Absolutely agree with good tools being worth the money, especially the ones you use a lot. When I was a mechanic one of my mentors said “good tools don’t change much, they just get more expensive, so buy em when you can.” That being said, pro tip about Snap-on ratchets and other hand tools: you can get Williams which is a Snap-on industrial brand and has literally the same mechanisms etc for like 1/3-1/2 of the fancy name price, and you can get it from Amazon or Zoro. They even have boxes. Worth looking into.

Your car look like my car, 1990 M3. When I bought it in 1993 it had less than 20k on it...but nearly every panel had been repaired or replaced. The only paintwork I have done on it was in the engine bay and around the tow hooks...wonder why they were so crusty!? It was used primarily in SCCA, J Stock, I believe. It has been a driver all of these years, as many track events that I can get, true and original assuming you include damage and repairs. Love honesty.

It is kindof cringe watching someone track one of these ,but it is what they were made for in the end. I think when I get one Im going to get a more or less stock one if I can find one. The valve cover and intake manifold with the paint flaking would bother the hell out of me til I got it addressed. You should get them powdercoated. That is one beautiful track car. What kind of power does that motor make? As I get more and more knowledge about engine technology, I find it interesting how engines of similar size and era but from different manufacturers got different results with their different designs. BMW got significantly more power out of their 2.5 liter 4 cylinder than Porsche did out of theirs. I'm hoping to get my newly rebuilt Porsche 2.5 higher compression pistons, hotter cam etc to a dyno soon. I doubt it will compare to that thing though.

That would require Alpha N as well. I have that stuff on my 90 m3. Something to be said about simplicity/stock’ish. I need to have a laptop with me in case...
@wmwnwmn3 жыл бұрын
@@peterandersen6515 piggyback alpha-n is the old way to do it, and it’s finicky. A modern stand alone EMS running a MAP sensor would remove all of the finicky issues running alpha-n has and it could be tuned with much much much (3 muches) more fidelity.
@peterandersen65153 жыл бұрын
@@wmwnwmn Yes, I wasn't clear. What I meant was, an evo 3 setup, maybe with cams and some other minor improvements is far easier to live with day to day and on the track than a full on ECU replacement. My car has a Maxx ECU with: throttle, intake air temp, coolant, exhaust, crank & cam sensors, ID fuel injectors and ultra coils blah, blah...it's got all that plus. I did it because of a bad battery charger...really. I made the mistake of turning on the ignition very briefly while the charger was connected which cooked the standard Bosch ECU. I tested the charger on another stand alone battery (super smart!) and it about blew up as well. A close friend of mine in Spain has a lot of experience with ECU's and E30 M3's specifically. He specified the ECU and components and 'encouraged' me to figure out how it all goes together. It started simple with just the ECU plus crank and cam sensors. Well the cams looked bad on the #1 intake so I ordered some Schrick cams which lead to an investigation into the pistons (my engine had been apart early in its track days by the previous owners), then cam sprocket mods, then pistons etc, etc. 11 months and $$$ I am fairly new to the ECU scene as mine is a fresh build, only first run in october. My experience with the local E30 crowd is that those guys with all of the above ECU and gadgets are always fiddling with a laptop in the driver seat...and now I find myself doing that. A stockish setup works well without messing with numbers. For ultimate HP, maybe not as good but if you can only achieve max HP for a run or two on the dyno, what's the point? And this leads to the original post "Bro, you need a carbon airbox for that 2.5L so much!". If this is a pure track car that runs WOT a importantly I would like to see the HP numbers difference between the standard intake and the carbon intake although that would be hard since there are so many different carbon boxes and manufacturers. Good holidays!

When a plastic impeller fails, coolant can still flow through the system. When a metal impeller fails, it seizes and prevents coolant flow. That's why they are plastic.
