This is one of the main problems I have with Civ V. Especially at higher difficulties, which force you into waging war (or, exploiting war, since the AI is so bad at it) in order to be "competitive'. This, in turn, breeds the practice of simply letting the AI's build all the wonders, with the intention of simply taking them later. It's just an oversimplified system, and it makes playing a "builder civ" virtually impossible, unless you're playing on Prince or lower difficulty. In many ways, this is what makes playing on higher difficulties actually "easier". Waging war is (arguably) the easiest way for a human player to catch up and/or pull ahead of the AI's (because the AI's are so incredibly bad at waging war). And since the AI's have more money/gold at higher difficult levels, and better production, you can actually extract more advantages from them in the long run. In other words, there is virtually no incentive to play a defensive, "builder" game. Civ V is simply not designed that way; the infantile way in which the game handles "difficulty" levels just kills the possibility.

Petra is Awesome. it gives you a caravan and +1 P and F for each hill. from the tiles i can see from turn 0 you would get 5 more food and production. That is almost twice as much as the hanging gardens and it also make the incense workable.

There’s a city spot for Petra a bit to the west of Thebes surrounded by hills, oasis’s, and plantation luxury resources. It quickly becomes my strongest city and a few horseman units easily defend it with the open desert tiles

Quill, The fact that Morocco could be present and could beat you to the Petra, is actually a redicuisly good reason to make sure they dont get it by building it yourself. Desert morocco with petra is a bad neighbour to have, and you also have the zulus to worry about in the future

If it's a joke, forget about my comment else - Egyptian Culture is long dead. Ever since Alexander Conquered it, it's been sort of dead. By the time the Romans annexed it, it was almost completely Helennic. Then Byzantine and then Arab/Muslim culture.

+lePaddox completely unrelated. The modern and ancient Assyrians had and have nothing to do with the Iranian ethnicities. Caucasian in origin, the Assyrians heavily intermixed with semites such as the Arameans. No Arabic intermixing though.

I cried when you didn't move your starting settler. Moving next oasis or onto hill or onto sugar (you still get the luxury plus you always get extra 2 gold) or anything would have been much better. The starting tile is pretty much the worst possible.

Frank Glover I just use my warriors and archers to do that. I get that they are slower but their strength outweighs the speed issue-especially considering the fact that I play with raging barbarians.

Yeah but I was referring to marbozir using that phrase quite a lot, you pretty much hear it at least once in all his videos. And since quill has played some games with Marbozir I was implying that he started saying it because he had heard marbozir say it so many times. Doesn't have to be the case but it's a high chance. And yes I realize it's a common phrase but still.

IMO the let someone else build them and take their wonders "strat" is boring and weak - I'm hoping that somewhat changes in Civ VI.

I am with you. But it is a problem with how they design the different difficulties. Instead of making them smarter, or better at strategy, they just give them more and more free things, while you get less. Which turns playing in higher difficulties from "I have to play better and be a better tactician" into "I have to rely on tricks in the early game to not die, and then I can steam roll the AI" So his strategy is sadly pretty much the only option in his difficulty. But hey, if Civ has been known for something, that thing would be for making very different games from one to the next, so... we will see, I guess.

That's a problem in almost all strategy games. If they can't give the AI an APM advantage, they give it omniscience or free resources or both and more. Don't worry, though. Our robot overlords will be fantastic at video games, finally giving us that satisfying challenge we all crave.

VP AI was absolutely insane. I went from relaxing in Emperor to being neck and neck with AI in Warlord...even though they don't receive any bonuses.

why not just ICS going liberty and piety, grab Glory to God and faith purchase everything? temples allow ICS to go taller than usual and faith production can reach hundreds to a thousand+ fpt on this map. this map is so massive and the penalties to going wide are vastly diminished compared to standard size. The benefit from tradition always seems less beneficial on this map.

So questions: a.) Why did you not move your settler one hex towards the hills or silver for more production out of the gate? b.) with both sugar and incense in your immediate area, why the hell did you not go for calendar? Plantations increase both food and gold from these and maybe get you some production from that? If nothing else, more food means more people, and more people automagically mean more production. And more money means you do not need much in terms of production, because, lol, buy it with gold? c.) No, Egypt should not start with STONE they should start with MARBLE, which further increases wonder build speed, gives production which further increases build speed and money again. Maybe it should start with salt for gold, money and with a mine production. Furthermore, if you pair petra with desert folklore belief, every single not flood plains desert tile will give you +1food, +1production, +1belief. IN ADDITION TO what you do on the tile! So a hill will give that PLUS what the mine gives you. Same for luxury ressources. d.) why did you build the monument? Why not go for the honour opener while building scouts to find and fight barbarians with for culture, xp and money, which you then use for the openers of tradition and liberty, which will both give +3/+1 culture in your starting city and later give you a free monument in your first 3 cities and also lower your culture cost for new cities and give you free workers and settlers? e.) also, in the same vein, why did you not beeline the wheel for the water wheel, which will give you both more food and more production in your city as long as it is on that river?

Plantations on luxuries don't give extra food, just +1 gold. He says that in the video. Calendar is pointless at the start without a worker. He says in the video that he's not getting Calendar because he won't have a worker by time it's finished. He says Egypt should start with Stone because it's a fixed map and he thinks there is Stone in that area. It has nothing to do with the benefits of the resource. He says that in the video. He has also explained why he isn't going for Petra in the video. That's a few questions already answered in the actual video, from what I recall. Perhaps you should watch it.

I can't speak for Jolly, who doesn't seem interested in answering, but I'm sorta anti-twitch myself, and the entire problem is the chat. It's just dumb, it encourages people to act dumb, the memes are unfunny, and it makes me feel dumb to watch it. Closing the chat doesn't help because the streamer is still going to be interacting with the stupid, which you now can't see, making it inferior to a regular KZbin Let's Play. That being said, Quill's streams are actually pretty chill. You don't see as much obnoxious behavior and the moderators keep down the spam posts. Plus, I have a knack for making him laugh, the few times I've tuned in, and that's always a nice feeling.
