Bismarck looks so proud. He's probably thinking "It was a most excellent choice to make me represent the country I built along with Wilhelm I. He's called in sick for the moment and left me in charge. Sehr gut!"
@Exodon202010 жыл бұрын
Wilhelm's last words to Bismarck before he died: "It was never easy being Kaiser while having you in charge." According to the constitution of the German Empire the Emperor should have only played a representative and a minor political rule (he was the one to sign laws before they apply). Just like in the British monarchy. The Chancellor however could be seen as Prime Minister. In fact it's the same job but called differently for cultural reasons. Wilhelm II was not happy with that role and as the constitution required the Kaiser's approval for a new Chancellor he used it to establish puppets and rule through them.

Willhelm did almost nothing. He was just a figurehead that was controlled by his advisor
@justinpachi37074 жыл бұрын
Leander Schätz That’s actually not very accurate since Bismarck regularly consulted and informed his King and later Kaiser first before making any real decisions. Wilhelm I was more of an army man and had seen action in the Napoleonic Wars. His passion was the army, and he was quite instrumental in maintaining Prussia’s core strengths while also making critical reforms. The relationship between the Old Kaiser and the Iron Chancellor was collaboration would probably be best described as a diarchy of sorts.
@one-wingedangel51074 жыл бұрын
Justin Pachi Well Then from what you said, then Bismarck could have truly been the puppeteer to Wilhelm's puppet since the Kaiser gave Bismarck the position of head of government, and with that power then Bismarck could very well have made Prussia, later Germany, into his ideal image while the Kaiser was unaware. This is probably why the Germanic Empire fell since Bismarck couldn’t work together with the new Kaiser, and when he died, the empire he worked so hard for, also fell apart.

I thought the comment section would be discussing Beethoven's Ode to Joy, but all I see is people talking about Hitler. If you think Hitler is fit to represent the German nation and people, you do not know nearly anything about history all together as well Germany's own history. If Hitler was representing Germany in Civ5 than the developers would have put Nixon as America, Francisco Franco as Spain, Saddam Hussein as Babylonia, and Nero for Rome. There is so much more to German history than the 12 years of the Nazi Party's reign. If it wouldn't be Bismarck than it could be Frederick I of Prussia, Ludwig II of Bavaria, or Frederick Barbarossa of the Holy Roman Empire.

I'm not a musical expert but I have to say the chords from 1:22 - 1:37 are quite gripping to me. Quite fitting for Bismarck I thought, as well as Germany at the time looking forward; a newly formed empire, rising and optimistic. yet by the time the 15 seconds are over it seems more melancholy, almost a feeling of longing and squandered opportunity: The German century that never came to fruition. That's what those 15 seconds of music say to me.

Well, the first Kaiser fully supported Bismarck and accepted him as person in charge. With his last breaths he said: "It was never easy to be Kaiser under your command, Herr Reichskanzler". The Second Kaiser only ruled for a few weeks and then he also died and so 28 year old Wilhelm II. was crowned and he didn't listen to Bismarck and dreamed of a "sunny place" for his country meaning a Colonial Empire in opposition to England. So he simply fired Bismarck and replaced him with a puppet.

Alsace and Lorraine were conquered by the French from the holy Roman empire in the 1600s and remained German speaking despite French occupation up until ww1, and Germany regained them in the Franco Prussian war. French revanchism followed because they believed the clearly German area to be French, which led to their annexation by France after ww1, and again after ww2, the latter of which led to their colonisation by the French. Alsace and Lorraine should be German, but French colonisation after defeat of Germany in the world wars has prevented justice from occurring.

It can be argued that Bismarck and Wilhelm I kept Imperial Germany in check, although France and England didn't want a unified Germany. Once Wilhelm I died and his son took over, The road to WWI was in motion. Once Bismarck was gone, Wilhelm II begun to shape Germany up for war.
@Exodon202010 жыл бұрын
The son of Wilhelm I was Frederick III however as he was already terminally ill when crowned Wilhelm I knew that his grandson Wilhelm II will take over the throne pretty soon after his own death. In Germany the year of 1888 is also called "Dreikaiserjahr" (Year of three Emperors) for that reason.

There are considerable cultural differences between the French who dissolved the HRE and the Franks who established it. As for the Italians, I'm not sure they "liked" the unity of empire... They "liked" it enough to rebel against Austria in 1848 and 1859, after all. The order is as follows: Holy Roman Empire 962-1806 German Empire 1871-1918 Nazi Germany 1933-1945

Your right about it being the Second Reich and the First Reich is the HRE, but the HRE was actually called Holy Roman Empire because the Pope entitled The Emperors of Germany as the Emperor of the Romans by crowning them as such, the First Holy Roman Emperor was Otto I; being crown makes them official Roman emperors, and they were crowned by the pope and thus entitled "Holy". The ones who wanted the roman empire to last longer was actually the Byzantine Empire.
