i think you should build the downtown on the archipelago, some major land reclamation but you wouldn’t have the issue of the water being at such steep angles. also, a lot of manhattan is from reclaimed land from the bay, so i think it’d be pretty realistic. love ur vids ❤️

I’ve actually built a city that’s basically another major city in NY not far from NYC that’s just as important called Nieuw Amsterdam. I even have a neighborhood called Haarlem.

Being a Canberran, it’s alway nice to hear a mention about road layout design in Cities Skylines video. Canberra roads are so unique. Almost everything is about 15-20mins away in no traffic (except for Tuggeranong down south which is more 25-35mins) thanks to road design. It’s only heading towards the city centre where a high amount of public servants go to work do the roads become busy or jammed during a 20min-30min rush hour before 9am.

NJ Native here! Northern NJ actually has some little mountains in the NW which you could always take a look at for inspiration when you build up on the hill. There's also huge swaths of rural areas as well the farther south you go as well as suburban sprawl as well. You also gotta add a boardwalk on the water!

I live in Jersey City, you should try and capture the 6th street embankment (abandoned railroad like the high line in NYC, but not yet developed). Also the palisades dominate this area, with the 'heights' on the top of the cliff (with some super nice houses on the edge) and downtown towards the hudson. This whole area used to be railroads but has now been mostly removed. For the subway look at the PATH

Great video! New York is a great place to reference and I'm glad to see our city inspiring parts of the build :) For your Jersey City inspired section, I'd suggest adding in a rail line (when available) or a former right-of-way or yard close to the water. Jersey City once had 4 large rail terminals and freight yards next to each other taking up a large majority of the waterfront up until the 1960's. Maybe a redeveloped portion could be a park or community hub?

The centre of the city’s layout kinda reminds me of the road layout in downtown Detroit. Would be really interesting to build a city like Detroit or NYC, that initially grew massively with industry, but then went into significant decline as the industry disappeared, and much of the city was razed for urban renewal and highways. You could then work to revitalise the city but re-desnifying the urban core, downgrading highways, opening up the waterfront , building good quality public transport etc.

I started a river delta city with the intention of making something a bit like New York. A few hours in I realized I had actually made Hoboken, NJ by accident. The steep elevation near the shoreline in this map is definitely reminiscent of the Jersey City area.

Wow, making a city that feels like NYC is gonna be quite the challenge, the gridsystem, the history with the first Dutch Settlement that still resembles the Dutch city of Gouda, the way many cityplanners and cityarchitects look at NYC. There is so incredibly much information about this place and it is in of itself really unique! I'm incredibly excited to see how it turns out and as Le Corbusier once said about NYC: "Your skyscrapers are too small and everything is too close together."

@@twodollarstwenty New Orleans would be a great city for you to consider, with the history from French, Spain occupations contributing to its unique architecture (French Quater, Jackson Square), to the swamps, countryside, old plantations from pre civil war era America, the ferrys, housing projects, history such as ghost hauntings, voodoo priests, above ground cemeteries , birth of jazz music and blues, the abandoned amusement park(Six Flags/Jazzland) to the modernization of its downtown and how Canal St. basically separate American from pre-American architecture , and the early mafia influence, and also how it went from the 1 of the most populous city in the US to one of its smallest after the Gold Rush/ West migration , is enough for inspiration. I hope you consider P.S, the fact that’s it’s below sea level could add a challenge in the game by actually building a wall/ levee that’s stops it from flooding in game. Also, the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina

Exciting! New Jersey has a lot to offer… It’s called the garden state so some of your suburbs should be lush and manicured. Check out places like Chatham and Morristown for examples of wealthy suburb towns flung out on train lines! You can even see on maps a line where the gray ends and green begins a few miles west of Newark. Looking forward to this city!

Jersey City resident here. If you want to capture the spirit of NJ, I think you need 4 things: - Dense urban area close to Manhattan with legacy industrial infrastructure that got converted to mixed use areas - Insane industrial areas with highly complex road infrastructure. Think NJ turnpike with crazy intersections, the skyway that is insanely high, and loads of railroad - Suburbia, lots of it. Don't forget to connect them to trains - Rural areas. NJ farming is surprisingly important for the northeastern region

Also as someone from NJ I know we are known for being packed together and our industry but please do include the parks are greenery we have in our state! Also put in trains and tunnels from the nj side to the ny side because many New Jerseyans take the train from nj to ny to get to work!

The city on the New Jersey side (or even the main city if you want) could be called Dollarford or New Dollarford. Also, with the hilly terrain, I could see the Jersey city be based off of Montreal, Quebec or New Haven, Connecticut. Also, the new East Coast America region pack will come in handy for this new city!

North of Jersey City is a place called Weehawken, there are a lot of old/big suburb houses and it has a very nice park/path along the river that provides great views of NYC. Would be cool to see in this world!

I live in New Jersey, about an hour west of the area you're working on, and pretty familiar with a lot of the Jersey areas. I doubt you'll get this far out, but you may reach the Great Swamp. You'll certainly have Newark International Airport within your zone, and it has some of the most spaghetti-roads I've ever seen, including CS1. I'm excited for this series, and because you'll at least be showing a glimpse of New Jersey outside of the NYC area and NJ Turnpike corridor. We have forests, mountains, swamps, and some nice sceenery, not just junkyards, factories, and urban sprawl.

One interesting thing to look into is the reason for Jersey City essentially looking like a second (third? fourth? fifth?) CBD for NYC. It used to be full of various train terminals for both freight and passengers due to the difficulty of running full size trains under the Hudson River. As such, the cities of Jersey City and Hoboken have lots of new development, as well as their own subway system that was used to connect all the train terminals

I live in Jersey, 15 minutes from Jersey City .. everything is crowded. That’s all you need to keep in mind. Parks are weirdly shaped based on what areas are available, but not big.

Glad to see you are using NJ for inspiration. I live close to where you are creating. There is a lot in that area and if you go west on the map, you start into Bergen County, which has lots of small to medium size towns, including the Mall Capital of the World, Paramus. The Passaic River borders Bergen County by towns like Fair Lawn. For your city name, there are quite a few Indian names from the Lenape Indian tribes used in the area. Ho-Ho-Kus is one. Oakland for the Oak trees and was a vacation spot for New Yorkers. I'll suggest the city name of Red Mill for the actual red mill that is on the border of Fair Lawn and Paramus, NJ. There is so much history in this part of NJ. Thanks again for doing this!

I really love that the games allows to terraform the hell out of our maps and laying down streets till sunrise without tellung us to go bunkrupt! I layed down a Tokio style city and i absolutely love it in CS II. Also I'm a big fan that the roads not only have more lanes but instead have so many different wides.

As someone from this part of NJ, I love to see it. I saw someone mention the rails, and I agree, they're super important. Love the ridge behind the city. The further north in Jersey you go along the edge of the river, the cliff gets closer to the riverbank which allows for some hyper wealthy people to build their mansions or big building complexes with crazy Manhattan views--I used to work at one of these mansions as a landscaper and the owners had their own hiking trail so... the wealth is wild. Definitely include ferries when you can. I also will say that NJ, especially around JC, Newark, and West NY have a history for being cheaper than Manhattan and less desirable due to crime, but in the past 10 years development/gentrification has made JC and others as expensive as areas of Brooklyn and other NYC boroughs. A super unique section of NJ is the meadowlands which you mention. Basically the marshes and waterways that purify and clean the polluted water. The trains from interior NJ go through this to places like JC, Newark and into NYC. Huge sports stadiums and malls are plopped right in the middle as well as tons of heavy industry and smokestacks--so excited you're interested in recreating it. Anyways good luck!

As someone born and raised in New Jersey, this very much excites me! I hope you include our jughandles. NJ is the densest state, so there's a lot of traffic and we use jughandles in a lot of places instead of normal u turns because they handle so much more traffic. They're all over the state. We also have a surprising amount of farmland, just not near the city. I can't wait for more installments of this series!

New Jerseyean here! Love the idea, but to capture the feel of the whole state, you'll def have to be very varied, here's a quick summary. Jersey shore - Barrier Island shore towns, immensely popular during the summer and ghost towns in the winter, long boardwalks, carnival style games, water parks and rollercoasters, Victorian era homes and hotels plus natural beauty of the intercoastal waters and long beaches. South (inland Jersey) Philly suburbs with small old America style towns (somewhat walkable built around a single main street) with colonial architecture, this gives way to expansive farm land (being the "Garden State" NJ is known for feeding the Philly-NYC Metro with the food from our farms) and forest in flat terrain. North Jersey- industrial base for NYC, large sprawling NY suburbs, University towns, foothills of the Appalachians, wealthy single family households in the hills of the northwest. So there's some info for you and good luck!

The Dutch settled what is now the Financial District on Manhattan. Notice the non-gridded road layout of this area. Then, as the city expanded to the north, east, and west, you see a much more gridded layout take shape. You usually do a great job taking into account how a city transforms over history. I love that about your builds. Secondly, a note about industry around NY/NJ. The wharfs on Manhattan mostly aren’t functioning industrial wharfs anymore. Look to Bayonne for inspiration for chemical terminals, Kearny for inspiration for an island dedicated to warehouses/industry, and Port Newark for inspiration for a container port. Looking forward to the series!

New Jersey is a fun place. It’s a lot of highway in NJ. It feels like everything is highway there. Like businesses are directly on a 55 mph road where the left of 4 lanes is going 65 and the right lane is going 25. My sister lives there so I visit often and that’s my perspective of what NJ feels like from a midwesterner lol

Love the new city start! Check out the Brooklyn street grids. They are rotating in directions because the grids started as small farming towns and then had to find a way to crash into each other as the towns grew and smooshed together.

I found out the hard way that rivers flow downhill in CS2 as they do in real life. You could, for each location, level terrain upriver to downriver and then smooth instead of making the entire river sea level. It's a lot of work either way, but I found the former method is effective too (but you'll have to deal with the ravine effect you get somehow. Awesome start looking forward to more.

Through in some hydroelectric damns upstream when you have the milestones unlocked and use them where you drop the water levels - you can create larger water bodies like lakes and wetlands behind them.

Native of Northern NJ. The real thing to think about is how you are going to get people to the city (manhattan), and how that changed over time. Bridges, Tunnels, buses, ferries etc. Hoboken and JC sit on a bit of a ridge, that over look NYC. Behind that ridge is a very flat flood plain that is the Meadowlands, where suburbia doesn't really pick up until after that flood plain. Look up Rutherford and The Meadowlands stadium complex. A really cool feature to work in would be in the Lincoln Tunnell helix.

Have you ever looked at Duluth, Minnesota? It’s similarly situated at the mouth of a river, has pretty dramatic elevation changes, and partly stretches out along a barrier island. Not exactly East Coast, but it’s a port city of about the same period as a lot of activity in New Jersey.

so *extremely* here for the New Jersey inspiration!! it gets a lot of grief, but Jersey City, Newark, Hoboken, the N. Jersey suburbs and some spots along the coast (like Sea Isle City) have all been good to me. I'd also check out Long Island City/Astoria in Queens, for further inspiration/cityscapes - mostly because it's got some of that mix of old industry/converted factories/waterfront warehouses mixed in new skyscrapers, exposed/above-ground transit, and some surviving/active industry in pockets. really interesting area!

I SCREAMED when you said you were doing New York. FINALLY! since its safe to assume Gramercy is never coming back. Here's a suggestion of names for an alternate version of fair city. Liberty City (lol) Ironbound (for Bronx) Dyker (for Brooklyn) Mamaroneck (for Manhattan) Elizabeth (for Queens) Port George or Castleton (for Staten Island) anyway cant wait to see where this goes (edit: i cant believe this is going to be more Jersey how could you betray me like this)

Love your content and excited for your CS2 stuff, but I just have to say choosing archipelago haven for a new york map is hilarious, especially when barrier island basically looks like Long Island.
