"Cachái" actually comes from the english verb "to catch" like "you catch it?" in the sense of getting something when someone's talking; so the verb "to catch" in spanish would be like "cachar". In Chile they do an aspiration of the final -s or they just drop it. As you said in the video, in chilean dialect (not formally because its considerated wrong) the 2nd person singular its like the 2nd person plural in european spanish (vosotros) but since in Chile they drop the final -s its like "andái" instead of "andáis". Thats why they say "cachái" meaning "you got it?"

Verbal forms like _cachái_ and others are part of Chilean _voseo,_ which is only one of the _voseo_ varieties in the Spanish-speaking Americas. _Voseo_ is regularly used in Argentina, Uruguay, Bolivia, Colombia and Costa Rica, just to name some countries. _Voseo_ has its roots in the archaic reverential form of treatment _vos_ of classic Spanish brought to the Americas during the Conquest: _"Mi señor, vos sois tan sabio",_ now it is in disuse, except in ceremonial speech: _"Juráis o prometéis respetar la constitución y las leyes..."_ That reverential form of treatment was used together with a form of conjugation that in modern Spanish is used with the plural second person pronoun _vosotros_ which is only normal in Spain but it is replaced by _ustedes_ in the Americas: _"Vosotros sois estudiantes de español."_ (Spain); _"Ustedes son estudiantes de español"_ (Americas). The conjugation associated with the archaic _vos_ evolved differently in Chile than it did in Argentina, for instance: ● Archaic reverential treatment in classic Spanish: _Vos tenéis._ ● Argentinean _voseo:_ _Vos tenés._ (vowel i is dropped) ● Chilean _voseo:_ _Tú tenís._ (vowel e is dropped) Just like it happens in many other parts of the Americas, in relaxed speech the final s is dropped in Chile, or it is pronounced like a soft aspiration, which usually gives _"tení"._ In Chilean _voseo,_ the pronoun _vos_ is not normally used, but _tú_ is used instead. Chilean _voseo_ is only used in very colloquial and relaxed speech but it is rejected in the cultured and formal register whereas Argentinean _voseo_ is used in all registers. I hope it helps.

Travel Addict Guy TAG bueno, en Ecuador se dice también Luca a los miles. Y hay un montón de palabras que decimos igual o parecido, como cachai = cachas. Guata, chucha. Hasta los insultos son parecidos. Obvio hay otras cosas que no decimos, pero me sorprendió la similitud. Ahora, si se juntan dos amigos de barrio a hablar, hablan tan rápido y cortado que no entiendo. there is NO connection whatsoever. not at all. chileans speak an archaic spanish and simply drop the final "s" on the vosotros form. no connection to italian. the roots go back to chile's original colonization. italians never emigrated to chile in the numbers they did to argentina, uruguay, brazil or even peru. many arrived but not enough to influence the language beyond an odd loan word.

Hilarious when you asked if she was speaking differently so you could understand her. I moved to spain 4 years ago, after 12 years in Chile where i grew up and learned spanish as a kid. Ive met people from all over the spanish speaking world here in spain, most of them still use their everyday accent and get by with people understanding them, but chileans HAVE to adapt their accent, cadance, and vocabulary overseas. Its a skill we all learn and it becomes easy to accent switch after a few years. The last time I was in Mexico an astute listener told me I spoke Spanish like a Chilean teenager from 30 years ago. And she was right because that's where and when I learned to speak the language. In fact, I learned a lot of my Spanish from hours of reading the comic books of Condorito. My favorite Chilean word is siútico, which is a special pejorative referring to those pretentious, ridiculous victims of arribismo. Most of the turns of phrase that once made me cool in Chile were incomprehensible in Mexico. Now I'm trying to broaden my skills. All I really want is to be understood and for people to think I have a cute accent.

EL TROOPER nadie dice Podís porque en Chile NADIE pronuncia las “s” finales. Sin embargo la “s” aspirada aun se puede percibir en frases como “tu podís traermelo”. estái, cachái, hacís, tenís, etc. is what’s called VOSEO (verbal) CHILENO. it’s called verbal because in Chile the verb conjugation is quite common in the spoken language, but the use of the pronoun “vos” itself is more limited. It’s actually quite easy since it’s very similar to the conjugation of “vosotros”. Por eso me apresuro a aclarar, por si hiciera falta, que lo que aparece en este vídeo es el registro muy coloquial e inculto del español de Chile y que por supuesto se muestra aquí por diversión. Cualquier hablante chileno con un mínimo de educación sabrá con quién y en qué momento usar este registro. Cada vez que la ocasión o el interlocutor lo requiere, los chilenos hablamos tan bien y tan mal como cualquier otro hispanohablante. Sin embargo, he notado que en foros como este o en las redes sociales se ha hecho una especie de lugar común que esta forma coloquial de hablar es como todos los chilenos se expresan siempre, lo que evidentemente no es cierto, e incluso parece, por los comentarios de los propios chilenos aquí, que algunos hasta se sienten orgullosos de que los hablantes de otros lugares crean que así es el castellano normal de Chile. Bueno, sin ir más allá es como el latín formal y el vulgar: la gente sin duda hablaba ambos hasta que progresivamente el vulgar fue ganando terreno, con sus particularidades en cada zona geográfica. Incluso con un sesgo de clase, donde las aristocracias y las instituciones eclesiásticas mantenían el uso formal del latín y el resto de la gente no le daba tanta importancia. En lo personal no encuentro razón alguna para catalogar el dialecto chileno como 'incorrecto' ni mucho menos 'inculto', y de hecho lo estimo con poseedor de una riqueza lingüística tremenda. Si no fuera por la injustificada carga peyorativa que le dan algunos grupos sociales, hablaría el dialecto chileno en cualquier espacio social. Por otro lado, si un extranjero le da mala fama o no le gusta cómo hablo, cosa de él: que no me escuche entonces; yo por mi parte no voy a tener problemas con conversar con él y obviamente siempre buscando un terreno lingüístico común para que me pueda entender (como ha hecho toda la humanidad en literalmente toda su historia).

Sí, tanto el español argentino y el español chileno, son variaciones contraídas derivadas del español antiguo. Es contraído, porque se omiten algunas letras de la palabra. Que interesante lo que señalas, de las contracciones del castellano antiguo, que interactuo directamente con el mapudungun: "teneis" se contrajo y quedó en "teni"; en mapudungun una contraccion común es del mismo tipo, por ejemplo "müley" (el o ella está, hay), usualmente se contrae y es dicha como "müli", o "feley" (esta bien, ok) es dicha como "feli". Es exactamente el mismo sonido que muta de la misma forma en el mapudungun y en el castellano de Chile... interesante.

Amazing video! This is gonna be super useful for when I go there on my year abroad in Chile next year! From what I heard, it sounds like a lot of the words are similar to those in Italian, for example, 'carabineros' might come from the Italian 'cabinieri' which is a word for a specific type of police. epic djyoshi Well, Chile took that police influence but the chilean language is not really influenced by the italian. the italian influence on the chilean police (Carabineros) are an exception (and that was good, because they are one or may be the best latin american police). another things are not italian, for example, the army has a strong prussian influence in the marchs, uniforms and doctrine. you can search on youtube the chilean army and it really look like prussian.

In the past, I didn't understand the Chilean dialect so much. Today I have another vision, the Chilean dialect is very particular, regional, silly, bashful and practical and it honors its Amerindian origin, I find it very beautiful and sweet. It has words from the Chilean cachai, hueon, which reminds me of the aymara, the rapa nui, the hawaiian, the term yaya, and very asian and indigenous. Cachai, viene del inglés "to catch". Las terminaciones "ai" de las palabras como dices tú, vienen de España, pero en Chile tendemos a "comernos" las letras S al hablar, especialmente cuando van al final de la palabra entonces, antiguamente la frase sería "Cómo estais?" y con el tiempo quedó en "cómo estai" y así con la mayoría de los verbos que terminan en "as" ej: vas = vai, andas = andai, cantas=cantai, estudias=estudiai etc. La expresión "al tiro" proviene, según una de las teorías, del campo chileno, los trabajadores eran llamados a almorzar por medio de un tiro de escopeta, de tal forma que las personas decían "vamos a almorzar al tiro (de la escopeta)" osea, inmediatamente al escuchar el disparo. Respecto a las policías, sí se le llama policía cuando se menciona a la institución en general, por ejemplo: "La policía se hizo presente en el lugar de los hechos..." aunque además de los Carabineros (aka Pacos) existe otra la PDI que es la Policía De Investigaciones, que como su nombre lo dice, se encarga más a la investigación de crímenes y no al orden público como Carabineros.

I've been fluent in Spanish as a second language for 15 years or so, this is the most interesting part about Spanish to me 🙂 It's also the reason I don't have a specific quality accent 😭
