I guess Gordon Ramsay is someone whose criticism you should not take personally. Corrections sometimes do sound harsh in the professional world.
@samm1809

I think if most people did/do know that, then Ramsay really isn't that bad In my opinion. There seems to be a 'good reason' every time he yells or insults people, whether it's time wasting, bad cooking, money wasting or customers being screwed around. If you don't have a voice in your head that is as demanding as Ramsay, then it's probably not a good idea to be a chef anyway.

"Exec. Chefs are always stern and for good reason." - what is the good reason? The way he treats his staff is not tolerated in practically any other industry....... Let's face it, all they're doing is cooking food. Even in jobs where people's lives are on the line e.g. doctors/nurses, the way he talks to staff is not tolerated, so any argument about "he's just passionate and trying to get the best out of them" just doesn't fly.

In response to Jes, from a American point of view, he seems to do the classic Marine Core break you down then build you back up. It must be incredibly difficult working with a chef who learned how to cook the wrong way or has a lot of bad habits. He is harsh but in France where he was trained your suppose to come back fighting even harder when your scolded like that. In America most people would just break down and cry, I don't think they understand it's suppose to motivate you, not shut you down. I like the UK version so much more because it's more personal and Ramsay gives 100% for that week he gives you. In some episodes he even takes a step back and says ya know I might be loud but I'm here to help you. Some people take his attitude as combative instead of supportive.

This is what I need to hear right now. Recently taken over a kitchen that was all pretty much frozen bought in shit. I'm slowly working round the owners to do everything fresh and not only does the food taste better but it does seriously hurt when something goes wrong. Before if someone complained I'd be like "well yeah course it's shit it's frozen crap" but now if someone does I actually really give a shit and not only want to offer something different but take a look at what the problem was in the first place. I'm working longer hours but just feeling so much better in myself and when I hear Ramsay say stuff like that I know I'm on the right path

Gordon Ramsay is the perfect Behavioural Therapist, best in the world by effectiveness. And this reward from diligently fulfilling a vocation is so undervalued in every sphere of the modern world, not just in the kitchen.

Maybe most of you have not seen the full episode.. The guy that "yelled" at Gordon is the General Manager of the restaurant and during Gordon's visit he told him that everybody would step on top of him and that he needed to find his voice, and make himself present during service. (Basically that it was fine to raise his voice at somebody as long as it was to increase the guets's experience.) So when Gordon came back to the restaurant, that was his way of saying hi to him.

Shadow Chaser On its own, cleaning isnt that tough. Having worked in a restaurant, however, after 11 hours in the kitchen you tend to take some liberties when it comes to cleanliness. Still, not an excuse for disgusting kitchens.

johnny krishna "talking of ignorance. Gordon keeps pigs as pets in his back garden, which he affectionately names after other TV chefs, eg, Delia Jamie, etc. Then he cooks and eats other pigs, calling it pork. He might as well be cooking up his own friggin dog and eating that! no wonder hes got deep grooves in his forehead.(CHINESE MEDICINE, intestinal issues))" So every farmer, everywhere, who dares to name his livestock, is somehow ignorant? Of course, the irony of someone calling out another on 'ignorance' while, in the same post, all-caps-ing 'CHINESE MEDICINE' is probably hilarious enough without being called out, but there it is anyway.
