I contemplated killing myself in 8th grade by this guy who I still don’t know why he hated me. Whether it be my short height, annoying voice, ethnicity, or anything, and I told my teacher and all he did was tell me not to worry about it and the bully even told me “The teacher ain’t gonna do shit” and I always prayed that he not be at school when the weekday arrives.

I ran into a man who bullied me when I was 7 or 8 or so, 20-25 years ago. He was a soccer coach, I only had him for a few sessions, he picked on me and belittled me to the laughter of the whole group. I don't think he necessarily meant to pick on me but I never forgot. Ironically, I went further in the sport than anyone in that group that day. Then I went on to train/ compete in Muay Thai and MMA. With that in mind, I still got pangs of fear when I saw him. He was just out walking in the evening with his wife, completely oblivious to the effect he had on a stranger walking by, it was weird. I can only imagine what it would be like to picked on daily and physically assaulted...

As a person with ADHD, I am exhausted from dealing with misinformation/stigma from almost every person I meet. People who tell me I talk too much, I'm "too excited", "too energetic", "too weird". Until I met my current bf, I spent 30 years experiencing stigma from every friend or family member I had. I am so grateful for people like Chris Rock who are speaking up and finally educating people. Please just let us be ourselves without judgement, that's all we ask from Neurotypicals.

Damn this hits home. As a Black man who went to a white school, I can totally relate. I absolutely NEVER felt comfortable in my own skin, not with black people nor white people. When you grow up like that without a sense of belonging, there is high potential to develop an identity and to withdraw. Of course there are tools to help kids avoid those outcomes now, but that stuff wasn't around when I was coming up in the 1980s. I was gay too (still am) so that added yet another level to the confusion of my experience and my parents only made things worse. Yep, those formative years left a lot baggage on my back that I still carry around.
@AuntieSDC4 жыл бұрын
D LG, I am a college educated African American Female, and your story [ except I am not Gay ], matches mine. Being Bused out to White Neighborhoods in Middle School and H.S. in NYC in the 1970s, the racist White PARENTS yelling "Nigger go Home", nearly every day as we unboarded and boarded the school bus to leave their White Neighborhood, made me sick to my stomach. Other racist slaps and pulling of my hair by the Whites, still makes me tear up decades later. I was engaged to a German American [ first time I ever dated outside my race], and after 8 years of helping him with his 2 sons [ who I loved like my own blood, taught them to be kind to ALL people, to read, do math, love jazz etc. ] whose mother abandoned them, we did not marry because his Nazi brothers tormented me, and my fiance was too much of a coward to stand up to his Nazi family, he told me "If you cannot accept how my family treats you, it is over". He was not racist, but his saying he loved me, yet NOT standing up for me when his brothers abused me, hurt me more than any racist ever could.

Man, after living in more diverse areas these days, I often think about black kids in diverse or predominantly white schools and I feel grateful that I went to a predominantly black school. Yeah, our school had tons of problems and tested poorly but, I think to go to a white school growing up must be a whole other layer of issues. I can't imagine having to learn about slavery and civil rights and be one of the few and possibly only black kid in the class.

Being the first, or only, anything. Is hell. I ( yes thumbnail is me now ) am 52. I am also a wheelchair / crutch user from birth. I was the only disabled person in all my classes. From grade 6. Through HS, & most of College. I was obviously never going to blend in. That never bothered me. I discovered I could sing at the age of seven. From then on I was doing local theater / winning school talent shows. Blending in never would have been an option. The trouble arose. While doing a play with the popular boy. Who asked me out. Pissing off the popular girl. I was cornered / confronted in the bathroom by her, & her mean girl squad. Told to stay away. I knew she was about to push or knock me down. I planted my feet, & as she was pushing. I raised my crutch & smacked her. Right on the side of the head / face, on the way down. Bruises & scratches on both sides later. She, & the girls were suspended. Imagine that. School authorities had a hard time believing I started / picked, a physical fight. No-one ever accused them of being all that bright. LOL.

Proverbs 25:21-22 If your enemy is hungry, give him food to eat; if he is thirsty, give him water to drink. In doing this, you will heap burning coals on his head, and the LORD will reward you.

When one of my son's friends called me up on the phone one day and said, "Mrs. Keller, they're just so mean to me." I said to him, "Just keep being one of the smartest kids in the class. Get rich. Get a limo. And at the first reunion, pull up with a bunch of hot chicks. I swear to you, it can happen." The kid is doing well (around 34 now) and seems to be living a good life. Chris Rock personifies the advice I gave to kids who were getting teased. Way to go Chris Rock!
@TheJhtlag4 жыл бұрын
I like his quip about the best rapper being a white guy (Eminen at the time), basketball player an asian (Yao Ming) and the best golfer being black (Tiger) he's always been really good about having a deeper context to his humor. "He could have been my friend" Wow. Also, think the "living well is the best revenge" quote is misunderstood, more of a get on with your life, find a purpose, enjoy it, being able to ignore or forget that person is the best way to deal with it in lieu of revenge. (ergo "the best" revenge is to relieve yourself of the anger) I Chris was being compassionate here, not revengeful. He was able to forgive him which is almost something you do more for yourself - ignore or forget the hurt - than for the other guy. I don't see revenge here.

This is really interesting considering his "we need bullies" bit, where he talks about how being bullied is a catalyst for a lot of people's greatness, like Mark Zuckerberg and Bill Gates. It's like, the act of bullying both creates long-term mental health problems, but somehow often yields brighter, more determined individuals who far exceed their bullies (and even their average peers) in life. A bit of a mind fuck, for sure.
@mrsaye4994 жыл бұрын
Interesting, yes, especially when you consider that Chris is actually a little bully himself. That's what his career is based on. He teases and ridicules people and the public laps it up because it's funny. He found a safe platform for his release, one that's profitable.

What this tells us is that most bullies are taught this behavior at home by a bully. It's a sick cycle of perpetuation, much like sexual abuse. The abused become the abusers and to their detriment. Chris's experience exemplifies this.
