China launched a three-day special joint patrol and inspection operation in the central and northern parts of the Taiwan Strait that includes moves to board ships. The move comes amid heightened tensions between China and Taiwan.
Taiwan's President has met with the US House Speaker in a historic meeting in California. Tsai Ing-Wen and Kevin McCarthy's talks were the first in the United States in decades. The brief visit came despite warnings from China, which doesn't recognise Taiwan's independence - and views the island as part of its own territory. It deems any contact between the US and Taiwan as a challenge to its authority.

@@ovaughan3836 The U.S. position on Taiwan’s international status is “undetermined,” in accordance with the outcome of the 1951-52 San Francisco Peace Treaty. In that treaty, Japan had formally ceded sovereignty over the island, but it was not decided to whom. Most countries at the 1951 Peace Conference argued that Taiwan’s status needed to be determined in due time, in accordance with the principle of self-determination enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations. Post-WW2, Taiwan and the Pescadores islands are not handed to China, and KMT is a foreign government in exile under the American occupation of Japanese Taiwan islands. In Taiwan, the KMT government was politically defeated by partly aboriginal Taiwanese Tsai Ing-wen Democratic Progressive Party. On the eve of the 1894 Sino-Japanese War, about 45 percent of the island was administered under the Manchus Qing administration (Imperial China) while the remaining was populated by Taiwanese aborigines. Imperialist Manchus Qing's Imperial China didn't fully control Taiwan.

The neocons would love to provoke a proxy war over Taiwan. The Taiwanese people feel otherwise. That's why in nov 2022 local elections, Pres Tsai's party lost 19 of 22 municipal elections. If the US wants to start a proxy war, it has to do so before the 2024 national elections. My first reaction - apart from any personal opinions I have - is to see if our company can source components from other countries. We source many things from China for good commercial reasons. However - apart from my personal opinions - this posturing is adding *supply risk* to the commercial factors. We are a teeny, tiny company but I have ZERO doubt that Apple has a full-fledged investigation going on. A breakdown of commercial relations with China would leave them seriously Effed.

Two things... We only source from China because thats where a lot of stuff is manufactured. In the last 50-80 years a huge percentage of manufacturing shifted to China because it was cheap labour. That doesnt mean that manufacturing cant be moved out of china and things will be business as usual. A lot of things like rare earth metals, ores and minerals used to make a lot of electrical and digital goods arent actually *FROM* China - They are found in other parts of the world and exported to the factories in china that refines it or uses it for manufacturing goods. Intel and Apple have already moved or have started to move manufacturing out of China to Taiwan, India and other nearby countries. Cost per unit on things might go up due to labour costs. But otherwise it will be business as usual. Rare earth metals and minerals will get sent to factories elsewhere instead of China. There will inevitably be a slow down while each company sort all their logistics out but once everything is going. It should ramp up in no time.

China's strategy is interesting right now. It's clear that they are forcing the world to finally make a choice on either recognizing Taiwan as an independent country or as part of the CCP, a choice that most of the world has carefully tried to avoid making. And initially it seems they think that most of the world will choose the CCP, perhaps because the world has been indecisive about Taiwan for far longer than Ukraine. But ultimately I think this bargain will fail - a lot of the major economic powers of the world sided with Ukraine and I suspect it will be more or less the same with China. The question is then, is China doing this knowing that they will lose their major economic partners or not? Perhaps they think that they can ride out any economic fallout from losing western trade (even though it currently seems unlikely their economy will do well in the future even in their current situation). Either way it doesn't change the fact that the west needs to pivot away from its trade reliance with China - something that was already clear from an economic standpoint for years. If war with Taiwan precipitates, a country most view as an independent and democratic society, a lot of countries may feel like their hands are tied in regards to who they side with. Perhaps the political calculus with China goes deeper. Perhaps they know they won't get countries (bar Russia) to side with them so the goal is instead to just get countries to sit out and not want to involve themselves in the war. That could be enough to tip the scales in China's favor should they go for annexing the South China Sea or Taiwan altogether, although it would still come with a high price. But we have seen for nearly a century that the CCP doesn't mind the cost of human lives. Ultimately, their end goals seem vain at best. Even if they DID take over Taiwan, then what? They will have lost millions of people, and spent more money than they could afford to. And it's not like taking that tiny island would somehow boon their economy out of that situation. Their economy would be in even worse shambles. Ya they would have the South China Sea, but the strategic value in having that is control over trade - trade they would no longer have due to their warring. People might say that they would take over TSMC and therefore most of the worlds supply of advance microchips, but I doubt Taiwan would let that happen even if they lost. And again, I've looped myself back into the opinion I've had for years that China is in no place to invade Taiwan AT LEAST for a few more years (if not decades), and this is just more of the saber rattling we have seen for decades from China. But I guess no one expected Russia to invade either, and even though this scenario is even less likely, China has proven itself to be even more rash than Russia. Perhaps they simply want to watch the world burn as vengeance for the Century of Shame, even if it means they will burn as well. I really can't say. Pardon my rant, I didn't intend for it to get this long lol

China recovered Taiwan from Japan in 1945. In July 1895, the Qing government was forced to cede Taiwan and the Penghu Islands to Japan through the Treaty of Shimonoseki due to its defeat in the Sino-Japanese War. In 1941, in its Declaration of War against Japan, the Chinese government announced to the rest of the world that it had annulled all unequal treaties signed with Japan and that it would recover Formosa and the Penghu Islands. In December 1943, the governments of China, the United States and the United Kingdom issued the Cairo Declaration, which explicitly declared that Japan should return to China the territories it had stolen from China, including Manchuria, Formosa and the Pescadores Islands. In 1945, the Potsdam Proclamation, signed by China, the United States and Britain and later joined by the Soviet Union, reaffirmed that "the terms of the Cairo Declaration will be implemented". In September of the same year, Japan signed the Terms of Japan's Surrender, promising to "faithfully fulfill its obligations under the Potsdam Proclamation". On October 25, the Chinese government announced the "resumption of the exercise of sovereignty over Taiwan" and held a "surrender ceremony of Taiwan Province under the Chinese Theater Command" in Taipei. China recovered Taiwan de jure and de facto. Resolution 2758 of the UN General Assembly once and for all settled the question of who should represent the whole of China at the UN. The 26th session of the United Nations General Assembly in October 1971 adopted resolution 2758 by an overwhelming majority, deciding: "Restore all the rights of the People's Republic of China, recognize the representatives of her Government as the sole legitimate representatives of China in the United Nations Organization, and immediately expel the representatives of Chiang Kai-shek from the seats they have illegally occupied in the Organization and all its subordinate organs." The resolution affirms that the Government of the People's Republic of China is the sole legal government representing the whole of China, including Taiwan, in the international community. It also makes clear that China has only one seat in the United Nations and there is no such issue as "two China" or "one China, one Taiwan". The legal affairs Department of the UN Secretariat has made it clear in its legal opinions on all Taiwan-related issues that "Taiwan, as a province of China, has no independent status". Therefore, it is safe to say that the resolution has completely solved politically and legally the question of who will represent China in the international arena. The representation of the government of the People's Republic of China in the United Nations and the political status of Taiwan are two aspects of Resolution 2758 of the General Assembly. Resolution 2758 provides a legal basis for the UN system and agencies to properly handle Taiwan-related issues. It embodies the authority of international law and has become a basic norm of international law that should be observed by all UN member States. Taiwan has no basis, reason or right to participate in the United Nations and other international organizations that only sovereign States can participate in. In practice, the UN system and agencies use the title "Taiwan, Province of China" for Taiwan.

On October 22, 1962, JFK announced a naval "quarantine" of Cuba. Any vessel heading to Cuba would be stopped and searched by the US in order to prevent any new Soviet nuclear missiles from reaching Cuba. A Soviet fleet carrying nuclear weapons sailed head to head, on a collision force for the US fleet. Nuclear tipped torpedoes were armed, as the Soviets sailed right up to the American ships- only to turn back at the last moment. Had the US fired on one of the ships, the Soviets were instructed to fire back with nuclear torpedoes. While this is clearly different, the US has promised to defend China. What if a Taiwanese ship is attacked? The US would have to move to defend Taiwan. US forces deployed to Taiwan, China pushes to the brink. I am so lucky to have never been afraid of war. I am now.

It's a game of chicken, China's smarter than that, until they're not. In the end, it all comes down to how willing is all of asia or the world to drop their economic ties to dump China's leaders into poverty to help Taiwan? (Edit: forgot to add this, How willing is Mainland China to try whatever it can to take Taiwan for it's dream of empire?) Xi is a realist, not an idealist, he truly believes in the game of power, but he also has dreams of empire, as the Chinese Dynasty was when it was the center of commerce for many centuries. And that's what scares me about Mainland China, their lack of morals & willingness to bend & stretch it as they see fit through soft power.

Claiming that Taiwan is part of China because Taiwan or parts of Taiwan were a colony of China for only 5% if China's history and not since 1895 is one very weak claim. Taiwan is not Chinese territory. China's history extends from about 2,070 BC to the present. China's Ming Dynasty claimed Taiwan in 1683 although China did not even control all of Taiwan until two centuries later. China ceded Taiwan to Japan in 1895. At most, China only claimed Taiwan for 212 years throughout China's app. 4,093 year history.. It is nonsense like England claiming that the United States is part of Britain because the US was a British colony for 169 years.

@@m.e.345 Apple is moving a lot of it's manufacturing out of China. India is one place for sure, as it is a growing market. So I think that in the not to distant future that iphone for USA market will come from India. China is really pissing in their own corn flakes with their attitude for a long time now. They just don't realize how united the world can become in a vary short time when people don't like what they see. China wants to play with the big boy club but doesn't have any respect for world courts and rulings that they don't like. That will come back to bite them in their own @$$.

It is time to start spreading 'the word': During the active, Chinese Civil War, Taiwan was an independent island. The democrats moved to that unclaimed island. China never owned or governed Taiwan.

China (mainland+islands) have 2 governments: PRC and ROC. 12 countries recognize ROC as legitimate government of china while the rest of the countries (around 180) recognize PRC as legitimate government of china.

If China does not want to abide by international standards and boards an American ship or fishing boat, the United States and Canada should impose the same standards on the North American Sea that China seeks to arbitrarily impose on the South China Sea. The North American Sea is that part of the Pacific Ocean bordered by the Aleutian Islands, Hawaii and the US-Mexican Pacific Ocean border.

China should just start investing into government and freedoms in Cuba, or better yet, into supporting of freedoms and independence in Miami or Texas, just to show the US how it looks like meddling in countries 8000 miles away. Glad that China stepped in to protect what is theirs.

It worked with the free democratic Asian tigers, at least the 4 remaining ones, but the CCP is special. Try criticizing dear leader Xi publicly, or even dear genocidal leader Mao? Try talking about Tiananmen Square on Chinese social media. Try asking what happened to Li Jiaqi? The "Great Firewall" even censors its own name. The CCP continue to oppress their people and now try to spread that oppression to their neighbors. Hong Kong is already gone. "One Country Two Systems" nope. No one will trust the CCP's words again after HK. Taiwanese were watching closely. Now the Philippines and Taiwan are being harassed. Things didn't work in China as liberal democracies dreamed they would with free trade. Maybe time to change official recognitions again, like Two-China policy. Or rather, China-Taiwan policy.
