooden boat with metal rivets in it would cause the wood to scrape against the rivets and leak and sink. Therefor, the Ark, if it did exist at all, could not have had metal rivets in it. Of course, this is just one of many reasons why the story is bullshit, but I really enjoyed hearing Jim zero in on this one specific reason.

I am absolutely baffled by so called intelligent adults who accept the ark crap, I was 8 or 9 years old when I realised that it was garbage, I live in Hull, a city in the Uk where ships were built and was the largest fishing port in the UK. I used to go to the shipyard and watch the ships being built by experts and the teachers were telling us that an old man and his untrained family built a gigantic boat and filled it with animals. I even asked some of the boat builders if it was possible to build a boat big enough to take all the animals, this was just after we had a lesson about the ark, to a man they all laughed and said it is a stupid story and it wasn't possible, one of my friends when I served in the army was a shipwright and I asked what his thoughts were on the ark, he also laughed, he said a boat like that wouldn't survive the launching never mind a flood.

For the sea to rise to the tops of all the mountains on Earth as the bible says, it would have to rise 29,000 feet in 40 days and nights. That means that rain would have to fall at a rate of about 20 feet a minute. Even if you grant that "the fountains of the deep broke up" so that the rain only had to fall at 10 feet a minute, That's still like being at the bottom of Niagara Falls. I worked as a research assistant/archaeologist for about 3-4 years.. and we used to dig shovel test pits at pre-determined locations on our projects. The idea is to either dig down 3 feet or 1 full foot into subsoil (subsoil being the original soil in place 5-6 thousand years ago, depending on where you are, etc). Separate out the test by layer and sift through each one, looking for artifacts. At the end, you bag what you've found, if anything at all, and write out the details of the test pit in a log, noting how deep each layer was, the color and type of soil, depth, etc.. Subsoil, generally speaking, is usually light brown and pretty sandy but can often be confused with FILL layers used in construction. This is a very longwinded way of telling a story about a co-worker who once found a plastic crucifix in one of his test pits. He claimed he found it in 'subsoil'.. When I pointed out to him that he just found a crucifix that predates Jesus by about 3 thousand years, he turned red and said.. "shut up".. lol. Obviously it was in a fill layer. But this concept speaks very specifically to this guy's claim of newer metal being found in something that's supposed to be thousands of years old. Just isn't possible. It's called the law of superposition.
