In the 70s, my mother would make cheese and onion pie at the end of the week if money was a bit tight. With the cost of cheese and butter these days, I don't think it counts as a cheap option any more!

Never even heard of this before, yesterday I was drawn to a random video of some one making Cheese and onion pasties, then today this pie. Exactly the same filling too. Love watching people eat real cheese, not what we call PVC (plastic)cheese here in Australia. I don’t think this would work with processed cheese to be honest, but taste is a very subjective thing, so I am told. 😊 Thanks so much for sharing Mand here in New South Wales, AU, it’s been cold, for here and this time of the year. It’s been raining and pretty miserable for 3 or 4 days in a row, and we expect a couple more days of it, to come. This pie sounds just right for this kind of weather. I can’t wait…..

Interesting isn’t how so many countries make what is essentially the same thing,Poland’s pierogi,Jewish knishes,Moldovan stuffed potato pastries,bourekas from the Middle East and even France does potato stuffed puff pastry.The more you learn the more you realize just how similar we all are.Peru ‘s potatoes covered in cheese sauce,as they are the first home of potatoes they have so many potato dishes.My local supermarket sells packages of dried Peruvian potatoes.i like baked stuffed potatoes like this with cheese,and onion,it’s more practical for me as I live alone,and since I have retired I don’t eat as much as I did when working in a hot kitchen,and running,up,and down stairs all day,even in the underground trains there are lots of stairs,most station don’t have escalators as they do in London.😊

Cheese and onion pie is pure comfort food. I used to make this at the school I work at but it wouldn't go down well these days kids eat different things now. I'm going to make this and eat it with baked beans.

I do the same ingredients, but thinly slice the spuds ( use spuds you could mash, not new ones!), and onions, grate the cheese, then layer them in a baking dish with the cheese and onion, ie, spud, onion, cheese, spud, onion, cheese,and so on, then pour enough whole milk on to just come to the top, then bake till the milk has absorbed, the cheese is brown on top and melty and saucy inside, and the spuds are tender. Great as a meal with your favourite veggies (sweetcorn is yummy), or make it to accompany sausages, or homemade meatloaf, or just scoff it on its own! To vary it a bit, add a little ham or cooked bacon into the layers (not too much... salt!), and you can, if you like, top the final cheese layer with thinly sliced tomato.😊

I'd make a cheese, potato and garlic pie. Iknow garlic is a member of the onion family but I prefer garlic to onion 😋
