OPEN THE KZbin ENGLISH SUBTITLES. As a language teacher, most of the time (not all of the time) I listen to people on KZbin give language learning advice I want to pull my hair out. Learn multiple languages at once! Get fluent in 30 days! Learn 10 languages... do this and you will become the Jack of all trades and master of none. I felt the need to make this video and start leading serious language learners in the right direction. I also want people to understand that the current videos online including mine are usually just simple conversations. They don't show any depth of knowledge that would be necessary for someone to use these languages in their career... not to mention they don't show writing and reading ability, which is the hardest part about Chinese and Japanese.
Below are language learning tools I have personally used for years. Direct purchases of software from these links goes to supporting this channel.

There is this one video where he goes into a Walmart and speaks 17 different languages in just 1 visit and has a basic conversation with everyone and the smiles and laughs he brings to everyone is amazing! but it is also obvious he is spreading himself to thin. OPEN THE KZbin ENGLISH SUBTITLES. I heard a lot of language advice on KZbin that I disagree with. With language learning less is more. The more you focus on one language, the deeper you can understand it. There is a lot of hype about “SPEAKING”, but language learning isn’t all speaking. Remember, the real difficulty to Chinese and Japanese is reading and writing and it is totally overlooked on KZbin. Writing essays by hand in Chinese and Japanese was the hardest thing I ever had to do. -Anming

Oriental Pearl I think people are enthralled by any activity that seems like it requires superhuman ability. Not only polyglots but street musicians, skateboarders, parkour, breakdancers, et al. We know intellectually that those performers got so good through many hours of study. But, they make it look so easy that it appears that they were born with those abilities. That is most everyone’s superhero fantasy. Power bestowed without personal effort.

I admit that I still struggle with kanji, but when college ends, I will start studying it a lot harder. I find it easier to recognise kanji when I read them, but actually trying to write them down is hard. I think kanji recognition is definitely good.

I've been self learning Japanese now for 1 year and 2 months now. While its kinda sad that she said that you will need to seek some sort of formal education, she has a point. I plan on taking a Japanese college course later on in life as well as going for the JLPT N3 exam at the end of this year. Honestly, there are times where i don't have the intrinsic motivation to do it. Having the extrinsic motivation of a teacher or deadlines to help push you are really nice even though they may seem like hell. Piece of advice to anyone learning Japanese, kanji is unavoidable, no matter what anyone else says. Without kanji, Japanese is just a blob of sounds on paper. Please drill the basics in your head because they will really save you when you have a difficult time. When it comes to conversation, you don’t have the luxury of typing it out, rereading it, making corrections and remembering a grammar rule. Everything has to come out whether its right or wrong. And don't worry if its wrong, you WILL make mistakes, they are a しないといけません. Just set little goals for your self and don't think of this huge language because it will intimidate you as it did me. Don't cram hiragana in the beginning if this is your first foreign language you are learning, do a 5-15 a week and just read stuff in romaji before that. Your vocabulary base in the beginning doesn't really need kanji because they are very distinct words. And keep at it even though it will seem like such a pain. You will ask yourself "why tf am i learning this?"(I assume you are self studying at this point.) and continuing will seem like an endless battle so here is my best piece of advice. Make yourself a system, it doesn't have to be a strict "study 6 hours everyday" system but make sure you do something everyday. By something, I mean something productive like watching an anime with Japanese subtitles or making a vocabulary deck on anki and doing it, you will build something that seems like a normal everyday thing and then just expand from there. As a lazy bum that never studies in school for tests and just did my best in class, this was a nightmare at first. Just remember, you are you, even though there are soooo many people out there that are better than you, you have your own life and they have theirs. You can do it. この句を読んでくれて感謝しています。全部の常用漢字を読めるようになるために僕はがんばらければなりません。諦めないで!

This is solid advice. I learned Chinese and Japanese for my career, but many people watching this are doing it as a hobby. I think your advice is very good!
@OrientalPearl
@OrientalPearl 4 жыл бұрын
With the difficulty in formal language as well all Chinese/Japanese characters, it is necessary to have formal training to become proficient on a professional level. Business level Chinese and Japanese, especially for academic essays and business emails, is unreachable with self study as a native English speaker. The advice here is not for people learning these two languages for fun, but rather for their career. I only know HSK and JLPT, which are required for university entry in China and Japan. Even top scores on those tests are not enough to be fully prepared for the Chinese and Japanese academic/business world. I learned a lot more still after passing those tests many years ago.

Man, at the beginning of my language journey those YT polyglots with their 10 languages really intimidated me, until I realised that they speak their languages only at an A1-A2 level. Crazy how knowing four languages to a high degree still made me feel like I was lagging behind. -.- Most language learners online only seem to flex their speaking abilities (that usually just revolve around very basic daily topics), they probably cannot even read news articles in Chinese, let alone books. While girls like us soon have master’s degrees from programmes taught entirely in Mandarin. 😎 keep that quality content coming! 🤗

I think Laoshu50500 does actually know a lot of those languages fluently or is at least at an intermediate level. However, I do agree with you that many of them probably just speak some of them intermediately. I don't think that makes them not multilingual or polyglots, but it doesn't make them fluent. My Japanese is high intermediate but I believe I can pass off as bilingual.

Everyone's panicking and buying toilet roles while Anming is flexing on the trolls by speaking fluent Chinese and Japanese in a video to pass the time :D. In all seriousness though, even though I speak absolutely no Mandarin, I have been learning Japanese for 6 years and I'm at a high intermediate level. I think that your Japanese is actually really good! I hope you do more videos like this or videos where you speak to Japanese people in Japanese. The ONLY thing I noticed that could be improved on was your American accent still showed a little bit when you were speaking, but that was just minor because it was small and Japanese speakers, including myself, can understand you. I'm sure that you'll be able to get used to pronouncing Japanese 100% accurately like a Japanese speakers eventually. I'll admit I've only recently started getting better at my Japanese accent and speaking Japanese at a normal pace because I've been practising it more with friends and speaking to myself in Japanese. You're doing great, so again please ignore trolls who are clearly just bitter and jealous. I've come across some pretty dumb trolls like that myself. Also you're one of the first small channels I'm subscribed to and genuinely excited to see grow.

What brought me originally to your channel was me trying to refresh my German and being recommended a multitude of polygot/language channels and after a few X videos, yours was recommended. I enjoy the genuine conversations you have with people, your clearly educated, culturally conscious content, and the fact that you dont really waste people's time like some other channels do. You also encourage me to always keep learning bc although i'm a native Spanish speaker, my writing (nor my speaking, really..) is not to college level and you keep me motivated that's it's ok to continue learning German and also educate myself more in the languages I "already speak." Also Japanese = goals, so there's that too lol

Thanks so much for your wonderful message! I want to be realistic with people that are learning another language especially a language that is really different from their native tongue. I like you because you are respectful towards every culture equally. There is no bias. Your Chinese is so authentic, I love to watch you speak them. Chinese and Japanese is not an easy language to learn. Pronunciations are hard. But, you speak so well. It's a skill to be proud of. In addition to that, language is also culture! When you show an interest in their language, you are showing interest towards their culture. Many countries have to learn English, but not the other way around. So being able to communicate with the natives in their language is a blessing. It makes natives happy because people are also putting effort to speak in their language and culture! Its a very considerate and most kindest factor. Like there is an appreciation on a communication level. To be honest, I think you are also so fun and kind. The kind of friend I want.

Ahhh great ! Wow now that I know a little more about what you are about I must say “ well done young woman” I have much respect for what you are about and here you are not sugar coating how hard proficiently in a language is ! Tell it like it is ! Personally I have taken up teaching myself “ conversational Mandarin “ I’m 68 so given my old brain I will be happy to be able to do that 😎 and thank you for not belittling those who want to learn as a hobby 💐. For sure the act of using the language is so important as I am Irish and was taught Galige at school but I’ve been in Australia for 45 years and had no opportunity to use it so I’ve now forgotten most of it 😳. Thank you so much for continuing to do these videos and if I can make one suggestion, that is lower the music in the background because it was hard to hear the “ tone” use 😎. Stay safe ,stay well 🖖

That's amazing that you are taking on Chinese. I taught people in their 80s English here in Japan. Everyone has their own reasons for learning something. I like the violin as a hobby. I'm not looking to become a professional violinist. I just get a lot of joy out of doing it. But people need to know how I got where I am with Chinese and Japanese. I'm not going to sugar coat it and push some "fluent in 30 days or your money back" kind of stuff. Sorry the music was a little distracting. lol

I know many Koreans that also speak Japanese very well and they can learn the language very fast as Japanese Grammar and Korean grammar are extremely similar and direct translations (word for word) are possible most of the time. There is also a massively shared vocabulary between Japanese, Korean and Chinese and like you would be able to get to a high level in less than two years imo.

Advice section: I had already learned Polish, but at a rudimentary level. Because of the "you know" virus I now have more time and started learning Polish again to reach an university level. Besides grammer that includes things like ortography, phonology, culture and history. Now 35 years ago I learned Turkish. Ten years later I married a Turkish girl from Turkey. This helped A LOT. According to Turkish people I speak better Turkish than themselves. I learned these two languages through self-study. Making it a part of your life: Polish) I helped Polish people,who came to The Netherlands as workers, with interpreting for them at doctors, agencies etc. I also helped them to fill in forms by translating those forms for them. Between 2013 and 2015 I worked at a factory where I was the only Dutchman working together with 9, 10 Polish people. Hence, I was speaking Polish for 6 hours every day. Turkish) As written above. Right after I started learning Turkish I became part of the Turkish community through Turkish friends.

The first of your videos that I listened to, was about people being surprised when you started talking one language they didn't expect you to know, and then another. There are several polyglots posting such videos on KZbin. It is so funny to watch the reactions - the "wow" moments. Actually it's more than just funny. There's must be some mechanism, that I bet psychologists know all about, that makes us able to enjoy surprises again and again through our fellow human beings. It evokes much the same emotions as if we ourselves go through the experience for the first time - even if we never actually did! In this technological world of ours, we can record these special wow-moments, distribute them to all of us, and repeat them over and over. So that's how I started watching your channel. I'll tell you later why I kept watching. (It's in the REPLY here.)

I've always wondered how it is to actually live in other parts of the world. You don't really get to understand that from watching regular TV programs. When I watched your videos, you really let me into your daily life, far more than similar videos I've watched. So I went on to watch all kinds of videos you make, after the initial videos I watched where you surprise people with your language skills. You not only have the perspective of a foreigner coming to another country, but also that of someone putting an enormous effort into being extremely well integrated into not just one, but two cultures very different from your own. Through your background you know how to communicate the experience to the world, while at the same time you remove the language and culture barrier for us in a uniqe way. I feel I'm right there with you. You impress even the natives with your language skills, who in some cases tell us you speak their language even better than themselves. You engage very well with the viewers and with the people you meet, not least because of your positive attitude. Your skill handling the camera during recording is phenomenal, and the technical quality and editing is also superb.

But that changed thanks to you and other genuine language KZbinrs out there. Now I'm interested in learning Chinese. Coz quite frankly, they're everywhere! I might even meet good friends! I recently came across a video by a language Professor who talks about language acquisition. He states that the best way to learn a language is to read children story books i.e. 80% of your learning should consist of that and 20% translating or talking about general pictures in magazines. I think I'll be giving his approach some more time as well as covering a basic Arabic language book. I have posted the link below in case you were interested. Shockingly he knows more Arabic than me even though I have been trying to learn the language on and off for a year. (He learnt a dialect but still amazing). I gave a speech in Chinese about a year and a half ago. I had it all typed up, and then wrote it in pinyin. It took me 12 minutes reading the characters, reading the pinyin transcription I did reduced that to 8 min. The event organiser saw my notes and said "oh you can just give the speech in English," actually no, because I'd installed my Chinese brain and wouldn't be able to fully switch back even though English is my native language. She thought I couldn't understand what was written there. I worked in a school where the other teachers mostly couldn't speak English, that speech was about 1 year in. They were really relaxed and friendly. There's no way on earth I'd be able to give a speech if I'd continued teaching in a mostly English environment. My progress is much slower than yours, having only reached HSK 5 in 5 years but socialising with mainly Chinese people, and living in a super local area of Beijing really increased my confidence in speaking. I also read with more confidence. I wouldn't suggest totally avoiding the foreign community but have seen people who've lived in China for years and still can't communicate with locals, which is a shame as it's limiting. Now I'm stuck in England but hopefully should be back in China next month. I miss my friends and proper Chinese food, I had a fusion breakfast of 油条and porridge (oatmeal) this morning!

I could pick out some of the Chinese words you were saying from the little bit of Korean I know, and the logic behind the grammar is VERY similar to Japanese, so you'll definitely have a head start. Thanks for the video~!

I would love to start learning it. I wish my boyfriend would try it too, but he wants to learn Spanish.

I find you like a gem in the rough here on KZbin! So many make fake persona's for the camera, and you're just yourself.

KZbin came up with your video....and I think you are a nice authentic person. I speak a few languages...and want to learn Italian alot better than I know now. Japanese and Chinese sounds very cool but I think it is hard to learn. I think Dutch sounds like that for others...I am Dutch :)...well...I will keep watching your videos, I like seeing other languages, countries and experiences :)...keep up the good work! Cheers Maureen

Wow! Finally I found someone is like me too. I’m chinese and living in US and chose Japanese as my second foreign language and took JLPT n1. 中国語すごすぎた!発音はアークセントがぜんぜんないです。很有幸被推送到这样的youtuber!btw I went to MSU and studied aboard in japan through JCMU in 2012. Great to see your videos. 加油!
