A gift someone gave us for our wedding was a handmade basket (made out of recycled wood paneling). They couldn’t afford anything else. We didn’t need a gift, we would have been happy for them to attend the wedding without one but they felt obligated to bring one. We still have that basket with pretty plants inside a clay pot inside the basket. That man who made the basket is dead now but I think about him when I see the basket. It was a very thoughtful gift.

As a former makeup artist, you couldn't imagine how many ""friends"" suddenly remember you when it's wedding season or Halloween, coming with the excuse of the portfolio. Like, hell no, if I want to add more photos i'm going to decide all the artistic choices, since makeup, hair products and transportation cost money. I'm so done with entitled brats disrespecting every arts/creative job. We didn`t study to do things for free.

Really, you didn't? How weird... (end sarcasm) I studied Journalism, and specialised later in the creation of magazines and websites. I also have a BA and MA in history, so sometimes combined the two (educational work or writing courses for young historians). The amount of times I've been asked to work for "portfolio" "the mentioning of your name on our website" and more is too innumerable to count. And my expertise and educational background was rather extraordinary to say the least. But even if not... It is freaking ridiculous. I only lowered my rates for foundations who worked with subsidies, because they truly couldn't afford more (And when I considered the project important enough). Problem is; diploma or not, our talents and experience is simply not taken serious by many. After all... anyone can write a text, right? P.S. Hairdressers in my country actually rarely get these comments so I'm surprised this does happen in The States.

When my first college roommate/bff got married she asked me to be a bridesmaid. She just asked us to choose a black dress I would wear again and liked, because she hated the idea of us having to buy a dress that we'd never wear again. She lived in NY and I lived in Philly, about a 2-3 hour drive. So she knew I couldn't help out too much. I drove up for the bridal shower, a month before the wedding to share in that pre wedding festivity. Even though, I lived farther away than most of the wedding party, I still wanted to participate and support her. Her mother made it a point to show me off to the whole family, when I arrived. She introduced me to everyone saying incredulously, "She's a bridesmaid and she drove all the way from Philly to be here for today, as well!!" Making sure everyone knew how appreciative and grateful they were that I took the time to be there. I did get to help pick the dress. She had narrowed it down to 2 and had pix of them. She and I always had similar tastes. So when I instantly gasped and chose the gorgeous strapless one with bright hand embroidered flowers on the bodice and full skirt, she was so happy, as it was her favorite, as well. It was still a very traditional white wedding dress with pops of colored embroidered flowers. She was married in a flower/herb garden outside, so the dress was perfect. The wedding was beautiful. And though her older sister was a bit of a brat on the day, it was probably the loveliest wedding I ever attended. When I hear these stories, I feel so lucky that that was my one and only bridesmaid story and it was for the best bride😊

Girl, my friend I went to high school with had a low-key wedding, and the most they asked for was spending money for their honeymoon. Everyone decided to pitch in $50 (there was ~70 guests) and we sent them off with enough spending money for their honeymoon. They purchased every guest a small item from their honeymoon destination. It was super cute and super thoughtful.

Got married 3 years ago. We did it in my parents backyard, we had a bouncing castle, giant Jenga and a food truck. No photograph, just regular cameras everywhere. We didn't ask for gifts and the music was basically a radio with a Premium Spotify account (I know, fancy right?). You don't need money to get married, just fresh air and witnesses.

Now THAT is sweet and memorable! I love it! I like the down-to-earth low maintenance type wedding! The only thing I'd worry about in a back yard type wedding is rain or nasty weather. Using premium spotify account for the music is perfect! **What I'd like is an old fashion dj who spins records - like Johnny Fever!** I'm an old soul who likes that kinda stuff! :) Wedding guests bring their albums and we get a "Johnny Fever" type DJ to play them records.

Congrats on your wedding! It sounds perfect. Here's to many more years of low-drama happiness! My husband-to-be and I sized up our mothers, KNEW that independently they are lovely women, but between them they would turn our wedding into a nightmare as they wrestled for who got to be in charge. So we eloped. $70 marriage license, $50 to the judge which she donated to charity, 3 friends and a bunch of fun photos where the judge let me slap the handcuffs on my hubby. A week later we told everyone that we were married. That was 15 years ago now. We did have a lovely reception eventually in my MIL's back yard with close friends and family, and by that time both of our mothers were just laughing about it and free to enjoy themselves. Strongly recommend that to anyone who doesn't want their wedding to turn into a circus!

Wedding gifts were originally meant to help young couples build a home with the appliances and necessities (because people used to get married young, often without living apart from their parents first). If you already have all your household needs left, why TF does anybody need to buy you Gucci bags just because you decided to get married? what?
@amstreater
@amstreater 3 жыл бұрын
Exactly, people forget what the purpose of wedding gifts was supposed to be. Plus weddings used to be local and relatively small (I mean, I'm guessing) not these huge affairs with hundreds of guests and thousands of dollars of flowers. People used to spend their money on a marriage not a wedding, and gifts were a gesture from loved ones to help them out. People forget that gifts are GIFTS not an entrance fee.

@@amstreater The royalty and nobility used to throw giant weddings and invite people 'under their care' to join in the celebration and enjoy good food, everyone else had smaller weddings or a wedding with the entire church congregation so there's a lot of people there, but only like 10-20 are there specifically for the marriage. Now church attendance has gotten lower and the age people get married at has gotten higher it turned out like this. You want a full church but aren't really a believer? Then you invite 200 people to fill the place up. Can't afford that? Ask for money.. I'm basic, I just give a box of assorted chocolates and 100 bucks at any wedding I go to. And a result of poor parenting, which comes from never being told "NO", always having a parent who blames others when her daughter is the guilty one, etc. It's normal for a Bride-to-be's nerves to be frayed, but seriously, they forget that the #1 thing to remember is that she's marrying the love of her life & it's not about spending a ton of $$, parents mortgaging their home, who can buy the most expensive gives, has a wedding bachelorette party that rivals in the money spent on the actual wedding. Unfortunately this seems to be what entitled young people expect. How about if they were paying for it themselves? It is possible to have a very nice wedding without breaking the bank. I know I did it.

They had 4 kids which they could only afford because they had a little land they used as a horticultural garden. Their wedding gifts were things like curtains sown by their elder sisters. @@notyourdamnbusiness8795 I often see those who have the most money make a lot of smart financial decisions. They can buy whatever they want-expensive or cheap. But, they’re smart about it. So, buying that woman $400+ gifts means you’d have to make a financial decision that impacts you personally. It also depends on the person you’re investing in and their attitude. And, again, as Charlotte said, the bride does exclude her groom and therefore does display bad financial behaviour. The demanding and selfish bride would be off the rich people’s list, because why invest if they don’t gain anything and only receive spoiled and selfish behaviour?

Listening to these makes me SO grateful to my lovely bride of 35 years! Now, we did ask for hugs from the guests of our wedding... And they more than delivered! Some did give us money, a little less than $500, that we used on our honeymoon (Our honeymoon spot got rained out and flooded so we hid out in a hotel for the rest of our honeymoon) and we had a wonderful time. I honestly think that if either my wife or me was to be as self-serving and greedy as these folks our respective families would have nothing to do with us.

Sounds like you honeymooners got rained IN, and that sounds wonderful! I know you have sweet memories. The most fun wedding I've ever attended was in Mexico City. What a party! The couple spent a lot of money to make sure that their guests had a wonderful time, and we did. One tradition I loved was when the best man took off his tux jacket and walked around with a jar full of safety pins. Everyone took pins and used them to pin cash to the best man's white dress shirt. It was a huge wedding, hundreds in attendance, so his shirt was completely covered in dinero! When he had all the contributions, he walked over to his best friend, the groom, and literally gave him the shirt off his back, and they hugged. It was so beautiful!

I was the DJ for a friend's wedding (she paid and fed me she is **not** the entitled one here) and let me tell you, the mother of the bride was a piece of work. I knew this going into the event from lots of stories from the bride. MotB was actually the bride's aunt who raised her (and from my understanding was a complete jerk about it her whole life) and favored her bio kids over the bride (even when the younger son got his teen gf pregnant). Her loss, the bride is a beautiful soul and one of the nicest people I've ever met. SO yeah, MotB is a jerk, but I did not expect her to try to back out of the mother-daughter dance. At the ceremony. Without telling the bride. Instead she told **me** and then asked me to not tell the bride, said she wanted her to be surprised when she was left out on the floor while her husband danced with his mother. Needless to say I did not keep that a secret, 100% told the bride ASAP and her new father-in-law danced with her instead without giving the 'mom' time to try to pull her stunt.

The couple didn't have much money so I was kind enough to furnish the bride's wedding dress and made her wedding cake. Then after the wedding I find out that the bride was upset that I didn't bring a "gift" to the reception. I guess the dress and cake didn't count.

In the US, cash gifts should be returned if the wedding gets canceled. If it is postponed, though, there is no obligation to return, under the premise that the wedding WILL be happening in the near future. In this case, though, since the bridezilla publicly stated she is spending the money on purposes other than the planned wedding (including medical expenses, a trip, etc.), I think people MAY have enough grounds to take it to court and win. In other words, this bridezilla is shooting herself in the foot by giving all those excuses, fishing for sympathy!!!

Right??? My mom works as a cake decorator and she had to call a woman about some issues with her cake order (whoever took the cake order wasn't a cake decorator who knew about some of the regulations). Despite my mother being very clear on a pretty alternative that she could do, the lady acted like she was super confused and didn't know what my mom was saying, then proceeded to go, "I'm sorry. I'm just flustered. I want my wedding day to be perfect and my friends aren't doing what I assigned to them," or something like that, and it's like, okay. If you guys talked it out and planned something and they aren't doing what they said they'd do, then yeah it might be shitty. At the end of the day though, it is YOUR wedding that you should have thoroughly planned and saved up for. Not to mentioned that it seemed like she ordered the cake with special instructions later than she was supposed to. Some of the things she wanted required ordering weeks in advance, but she decided to call a little over a week to order it.

Asking for more money after she blithely spends the first bunch on a vacation. And wants extra donations so her second honeymoon can be even more extravagant.

It was also because everyone took that time off already and it was up in the air if they were really even going to reschedule the wedding! And yeah, to take the $30k donations and go on an early "honeymoon" (basically just a free vacation!!!) and not put that into the NEW wedding??? That's just a huge middle finger to everyone else.

I'm so glad I'm gay. When I got married, there were two grooms and no bride at all. We didn't have a gift registry. We never mentioned gifts unless someone asked us what we wanted, in which case we asked them to bring food for the reception as the gift. Yes, we had a potluck reception, and it was great. We just provided drinks (no alcohol). A friend baked the cake, and other friends brought other food. No drama, no stress, just lots of fun!

How do people learn to be that entitled? I feel bad even at the thought of a gift registry. It feels tacky. And yet some brides have the audacity to ask for something that’s AT LEAST $400? Insane.

If was going to that wedding then I would make a point of buying the bride something that costs $50.00 and wouldn't inform her beforehand. Fuck that shit, how rude!

I like the bridal registry. It makes it easy for the guests to pick something that the bride and groom really want. Instead of a tacky ashtray! ( do they even make ashtrays anymore?) But putting an inflated dollar amount minimum, and expecting each guest to spend $400 or more is absolutely tacky! It’s not the bride or groom’s place to dictate the gifts they will receive! If I get invited to a wedding of people I kinda know, but are not really close friends, or very distant relatives, my limit is $50-$75 for a gift or cash gift. I think that’s appropriate. If it’s someone I really love, like a close family member or friend, I will go much higher. But that’s my decision. It’s not to be dictated by the happy couple!

Right? A gift is something you give from your heart, not an Amazon's cart.

@@lindab424 Personally there would be zero chance of me attending a wedding if the bride posted something like this. The entitlement needs to be rewarded with no gifts and no attendance. That being said, it would be pretty hilarious to see her face when she opened up some gucci or noras box just to see a kitchenaid spatula.

A gift registry isn't really tacky, in my opinion. It is merely a suggestion of things that the bride and groom need (small appliances, towels, bedding, etc.) to set up their new marital home, and helps to avoid people buying the same thing. What I did was pick a lot of things in varying price points, so that even if someone could only afford say $10, they still could get us something we needed and would appreciate. There certainly was no expectation of fancy/expensive gifts from everyone, nor was there a set minimum amount they had to spend.

If your wedding is cancelled you’re supposed to return the gifts, read any etiquette book/website from the past EVER.

I love the brides that think feeding vendors is such a horrible thing. “I’m paying them good money, why should I feed them” well hun, the photographer has been with you for the last 6 hours do you want them leaving for an hour to grab a bite to eat or have a pizza delivered to the reception. “

I would love to feed anyone i invite to my home as a hostess, I just don't know where this etiquette stops and starts as most times our places of work give us a break and during that break it is up to us to figure out what we'll eat. If someone says "your break is at this time please bring a lunch and snacks." then I don't think that is a big deal as that is already our culture for the common workplace. Might I add, I still think it's great to provide a meal with the break. I just also don't think you're a bad person if you provide the break and refrigerator space only.
