I just want to say that Seve Morris is like no engine guy I have ever delt with in a very good way! I had a local engine shop by me put my spiral locks in BACKWARDS so when I started my engine it destroyed all of my cylinders and pistons on my brand new $25k in parts alone 496 BBC roller/stroker engine and they admitted that they messed up but refused to do ANYTHING for me because "it is a racing application." This was in the late 90's s so yes that was a lot of money especially since I wasn't even 21 yet. A man that stands behind his work is a man that everyone should be happy to work with, good job Steve Morris!

Hi Steve, my thoughts, I do not like the wastegate pipes pointing to the gound, they appear too close to the turbo inlet and if on the street (or track for that matter), wastegate relief may blow dirt up off the ground to be sucked into the turbo inlet. Is there something not fitted that I am missing maybe? This is the second hung up valve in your vids recently. Is there a way to have a .030 deep scroll line cut down the inside of the guides to allow a little more oil for stem lube while maybe also allowing for guide to not tighten up so much when it gets hot? Just a thought as you are on the bleeding edge of technology here.................
@samsonian7 ай бұрын
Now while I agree the wastegate pipes present a potential FOD (Foreign Object Debris) problem, the problem SHOULD only present on the dragstrip. Why? Because you have to be a special kind of special to not filter up your inlet during the “drive” portion of drag’n drive events…so the only time this should pose an issue would be at the far end of the track or playing around with 2-step checks in the pits or on the way to the start. In other words, yes; I don’t like the position of the screamer pipe either.

Couple questions for y'all. Wouldn't it be to his are anyone's advantage to direct the exhaust to the rear of the car, because of the shear amount of air velocity coming out of the pipes would help two ways. One it woukd assist in pushing the car forward as a jet engine pushes whatever it's attached to, and secondly it would clean the air turbulence up it's causing as the car goes faster and hits more resistance the faster it goes. With all the exhaust exiting aimed out each side it's makimg like an dynamic force acting like an air curtain for the air it's trying to slip through with the least resistance as possible. With it shooting towards the rear of the car creating a slipstream effect and actually sucking the air in front of it into this slipstream giving it a more efficient aerodynamic efficiency. Just my thinking after being in the business of building high static high volume ductwork all my life, and seeing how such things greatly effect the air flow static pressure and total volume of air moved by small changes such as those mentioned PS It would be very interesting to see what effects the changes in a before and after effects in a actual wind tunnel with the smoke and streamers attached to the car at speeds similar to run down the track

My most likely guess was that maybe the rocker was against the stem instead of on the top when it was tightened down and it shoved it over into the guide hard enough to make a spot in the valve that then heated up and seized after some running. Probably would have popped right into place after the first rotation of the engine but not until after the valve was marked/damaged.

Steve, how do you check your guide bores? if you're pinning them, even if you're using deltronic pins its only giving you half the story. See about investing in a small ziess CMM so you can trace the actual guide bore straightness, size and shape of the bore. Seems like you may be experiencing some out of roundness on the bores, causing a pinching of the stem. just a few thoughts.

Just wondering whether the valve guides are notably thin wall? I’ve had one similar snag with a guide that I know didn’t start going in quite dead straight to the head bore, which distorted the guide a wee bit, just introducing a slight flat spot in the guide bore. It really didn’t take much, when I was fitting it I knew that it wasn’t 100% true pretty much straight away and just biased the mandrel to correct it but the damage must’ve already been done. I figured that the final ream would have dealt with any possible minor imperfection. In my case it didn’t actually seize but it did gall the stem and there was a corresponding pair of witnesses in the guide, a locally burnished spot where the hole had distorted in and a longer witness area up the bore on the opposite side. I’d also have thought that valve rotation would have caused all around galling on the valve stem but it didn’t, it had opposed gall lines similar to yours. I found it after only about 20 mins total running because we decided to strip the head to revise the intake ports having discovered a new trick on the flowbench that had worked well on another motor. Perhaps a tramline or two forming early on prevented the normal rotation, not sure, only guessing. Thanks for putting out your content, warts and all! I’m retired now but watching you working through the problems helps keep me feeling involved with the job I loved.
