It's ridiculous to say that women aren't as good at chess than men Because of sexism as if someone is forcing women to play certain losing moves in their games
@orlock207 жыл бұрын
It has to do with how women are brought up. In Saudi Arabia, women aren't allowed to drive. In other places, women aren't even allowed outside the house. Then there is the case that few countries educate their females. Sexism around the world does lead to a smaller pool of women that could participate in the tournaments he plays in.
@Rafi-be2ij7 жыл бұрын
orlock20 thats not sexism (obviously excluding places like Saudi Arabia, but to my knowledge there aren't really any male grandmasters from Saudi Arabia either so that is pretty irrelevant) the same way women aren't usually brought to love chess men aren't usually brought to express emotion or go in to fields like nursing (and that is if I except your premise that the field people go in to in adulthood is dictated by nurture as apposed to nature which is a premise I am not convinced is true). But even if I except that premise men still usually end up with the much shitier jobs that are much more physical and/or stressful in nature so if any body should be complaining it should be men.

T Riddle For all those hyperventilating feminists out there let's have a look at the definition of 'sexism':'Sexism or gender discrimination is prejudice or discrimination based on a person's sex or gender.'Stating a fact is not 'prejudice'. And the fact is that the overwhelming majority of men play better chess than women, just as it is a fact that Judit Polgar - and she alone - can beat 99% (or even more) of all male players. But any general statement deals with general facts, not rare exceptions. Cornered by the interviewer's questions (almost cringing in a way sometimes) Nigel ventures onto the dangerous grounds of drawing analogies and making other statements that are difficult to substantiate, also when he praises women. ('Women have better verbal skills' he says. Proof, please?) It would have been safer not to stray from the original statement, that men simply play chess a lot better. Anyway I'm sure the late Bobby Fischer - who was not so gentlemanly as Nigel Short - would have given this matter very short shrift...

All of these people saying that it has to do with how girls are raised, rather than an inherent difference between males and females, look at the Polgar sisters, who were raised from a very early age to be chess players. Polgar has beaten Nigel, but she can't touch the men's world champion. She might win a game, but overall is dominated. There are actual differences between women and men, no matter how much people try to pretend it is down to environment.

Judit herself had peaked at world #8! At her peak, I would not say that she would have been dominated. I agree that she does not stand a chance against the current World Champion Magnus Carlsen, but neither do most males players either. The likes of Magnus, and Alireza for example, are rare generational findings. There are likely other females far more talented than Judit to come, but we will hardly ever know if they are not exposed to chess. That is where the statistical argument comes from. If fewer females are exposed to chess, then we are less likely to find such a rare generational talent.

On a number of occasions, Nigel Short stood up for the rights of women, like he stood up for the rights of players in general. To name a few, he opposed having the FIDE Women's Grand Prix in Iran and then the Women's World Championship in Iran where even during play, all the female participants had to wear a hijab. He opposed having the World Rapid and Blitz in Saudi Arabia and managed to change the country in future years, where players from Israel were not allowed to participate. All he said was that women are DIFFERENT to men, and pure facts that in the top 100 players in the world, only 2 were female, Judit Polgar and Hou Yifan. This is a fact, not an opinion.

The best way for women chess players to demonstrate that they are the equal of their male counterparts is to be able to compete with them - something which they have continually been able to do ever since competitions began. At that we can either begin to work out the reasons why or else lie and pretend that the reality is otherwise. Short is in the former camp no doubt the right on media is in the latter. Something that nobody objects to, is that women supposedly have it harder and chess environment is a sexist one. True, chess is sexist, but in extreme favour to women. Women are encouraged by small age, they get the best trainers, more prizes, more medals, more opportunities to play in relation to their strength, more scholarships in universities due to chess, etc. Also the bad jokes among men are incredibly harsh when they are directed to men. Some times they are downright illegal and they are offered casually with huge laughs. And men are men enough to take them all in and respond on the board to silence opposition, while women NEVER have to do that because everybody is so courteous to them and their fragile psyche, either in fear that they are going to be discouraged or they just want to have sex with them as there is no other chance anywhere in a 2km radius around a chess board.

@thelimey3514 жыл бұрын
He has got his facts straight, by your reckoning men would earn just as much as women on the catwalk if there were more of them trying - whereas in actual fact the men aren't there because on average they earn so much less. People are more likely to stick with something if they are successful at it.
@lisejl4 жыл бұрын
@@thelimey351 Doesn't that prove op's point? Men are less inclined to model because male models get less pay, fame, and are ridiculed more for their choice of a career > Women are less inclined to play chess because pro female chess players get less pay, fame, and are ridiculed more for their choice of a career.
@thelimey3514 жыл бұрын
@@lisejl No, it doesn't, women do NOT get less pay, in fact they have the ultimate advantage, because unlike the men they can play in the women's category (to date a waaay lower standard) or they can play with the men. Men obviously don't get that option. If a woman elects to play with the men and does well she gets a LOT more publicity and fame (and inevitably sponsorship) if she does well than a comparable man would. With being a model it's about demand (which is fair), whereas chess it's all about results (which is even more fair !).
@lisejl4 жыл бұрын
@@thelimey351 Right, but those women's leagues have significantly less prestige and are mainly looked at as an effort to encourage more women to play. Just by prize money alone, the FIDE Women's World Championship had a prize of 500k euros, the main one had a prize of 2 million euros. Sure, a woman playing well with men will get more publicity and fame, but that just makes sense given the rarity of that, even if it means a woman with less impressive results will get more attention for being a woman. To the point of the original poster and your modeling example, men might be less likely to model because they're paid less, but that doesn't mean they're inherently less capable of being a model, yeah?

Your right, chess isn't an accurate way of measuring intelligence, however truth is in chess there is usually only one top move ( there are multiple ) but at many times throughout the game there is only one very good move, no other options. Both males and females as human beings are capable of finding that move, the problem is however women aren't encouraged to play chess.
