For real. I spiraled hard and fast into depression but after a few months made a few friends then a few more and things drastically improved. Companionship is extremely important. He needed intervention and a lot of support very early in life, never got it, never understood he needed it, and consequently suffered and left a trail of suffering that was pretty damn avoidable. im sad for him and the people he hurt.
@davidng8870 Жыл бұрын
i dont know his story super well but the harm really seems limited to his mum, assuming that is true. being racist or homophobic or whatever is shitty but if we are talking that sort of harm then half the world is guilty. the guy is more sinned against than sinning imo, the lengths some people have gone to to fuck with him are ridiculous. as for the mum thing, i dont dee the utility in charging and jailing him. doubt his mother wanted or would have wanted that either (not sure if she is lucid). separate them if she is at risk and get him some much needed treatment.

Im a woman with aspergers and I agree. Chris may claim to be high functioning, but that label is ambiguous. Im high functioning, and I wasn't even diagnosed until 18 months ago, at age 38. I went basically my whole life not knowing I was autistic, and never receiving any help for it. All those years, no-one knew there was anything wrong with me, I've been married, I can hold down jobs, I have had my own house, I have friends; most people who met me wouldn't know there was anything different about me. But with Chris, you can tell there is something 'off' there, even from a young age. Perhaps he *is* high functioning by the diagnostic definition of it, which I believe simply states you must have an IQ greater than 70. But there is a massive difference between him, and someone like me, yet we share a disorder. I do wonder if Chris might have turned out different had he had more understanding and assistance as a younger person. He seemed like he was a sweet kid that, with proper help, could have learned to not only socialise and get by in the world better, but been happier, too. His case is quite sad really. I feel he would have always been an oddball, but I honestly think he could have been a *harmless* oddball that could have even had friends and relationships, and contributed to society positively had he gotten the right intervention and understanding. Instead......well, we know what happened.

@@Oreztar Well if you ask me I think the autism part had very little to do with it and it was more the fact he was sheltered and allowed to act like a baby his whole life. And let me tell you, I've found tons of people like this in my real life who are not autistic. Denying your child from growing up properly is in my opinion, one of the most sinister forms of abuse and we can see it fully manifest here with Christian.
@Oreztar3 жыл бұрын
@@zixx844 Its hard to say what is autism and what is upbringing, because autism can manifest so wildly differently from person to person. But there are qualities that are more common in autistic people than the general population, and being trusting/naïve is one of them. As is 'immature' interests. As is a lack of self awareness. As is obsessive interests and hyperfocus on one topic. We see all these things in chris, and it would be disingenuous to imply autism has nothing to do with his behaviour at all, or that its only upbringing. Its likely a bit of both. Having said that, there are also many behaviours he shows that are not typical of autism, which could be related to upbringing, or he could have some other disorder going on alongside autism. None of us will probably ever know.

In his mind, anything to do with psychiatry and psychology meant going away to horrible asylums in straight jackets and getting lobotomies. He really was afraid that they were going to take Chris away. Yes, that was mostly an irrational fear to have by the 90s, abusive places like the Willowbrook State School were still open until 1987. Chris was about 5 years old when that horrifying story made national news. Bob's fear does help explain somewhat why Chris didn't get a lot of the care needed. On the subject of hoarding, the book "Warhol/Chris Chan" briefly discusses the difference between hoarding and collecting, and it's important to keep it in mind when looking at Chris: "Unlike a collector, a hoarder is not organized." Bob was a collector. He organized his stamp and vinyl collections and wanted to share them with Chris. Barb is a hoarder. There's nothing organized about the filth in the house. Chris is organized when it comes to collecting shit in games.
@lynnehuff96592 жыл бұрын
I've never thought of Chris as a hoarder. Barb was, and Bob may have just thew up his hands. Some people don't understand that Chris couldn't have just "cleaned up" that house.
Lynne, you know all those toys and figurines belong to Chris right? And his mother is no longer in charge and their house is More cluttered than ever with Chris taking over every room in the house as storage for his things. Sequestering his mom to a single room and bed. Please go look at some of the recent videos and pictures.

This is always sad to look back on, back when he wasn’t entirely malicious, back when he could have actually made something of himself. He says that his highschool days where his most prosperous, but I think it was his college days instead. If he had taken the time he used to try and find a woman, to instead study and figure out what he wanted to do with his life, then I’m sure that things would be marginally better for him. But then again, the story of Chris Chan is a story about hindsight and a little bit of foreshadowing.

I really wonder what he might have become if he had grown in more present times where autism is more understood and somewhat less ridiculed, If he hadn’t been the subject of abuse, and was given the best chance to prosper as he could. I’m not sure if the true love desire would’ve ever worked for him anyway, but maybe he wouldn’t have been so fixated on that if the rest of his life had other positive inputs for him

I’m going full CSI skills here. Hypothesis 1: Chris simply walking by the villagers houses around sun down in the in game time, the villagers have a preprogrammed routine where they enter and leave their houses on the GameCube version of animal crossing. Looking at the grainy video this is a possibility but it’s hard to tell due to the coloration which can be used to gauge time of day. Alternatively an in game event trigger might be causing them to go home at around the same time. Hypothesis 2: The villagers in animal crossing aren’t programmed to dislike or avoid you regardless of how you treat them, in fact hitting them with the net in later games only cause dialogue and mood differences, but still counts as engagement. The only way to actually make a villager dislike you or leave the village is to ignore them. Hypothesis 3: Chris’ sheer aura transcends all programming and logic and repels the villagers away. I know Chris is a terrible person, but I honestly feel bad about the way his parents obviously put him on a pedestal as the "miracle child." His comments on how he was talented and DESERVED recognition for how great and special he was is a clear indicator that he was overly pampered and mother-henned to death for being autistic, and it made him incredibly self-centered and self-agrandizing because he was always treated as "different." This was obviously worsened by the abuse he suffered at the hands of school staff (talked about in the previous episode), wherein he developed these ideals of other people (especially men) being inferior and just competition for him to stamp out because they othered him and didn't treat him the way he was raised to think he SHOULD be (AKA special and talented and "not like other disabled/neurodivergent people" if the way he talks about other disabled people is anything to go off of). It's possible that he was always going to end up a monster, but it's hard not to imagine if he could've been a kinder, more well-adjusted person if he had just been raised and treated like everybody else, and not othered because of his autism.

It's also pretty obvious from his autism tutorial, from the part where he gives instructions on how to befriend him: Step 1; be a slim, sexy, beautiful woman Step 2; be single Step 3; approach him with an offer of china Step 4; men and uglies need not apply All of his preferences for a "friend" are the same as his prefences for a girlfriend; female and single (and white). I've never seen Chris have any other demands or preferences for their prospective girlfriend besides being single, white, younger than him, and willing to fuck him. It would be sad how he's so unable to see women as equals if it wasn't so incredibly infuriating. For someone who keeps insisting they respect women, he sure has a sexist view of them. It's somehow even more infuriating how someone who looks like Chris does can just outright say that ugly people shouldn't even talk to him. The double standards are real.
