Chicken Coop with A Solar Powered Door and Light

Join me for the build time-lapse and tour of our new off the grid, solar powered chicken house. The build video portion was inspired by Jimmy DIRESTA. The design was inspired by THIS OLD HOUSE youtube channel. The chicken house was built from 2 pieces of 4x8 exterior grade plywood, 4, 6 ft long treated 4x4 and some scrap 2x4's and rough sawn cedar. The roof is insulated and finished off with metal roofing. The chicken house is powered by the INCUBATOR WAREHOUSE AUTO-COOP solar panel, door and daylight. I very much like the design and the build vid. Only suggestion I'd make is to get a cheap piece of linoleum for the floor. I believe it would make the floor last a long time. The urine will eventually cause the plywood floor to deteriorate, but the linoleum would protect it. A 5 X 5 piece could be cut to wrap up all 4 walls 6" in a single piece. If it ever needed a deep cleaning, you could just pull it out and hose it down, then reinstall it. A clean henhouse is a healthy henhouse, and anything which makes that easier is a plus. Just my 2¢.

Very nice coop build Jim! If I may respectfully make a suggestion. The ventilation space along the roof line is a good idea; however, it would be behoove you to screen the space off with some 1/4 inch wire mesh. Mink and weasels would have no problem entering through that space and killing all your chickens. It's amazing how small a space a predator can get through for a free meal. I've raised chickens for 40+ years and at times have learned the hard way. Again, awesome build!

That brown paint is hideous but I love your build, the insulated roof with the metal roofing, super cute and functional and thank you for sharing the entire build! Most film a tour and not the build so I was thrilled to not ignore this video lol! Omg here’s a thought, would you be interested in building a doggy playground or jungle gym type construction? That’s currently my goal for this summer for my two Aussies to play and entertain themselves up high and relax down low under the shade provided by the construction, just a thought I think you’d get a ton of views

Pretty cool. I'd seen a more commercial video where the whole coop / pen was on wheels ... allowed the pens to be moved to fresh grass. Put some wheels on that puppy ... and once a day have it move like 6" ....

i had no idea that making things structurally sound, durable and visually appealing took so much work!!!! that battery box alone is a bomb proof tank!. you have awesome tools. my only critique is that the roost looks like its too close to the wall, and the gap between the roof and walls should be should have some hardware cloth or something

Got a homesteading channel I follow, they have a FB group page where other channels can be shared and shown on Sundays. Come Sunday Im gonna have to share this with them and see what they think. There are a lot of other homesteading channels on that page, some established, some still building up from one stage or another. Maybe some of them will come check this out and apply it. I found it interesting. Im thinking some of them may find the solar system advantageous for when they have to go other places and cant be there to take care of things.

Hi, the gaps you are using for ventilation, could a rat squeeze through? Also, in their run is there something setup to stop predators? I’m from Australia so we obviously have different predators. Excellent job by the way. Never thought of using solar, brilliant idea 👍😁. Cheers, Sean

Looks great! We had a predator infiltrate the barn and kill our flock of Brahma’s. That automatic door would have been a great way to protect them. Perhaps next time. What are the winter plans? I thought I remembered you mentioning that you too live on the northern plains.

I’m in Tennessee! Most folks around here just make sure water doesn’t freeze and that’s about it! This is our first experience with chickens so I’m learning as I go.

Names huh. My daughter spent a month on the farm with Grandma some years back, she named all (most) of the animals, on one Sunday they had chicken for dinner, when she went to find her favorite chicken... well, you know what happened 😱 She didn't eat chicken all the rest of that Summer.

Hey Jim, great job and video. I also built mine from This old House build on the chicken coop. I also did a few modifications to mine also. Took a few advice from the Carolina Coop guy also. One thing I think you should do is replace the "chicken wire" with Hardware Cloth as the chicken wire will not keep dogs or Predators out. They will just tear thru the flimsy wire. Also, you might want to put down a predator proof wire along the outside of the coop.
