Easy to follow video especially for a beginner who wants to change oil on one of these. One thing to note is it does not have to be dexos certified only has to meet the requirements of that. Car makers can’t tell you what oil to use only the requirements that are needed. Again good video ! So many oil change videos are shaken and you can’t even see.

I am surprised to see this 2.0L Turbo 4 cylinder taking so much oil ( I put in 6.5 quarts to the full line in my Equinox 2.0 liter this week ) however, I am also glad to see that it takes 6.5 quarts as the this is still a small engine for a mid-size SUV and the Turbo needs clean oil. If the oil change was let's say 4.5 quarts you would need to change the oil more often. As it is being the engine oil is performing two functions (engine and turbo) 6.5 quarts will let owners have more mileage between changes. But from many data points these small engines with a turbo are unforgiving if you do not change the oil when needed. Many videos on KZbin that reviews engines dying a horrible death it you constantly let the oil life dash feature go all the way down to 0% oil life. Your engine will not live a long happy life. Some videos show failure at around 100,000 miles to 140,000. If you are keeping your Equinox for a long time oil changes need to be done much sooner at around 40% to 50% oil life left according to the dashboard feature. Beware - as oil is cheap compared to killing the turbo or worse yet destroying the engine. When I change the oil at 50% oil life left the oil is already really black and that is caused by the high pressures in the engine because of the turbo cramming in more air at the intake. This is called blow by as the contaminants under high pressure are getting from the combustion chamber to the crankcase. This is a tradeoff of getting more power out of a 2.0-liter engine. Worse yet is the 1.5 liter engine in this size SUV. The 1.5 liter with the turbo I would definitely suggest oil changes much sooner - like around 55% to 60% of oil life showing in the dashboard feature.

You are 100% correct. I tell people the same thing to never rely on the oil change light I prefer the old school sticker in the window. They say oil more advanced nowadays which is probably true but if you want your car to go past 200k change the oil every 3k miles no matter what. I have done that on all my personal vehicles and quite a few of them are pushing 300k on the original motor.

Just got a ‘18 2.0t and I watched this just to see where the filter and drain were. Went to go drain the oil and the damn bolt is already a stripped. Thankfully the bolt head was tapped with a torx fitting which is bizarre. I’m used to older cars so maybe it’s a new production thing lol idk

A much easier oil change than the 2.4L motor. The cartridge oil filter in the 2.4L is in a very tight location.

DO NOT prefill your oil filter. Any contamination goes directly into the engine when you prefill the filter! Most manufacturers suggest against prefilling the filters for this reason. Instead, hold the gas pedal to the floor to enter flood mode to build oil pressure and to prime the filter.

I do not but that’s easy as well. It’s located off the air filter housing on the round air intake tube. There should be two small bolts or screws holding it in and then just unplug the connector and pull it out.
