In this kung fu wall bag training drill the sow-chui is modified to land like a reverse punch. The idea behind this modification is to take the hook to build momentum and then drive it in with a more straight line strike which will help your connection and striking body alignment. This is not meant to replace all sow-chui punches, but is an excellent variation of the strike.
***Please note that this is not how the punch is supposed to be performed in the Choy Li Fut Wall Bag Set. This style is simply for an alternate training.

I have so much respect for #choyleefut now. I’ve seen how you guys pretty much have ALL the techniques we have in WING CHUN. So some very high level stuff I’ve learned, you guys definitely have seen it, trained it. It’s impressive.

So is this just for conditioning, or does it aid in power development too?

Great question, it definitely will condition the fist and knuckles and yes, it will also aid in power development, but in a very specific range. It will increase the power of the punch when it connects, so only the last few inches of the strike. It's that little bit of extra press and connection to the bag that is so important in wallbag training, that's why I have a 2 minute chat at the beginning of every video because most people just bounce off the bag and go as fast as they can. Stay connected and press with the entire body, without leaning, that's how I emphasize wall bag training. It's not the only way, but I prefer this way.

Yes, it is in a way, but I would suggest approaching them as different. The biggest difference is in the amount of give, the heavybag will move and swing with the punch (or kick), the wallbag only gives a little because it has nowhere to swing. There's also a difference depending on what you fill the bag with, most wallbags are filled with a pellet of some sort making for a firmer striking surface, it's like when the sand bags inside the heavy bag break and settle to the bottom, not the most fun place to go at full force. That's why I would rather throw full speed and power punches on a heavy bag, but only 60% on a wallbag. I don't think one is better than the other, they are both excellent pieces of training equipment that can't replace eachother.
