Driven Car Reviews With Tom Voelk

With a bladder busting range of 440 miles, the impressive 2024 Chevy Silverado EV RST packs a punch. It's all here- Fast 350kW charging, dual motor 4WD, 0-60 in 4.5 seconds, four wheel steering, air suspension, vehicle-to-home power ability and Super Cruise. Quiet, comfortable and surprisingly nimble there's a lot to like... so long as you have $96,500 to spare for a pickup truck. Tom Voelk and John Voelcker team up and spend a day with the Silverado EV. They have some thoughts to share, especially about the new interface.
Tom attended a press event sponsored by General Motors. Opinions remain stubbornly his.
CORRECTION- The interface screen is 17.7 inches, not 17.1 if that makes a difference in your purchasing decision.

Too pricey, yes. Great vehicle for those who can splurge; insane top of the line technology, cool design(subjective), insane performance compared to super cars from a decade ago, coold off road capability. @Rome1017Lights
@Rome1017Lights 28 күн бұрын
Yes it's badged as the RST but the ICE version doesn't compare when it comes to standard equipment. The EV is specced above what an ICE High Country would be. RS/RST trim level isn't even across all Chevy models. Base on some, mid range on others and top of the line in this.

At least if you are going to hobble the better qualities of a pickup truck by saddling it with the issues that come with an electric motor, Chevy by far does the best to minimize the inconvenience and problems for the simple reason that they know how to build a pickup truck that people want to buy. The Silverado EV (or even the Rivian) are what the Cyber Truck should have been but were to pretentious to admit they don't have the knowledge or expertise to build.

Jeeeeeezzz... four tons? That's insane. Any plans for an electric Colorado or similar small truck? We have solar and plan to shift to EVs, but I just need something that's practical for homeowners stuff -- some hauling, some light towing. If I need to drive across my back yard to move a bunch of brush or something, I don't want to leave huge ruts behind me. This just seems like an exercise in overkill. Maybe I should look at the Maverick hybrid....

Looks like a really nice truck. I agree with the others here, the interior doesn't match $96K. I'll wait for a used GMC Sierra Denali version for half price. Also Supercruise is nowhere close to current FSD... yes it does highways and a few secondary state highway routes, but that's it - there level of intelligence isn't even similar.
@Nebula1701
@Nebula1701 28 күн бұрын
700,000 miles of mapped roads. Also most like Super Cruise because of its proper monitoring system. It doesn't need to be completely smart as long as it does its one job well. GM will be introducing Super Cruise with LiDAR soon that will give it access to 95% of roads.
@Cttechexpress
@Cttechexpress 27 күн бұрын
@Nebula1701 it's still going to be limited to very basic functionality of staying in the lanes and stopping and going with traffic, something I was able to do in a Kia with Comma AI 4 years ago. Not to mention how few GM vehicles will be equipped with that LIDAR package to begin with, by that time at the current rate of improvement Tesla will be at level 3 or beyond. I don't mean to sound like a Tesla fanboy or anything, but the FSD pretty much drives itself driveway to driveway now, parks itself, drives across parking lots by itself... then we get these nonsense comments like Mercedes or GM or Ford have a better system. It's laughable. Look up FSD v12.3.6 driving on KZbin
@DrivenCarReviews

I've driven both techs. Personally, I think SC works better for the most part. FSD is good... until it isn't. So the driver is often times on edge . SC is more confident and doesn't surprise the way AP and FSD does. Try it. I think you'd be impressed.

@DrivenCarReviews I have no doubt supercruise does well on the highway. I just think it's capabilities are much more limited than FSD. In my experience FSD has been basically flawless on the highway as well. It's hard to compare because Tesla's FSD is improving so rapidly - it's worlds better than it was even 3 or 4 months ago, and in another couple months at the current rate of improvement we've seen, it will be basically fully autonomous aside from the legal responsibility of the driver to pay attention. I wish GM luck, I'm glad they're at least paying attention to self driving tech. You should try Comma AI, that system plugs into a $25K Toyota/Honda/Kia and does what supercruise does. I've done hours hands free.

Oh please, the Ford Raptor costs this much and I see them around. The problem for Chevy is if they make a profit on these? Just wait until the Cybertruck gets out of the Foundation series (a 20k up charge). Would you get an 80k AWD Cybertruck or a 96k RST? They are both great trucks but except for range and midgate the Tesla dominates. The range is the big thing. Chevy just threw in an enormous battery pack.

The weight on all of these electric trucks is just insane. @@Thunderbolt-ws7qm it doesn't mean that at all. Insurance rates are based on hundreds of factors- most of them based on your risk of causing liability to others, the most expensive part of insurance for providers. Believe me, they're making money on my $1600 because chances are very low that I'll even file a claim.

@Cttechexpress: You implied that your reasonable insurance rates are attributable to your vehicle choice. Do you believe your vehicle's qualities will result in a lower frequency or severity of claims? My thoughts: The avoidance technology is likely no better than that of a recent model Toyota Corolla (producing a similar frequency, other things held equal). Also, the expensive materials, manufacturing processes, lack of repair facilities and knowledge, along with added weight - will increase the severity of both collision and liability claims.

@Thunderbolt-ws7qm yeah maybe people who drive Rivians have low insurance risk. Maybe Rivians having advanced driver assistance, a front crumple zone the size of a Honda Prelude along witn a low center of gravity, and a 5 star+ safety a crash rating have been determined to be less likely to be allow the occupants to be injured. We'll never know exactly without a direct comparison for the same driver. I also own a Model S Plaid, which is older and worth slightly less, and insurance is 50% higher in that.

GM's Steve Warner for being the EV program engineering manager does NOT know ev terms. 205 kwh battery? How have customers put in or used around 212 kwhs. It does NOT charge at 350 kwhs, it charges up to 350 kw (not kwh). Steve Warner has a 50kw charger on his HOUSE, WOW. He must have three phase 440 volt with a 115 amp breaker to power a 50 kw DC fast charger in his home. I think he must have miss spoke! 19 to 22 mph on 50 kw charger! That is terrible! Oh, a 50 amp kw, what the hell! Ok, for non engineers, he has a 240 volt plug with a 50 amp breaker and a 9.6 kw EVSE. 240 x 40 =9.6 kw. Steve Warner, please say your terms correctly as a lot of EV drivers know ev terms. This was not a good look for you.

Why do other EV makers have this mode but Chevy doesn't? We need a lockable air conditioned cabin with 12V power for as long as we want. That's the entire point of EVs, so you can do that.

Can we talk about the elephant in the room? Tesla is asking $120k for the current loaded Founder’s Edition of the Cybertruck. What are you getting for $25k more? One could argue FSD has more capability across all roads. And you get access to Tesla’s superior Supercharger network. Otherwise? The Chevy seems to have a lot more flexibility in cargo carrying, and the massive battery nets you far more range. If you want to go as far in the CT, add another $16k to the CT price to get the range extender - eventually - and give up a massive chunk of your bed. Yes, the Chevy is left efficient. But I think a lot of buyers will look at price/range between Silverado and CT and see the Chevy as superior. Too bad Chevy ditched phone integration. I think many buyers will keep GM off their list until they wise up and add that back in. Otherwise, I think Chevy nailed it, even with the price. As Tom said, they hit the sweet spot. Curious to see how much lower priced lesser models will be.

I mean the car is over 9000lbs, so let’s say you fully load it with heavy set passengers equaling 1000lbs… that’s only about 10% of the cars body weight. The effect should be minimal in comparison. So maybe you get 400miles vs 440miles. But that’s just an educated guess, I would like to see a real world test.

so in an accident and youre in a normal ICE vehicle that doesnt weigh 8500 pds, isnt this kind of thing going to demolish a normal vehicle? and isnt this type of weight going to tear up road, guard rails etc? and who is going to being paying for the extra wear? Is the insurance going to be way more because off all that weight hitting smaller, lighter vehicles? There are a lot of ifs with these EVS, and i dont see the need for a truck this big. Everyone used to complain about the size of sedans/coupe back in the day, well this thing is bigger, and will never be used for its intended purpose. Someone will just drive this to work. Oh and the Price? Theyve got to be kidding....very few people can afford $100k for a truck...how bout some normal sized coupes and sedans?
