Great video! If you ever want to review Josh again, look at his newer live preformances. If you thought 2018 Josh was good, then 2021 Josh is going to amaze you. He's improved so much it's insane.

The first time I saw Josh sing was on SNL and wondered "who is this kid that makes faces while singing, without caring one bit?" I loved it, loved his voice and suggest you listen to his voice in the song "Stardust Chords" - he's phenomenal! He works with a vocal coach on occasion and just keeps getting better! 🔥🔥🔥

You have to do a revisit of Josh in 2021/2022 after seeing more of his latest album's live performances. I think he is improving/expanding. I think what you are trying to say in the end is actually proved by Josh himself. Go back and listen to his performances from 2016-2017. He has been practicing and training that voice for a while now. I think listening to his progressions into 2022 is kind of amazing.

I’ve recently been trying to sing in Josh’s style, but I’ve found that the way he projects his voice is so hard to replicate in a single technique. Your analysis does a great job of highlighting that there is so much more going on than I originally thought. Thank you so much! And I can’t wait to try all these different vocal ideas

I love what you said about the dynamic speaking voice. I fail all the time with certain singing vocals and notes, what have you, but then when I get excited, I can do the exact same note while speaking, i have such an expressive, dymanic speaking voice. And I'm like I know I've got it in me! It's so mental with singing though.

Would love a part two that gets into how he sings newer songs like Heat Above or Stardust Chords, which adds more of that yodeling mixed with clean tones and growling.

Chris - thank you so very much for this upload. Josh is a stunnig vocalist and uses head voice that is exceptional. I have also heard a bit of his chest voice which has a lovely timbre to it But it is his head voice that people 'compare' him to Robert Plant. That he may have the talent and vocal 'chops' of Robert Plant, he has his own vocal talent that needs no comparison. Who could anyone say he is copying? He actually SINGS with joy and excellence. If you haven't yet please check out his vocals on which is just extraordinary. His breath control is next level. If critics think he is just an imitator they don't understand singing at all or just do not like the band. He is breathtakingly good. A band I love. All the way from Australia. x

awesome nazally head voice / mixed voice sounds you have really great demonstration of them here. all these pieces cut out of hi performance. really enjoyable! lots of fun loved watching Chris. maybe one day i can do some version of a fraction of this stuff (but in my own way). thank so much now the next challenging question: is possible to intersperse and alternate this awesome stuff with with the sophisticated front of mouth / forward haping techniques we saw in the last 2 recent videos from that lovely guest you had on. Johnny Craig. because it would kindda seem like they are rather different approaches / vocal style from each other. i like this question because the analogy would be when instrumentally we mix musical styles in a band. for example sea shanties with heavy metal. or other unexpected combinations. that we dont otherwise typically see combine together in the same package. perhaps when the vocal techniques are too different and challenging to mix together at the same time... then the backing singer can sing very differently from the frontman. and different styles can still be combined in that other way. another great avenue for experimentation is beat boxing. because that also requires rapid changes and adjustments. like spinning on a dime. certainly not for beginners like me. at least whilst still trying to learn the basic techniques and get into a particular place. but food for thought

Chris, thanks for pointing out his Cookie Monster approach. I find the epiglottal growl (for lack of a better term) at the start of an upward sequence of notes feels more comfortable and safer than only pushing more air, which tends to sound thin and dries my cords out quickly. Growling sounds fuller during the sequence and allows for more reps. I am curious about the physiology behind this. Does the larynx placement change? Example song for me when using this technique is The Show Must Go On.

Hey Chris! Great video, even if I'm not the biggest Greta van Fleet fan. Not sure if you'll see this but one singer I'd love for you to take a look at is Steve Perry. I think you made a video on mixed voice melodies which included the "somewhere in the night" high note in Don't Stop Believin' but I think a lot of people would appreciate a more comprehensive analysis. On a side note, I do have a question if you don't mind. I'm trying to develop my mixed voice properly and I'm using the vocal fry technique you covered in one of your original mixed voice videos. My question is how hard should I be singing with that technique? I'm finding it really difficult to do it because I feel like I'm singing too hard and it's making high notes difficult to hold even when I'm 100% sure I'm supporting my voice properly. Once again thank you so much for your videos! They're really useful

Ok Chris yes some people can do the voices and cartoon high voices but you make it sound like anyone can and they cant. yes you were blessed with a high voice but to say anyone can do it is just setting them up for a fall. A voice like Josh has is a blessing not everyone can do that. You really cheapen his talent to say anyone can sing like that they can't they just simply cant.

Anyone can learn to make sounds that will free this area of their voices. Not everyone can execute it as well as Josh or other singers, but Josh has practiced a lot too! He's put in the work after the initial discovery. All of us are built with ability to position and posture our tissues and muscles in certain ways so that we can eek out these types of sounds on a primal, un polished level. I've personally witnessed it happen thousands of times. How you hone it and patiently work with the initial sensations once you get them is up to you! Anyone can learn to shoot a basketball. If you put in the work and the introspection and have the right people around you to make you better and better, someday you may be great at it!
