Sadly, that actually kinda happened!!! The toy's mold had been stated by Hasbro and Takara representatives to be one of several whose original molding is either lost or in a state of disrepair too extensive to justify the cost of re-casting, meaning that chances of any future reissues were slim (Until the announcement of the Missing Link figure).

That IDW story really highlighted the true horror of the West’s version of Headmasters. It’s basically giving a human/Nebulon the RoboCop treatment.

what i love about sideswipe and sunstreaker is how despite the same basic vehicle mode, their transformations are quite different. sideswipe "lays on his belly" when doing so while sunstreaker "lays on his back". thus, you have quite different robot mode appearances.

@ He actually made two appearances, same with Hound. They first appear outside Autobot city besides Huffer and Bluestreak as Kup and Hot Rod arrive, then they appear on board the shuttle Optimus Prime arrives on, showing that Sunstreaker and Hound were both at Autobot city and on Moon base 2 at the same time.

His portrayal in Dreamwave comics was short but sweet, showing that darkness. Displaying some Autobots as disturbed, and some Decpts as clouded has always been fascinating to me.

Yeah, I really like the idea of not all Autobots being truly good, and not all Decepticons being truly bad. I think my favorite example of this is Flatline. Flatline is a medic, but he is also a Decepticon. However, he takes his oath as a medic so seriously that he's willing to help anyone who needs medical attention, regardless of what side they're on. And I really like that.

Honestly, with Sunstreaker's bio describing him as a sociopath and his IDW version where he developed hatred for humanity, I wouldn't be suprise if in the future we ever got a story where Sunstreaker joins Decepticons. Heck, maybe make him into Sideswipe's rival, where his brother tries to get him back to the Autobots.

Hello Chris, great content as usual. But may I suggest that you do a Basics on Octane? Figured he'd be an interesting one to cover since he has personally one of my favorite out of context scenes in the G1 cartoon. The one where he said "yeah, thats better" when he switched on a monitor to show a female transformer and all of a sudden his ship explodes and he yelled Galvatron out loud while drifting off into space. Personally my favorite and the most underrated moment in G1 history.

It's 2025 and we're back to another early legacy transformer that no one really did much with storywise until IDW's comics run. It's almost as big of a running gag on the channel as "offlined by a comically-powered Starscream" at this point but just goes to show why those comics are still a high-water mark for many in the fandom, myself included. Here's to the Autobots getting more energon to reactivate the speedy narcissist in Skybound's excellent comic series as well!

It's a shame that the mold for the original Sunstreaker toy is now considered lost, both considering its historical significance, and also because it can't ever be reissued. At least now with Missing Link, the design can live on in a fashion.

It's about time! Ever since your Sideswipe video, my curiosity went up about this bot. I love Sunstreaker a lot despite the ego. In a roleplay I'm in, a friend and I have him and Sideswipe join the Earth Defense Command, using their Jet Judo and combat skills to fight Decepticons and alien threats to our planet. Also, Pyra Magna who was mentioned towards the end is the leader of the Torchbearers, forming the torso of the Combiner Victorion.

I think the main reason Sunstreaker hasn’t had that much appearance outside of the comics is because of his portrayal in IDW’s All Hail Megatron event, which really painted him in a more negative light than heroic as Hasbro always portrays the mainline Autobots. -Having him secretly partner up with Starscream to wipe out Humanity for their transgressions against him. -Letting Mirage take the fall and blame for him, where Ironhide nearly beat him to death within an inch of poor Mirage’s life. And not even apologizing for it. -And even though he “redeemed” himself, he never exactly apologized in a traditional sense for his actions. He never even apologized to humanity or even felt that guilty when Hunter O’Nion died indirectly because of his actions.

Whenever there’s a pair of twins in fiction, me and my twin brother will invariably favor one over the other, which makes dividing them difficult. The only exception so far seems to be Sunstreaker and Sideswipe; I prefer Sunstreaker for actually having a personality. It’s an ugly personality, but it is one.

I find it pretty interesting that Sunstreaker was the first and most prominent headmaster in the (ESCELLENT) IDW comic, he was one of pretty few bots who didn't actually get a headmaster toy even during the "let's make everyone a headmaster" period of the Titans Return toyline… I dunno, as someone who's always considered the comic, not the cartoon or movies, my primary TF media, it feels like a lost opportunity. I'd 100% want a Sunstreaker with a little Hunter headmaster.

I remember buying the Diaclone in 82 when my family was on vacation there to visit my grands, aunts and uncle. I was 7 at the time and bought the red one, along with the black Ironhide, and some other Diaclone items (most notably the ロボット要塞X/FORTRESS ROBOT X). What a time to be alive!

Wow, Sunstreaker really was the precursor and inspiration for multiple future characters that became thei definitive versions if themselves based off of having large egos and being flamboyant like the Alligned Continity's Knockout and Sideswipe ironically who share traits with the character intended to be his twin brother. We really do have a lot to thank for this character even if them themselves haven't been in the spotlight for ages. It's only because of them other characters were ever even created and shone as brightly. I guess he really does live up to the name Sunstreaker.

That 2008 version, alongside Sideswipe, were some of my first ever transformers and Sunstreaker genuienly has been one of my favourite G1 autobots ever since (also helps my favourite color is yellow)

My very first transforming robot was the Diaclone DK-1 (released here in the states as the Diakron DK-1), complete with the little figure that sat in his seat. Everyone always wondered where I got the red Sunstreaker, which is kinda funny because my first Bumblebee toy was also colored red. Still, you can't have a first and not love it, and I cherish that (VERY played with) toy to this day! Thanks for posting!
