Re speed wobble: A speed wobble is normally caused by excessive stability - so as the wheel deflects a small amount, say to the left, the bike steering geometry (mainly rake and trail) pulls the wheel back to straight - in this case to the right. If the corrective force is too strong, the wheel overshoots and it passes past centre to the right. If the deflection response is more than the initial deflection the steering will go into this increasingly vilont movement. In your case it seems that the response was not that strong. Normally the damping of the tyre and riders hands would stop this, but as you had your hands off there was no damping applied by your hands. So what changed ? The rim diameter is fixed at 622 mm but the wider front rim on the 6 wheels (wider front than rear) could have something to do with it. If the wheel radius changed the trail would change which could affect the stability. There was an article from about 1978 (that I have a copy of somewhere) that determined that the stability co-efficient of a bicycle should be between, if I remember correctly, 2 and 4. Used it when I was building fully streamlined recumbents in the 1980's and 1990's. Unfortunately there is not much that you can do about it as the bike geometry is fixed. You might try playing with the tyre pressure or try fitting a size thinner tyre. Also might try a wider rear tyre. as differential tyre sizes do affect the steering response. I recently changed from a 23 front and 25 rear on my old but fast aero bike to 25 and 25 and it did have a (slight but noticeable) negative effect on how it responded.. My other bike runs 28 and 30 wide tyres and also steers well.
@_gregvalencia5 күн бұрын
One thing to note is that his wheelset has the same internal/external dimensions. 24mm internal and 31.5mm external (according to their website). Chris has the 50|58 set. The 45|50 is the set with the super wide 28mm internal in the front and then narrower in the rear. Do you think it would be spoke tension like Chris hypothesized that would cause the wheel to be over responsive?
@MikeKramer-x3c5 күн бұрын
@@_gregvalencia I was looking at what had changed - which was the wheels but did think it was the 45/50 ones. Given that these No 6 rims are equal width and therefore the tyre geometry would be about the same as on the other wheels, my theory can't be right. But the No 6 wheels have carbon spokes and the other wheels presumably had steel spokes and we know that carbon spokes are more rigid than steel. We also know the No 6 wheels are lighter. The reduced mass and increased stiffness would change the natural frequency of the wheels (in the steering rotation direction). If the natural frequency of the wheel (mass/stiffness) is close to the natural frequency of the steering system (rake & trail and tyre response) you would get an amplification of the response which could well be the reason for the speed wobble.
@rayF4rio5 күн бұрын
My first thought was the orientation of the bladed spokes in relation to the relative wind. At high rotational. Speeds, if the spokes are wide enough, they might create lateral force, and if not all spokes are oriented exactly the same, that may lead to oscillations. I know wheel builders check spoke orientation, but they are never all at the exact same tolerance. The carbon spokes are getting much wider that ever before in relation to the weight of these wheels.

could also check the balance of the wheel. I resolved by wheel wobble by finding the low spot (the point the wheel always stops at, at the bottom), stuck a golf club weight on the rim on the opposite side, then there was no low spot, wheel balance fixed. eg the same as when they put a counter weight on your car wheels when you get new tyres. given my wobble was at 70+ kmh hands on the bars.

27.2 seatposts fanboy here 👋🏼 I’m still stuck on rim brakes but wanting to make the jump (finally) to Disc. For me though the one hard must a frame must have is a 27.2 seatpost with a traditional collar. They just work. Are less prone to slippage and if I strip the collar by accident it’s a simple fix. How many watts would I be losing over an aero post? Don’t care. I’m averaging 28-30kph/hr on most rides - it makes stuff all difference to me. And you’re bang on about it not being my price point

It's an absolute go to for one day races. But for a typical TdF stage, where he's shielded from the wind behind his teammates until everyone has blown up, and then throws down an impossible attack on a terribly steep climb just before a summit finish? The V4RS could be better for that.

@@tommyfreckmann6857 out of the Colnagos, the one I ride the most is Davide Formolo’s primary race bike that he used in 2022 (a V3rs). I rarely race that one though because of its historical collectibility and I’d be really bummed out if I lost it in a pileup. I have 4 C40s as well, one of which was custom built in 2002 for Dario Cioni who was on Team Mapei. The Colnago I actually race the most is a C64, but it’s probably the bike I care for the least. I bought it as a repaired frame for a really good price, so if it gets destroyed again, I won’t be heartbroken about it. The bike on my trainer is a 2010 Colnago EPS.

@chrishophoto that's a good insight. How do the C40s compare? C40 is my favorite Colnago I have owned. It's definitely not the stiffest, but I just love the legacy behind it. And mine is modernized and literally no slower than my other modern race bikes.

@@tommyfreckmann6857 I own the C40s primarily as collectible legacy art pieces at this point. Two of them are mk2s and the other two are mk3s. The Mk3 is noticeably stiffer at the back end, but all suffer from a lack of tire clearance, which is understandable given when they were produced. The Star forks with 1” steerer tubes also flex an awful lot when compared to modern bikes. About speed wobble, I had a similar issue with a sl8 and roval rapide clx 1. The bike came with turbo conti tire in 26mm. I have changed the wheels to the crw 50 60 with 30mm conti gp and the wobbling completely disappeared. Then the seatpost was too flexible (not related to wobble), so I have bought the darimo and have asked for the reinforced one despite not being overweight. Today coming back to the rapide cl1 with 30mm tir, the wobbling is no more there. The speed wobble come from a resonance of the complete bike system, so to solve it, you have to change element to a more flexible or a more rigid one. This is not necessarily carbon spoke. I guess one should change in order of cheap to expansive: - the tire - the seatpost - the wheel - the frame

Speed wobble is caused from vibrations that come from a combination of the entire system. You can try balancing the wheels, but it can happen to any bike, but you may have a bad combination of gear. Dampening the system will help but that will add weight and how can you dampen a frame, wheel, and forks if not internally would look weird

I'm pretty sure it has to do with the rider inputs, a similar wobble occurs when beginning slacklining, applying a death grip to the handlebars or otherwise fighting it makes it worse. Regarding dampening, that's a proposed benefit of roller bearing headsets, aside from the longevity they introduce a bit of friction.

Great show again! Re: wheel wobble. I think it’s more to do with the tire being slightly too narrow and rotational weight of the wheel changing with the new wheel in combination with the bike geometry, stack height, etc of the front end of the bike. The tire on your other rims may have been dampening the chatter. I notice this more on older road bikes and the slacker head tube angles combined with a shorter stem when slammed- especially on XC MTBs with negative rise stems- the wheel can start to chatter- mainly due to trail. So the different wheel and its mass could have change the forces at play just a bit to mess with your handling. Easiest fixes would 1) be change the front tire for something wider to increase dampening, 2) increase the stem length, increasing leverage, 3) increase stack height with a spacer, moving the leverage arm further from the bearing, or pivot, of the headset… Might also be a good time too brush up on Chapter 8, Steering, Balance, and Stability, of Bicycle Science 4th ed. by Wilson & Schmidt.

if you've ever ridden a tri-spoke wheel on a really deep frame/fork design you may notice that wobble some so my guess is the frame combined with the carbon spokes is allowing too much air to dissipate on either side of the frame. Mix that with the wider tire. My guess is that the downtube wheel cutout wasn't designed around a 30mil tire. Is it wider than the frame profile?

The wheel wobble issue sounds like it might be a balance problem? Not enough to cause an issue when controlled but on its own could be enough to move the bars and often overlooked in bike wheels

It would be cool if you guys could at least once a month promote an Australia bike part or frame thats NOT mass produced. For example, from a custom builder such as Baum, Llewellyn, etc. I realise you want to appeal to a world audience, but promoting well made and Australian made products would broaden your audience too. Fast is cool, aero is cool. Great quality local engineering is cool too. Just a thought. By the way I'm enjoying the ramblings, keep up the good work.

Request - perhaps a discussion about whether the UCI needs to review the minimum bike weight rule. These days it easy to build a sub 6.5kg set-up without even having to go with top end components or titanium this and that.

You are really going to price the new lower weight bikes right out of the market even more so than they are now.

Not jealous, ENVEous… like those wheels. Jealous is how you’d feel if Dave was talking to your spouse, envy is when you’re upset Dave got an opportunity you didn’t , and ENVE is the wheel supplier. Lol ❤ Love you guys

TOUR MAGAZINE TEST ASAP for the new Colnago! That big hole in the middle of the triangle is intriguing. FCR looks like a Carbon Copy (pun intended) of the 2018 VENGE. Almost identical

I am actually still sitting on my Bianchi oltre xr4 and the newer bikes did not really convince me (mostly optical and weight wise, i knew they are better 😅) The new colnago though... Damn this is something really fresh. This looks really new, the front looks cool and performance wise i would make an actual jump. Guess i will finally go to disc bikes 😂 Rip my wallet

I have exactly the same issue on my S5 with the latest EVO S 50mm wheelset. The problem is the geometry of the bike. This is why the pro's are using smaller frames with 120/130mm stems
@davidlilja91803 күн бұрын
After moving to 140 stems, I asked Cervelo about how long was Ok. They told me nothing above 130 would keep their warranties intact. Dammit.

I've got an S5, winspace 65mm wheelset, and also get head wobbles above 55kmph, usually while descending

Short stem? Narrow bars?
@D_H_88_995 күн бұрын
@discbrakefan this was with 100mm stem, 380mm bars. I've gone to 140mm stem and kept the 380mm bars, raised the head with 2x spacers. It's settled it up quite a lot, but still not perfect at very high speed.

Next year, I'm gonna count how many times a new Colnago lost the sprint finish :D To prove that bike is ~ 1% of success )) Pog can win on the 2020 Colnago frame pretty much any race.
@gregmorrison73206 күн бұрын
Those bars don't look like sprinters bars, Cervelo does them better, not for aero but for sprinting.

If the bike was ready this time last year why are they not on production bikes yet? Why is the computer mount still a proto?
@AdamGross-j6d6 күн бұрын
An obvious potential culprit for wheel wobble would be unequal tension on the spokes. Can you test spoke tension with those carbon spokes? I've experienced it. And in my case, I actually had a spoke completely unwind itself. It was barely hanging in. So the wheel was stiffer on one side than the other. However, it was a kind of bump/wobble feeling. Like the front wheel was hitting a speed bump before shaking. Which sounds like it's different than what you had. I would also check the steering assembly. That everything is nice and tightened down. That's got nothing to do with the wheels - it may just be coincidence that the pre-load bolt loosened around the same time these new wheels went onto your bike.

Yeah a small imbalance (couple grams) in the wheel and the rotational forces will magnify this at increased speed. But even a slight imbalance in the airflow passing the wheels could cause oscillating forces on the front. This then creates a resonant wobble at the front end. I have seen this on a friends bike that happens even when he is holding the handlebars. I have ridden bikes where it happens above a certain speed once I take my hands off. Tricky to fix as it is a combination of the frame and wheel setup as a whole. Looks like you might need a whole new bike ;)
@petermac996 күн бұрын
23:06 Chris might want to check where the battery location is in his S5 when using Shimano😉. This is absolutely the norm for anything with a cutaway in the seat tube. It’s not influencing Shimano vs SRAM use.

I welcome Colnago becoming competitive again, 2 deal breakers for me. I'm guessing no aerobar clip on option? And I just can't get behind the brand itself. The word along the downtube, It just doesn't resonate with me currently..maybe my mind will shift in time
