CLARKE Weld 85EN NO GAS MIG Welder Liner replacement new 0.8mm tip install Wire Feed Repair [HOW TO]

Had this CLARKE Weld 85EN NO GAS MIG Welder for a few years, in this video we try to repair it and get it working again. The wire will not feed correctly into the gun, it sticks and have to play around with the wire feed, remove gun tip and manually pull up some welding wire to get it working again. Even after all this, it will fail again after a few uses.
To try and get this CLARKE Weld 85 MIG welder working again we replace the internal liner / sleeve and fit some new 0.8mm tips. Would love to get into doing more welding, working on my skills, can we get this 1990's welder working again?

The drive wheel is only for the diameter of the wire used. Normally on these machines they use 0.6 an 0.8. What diameter wire is in the welder now? Because if its 0.9 the drive wheel cant pull the wire through as its slightly to big in diameter. Its not the inner lining feed to the torch. Mig welders can be a right pain to set up if you dont know what your doing. Take the drive wheel off and clean it up on each side itll tell you the size wire it can use.you also have the spool to loose. It shouldn't move freely as that. It should be enough to roll it forward but not enough to roll back on its self. Thats why the wire is spooling up like it is. Tighten the spool slightly and reduce the tension on the wire feed. Hope this helps.

This welder has its place and that is to the hobby welder who does not want the added complication and cost of gas, regulators etc, though I wouldn’t recommend it myself because you cannot control the wire speed. It’s good on thin plate as it goes down to a low amperage @27amp maxing at 85 allows you to weld mild steel upto 2.5mm I have three Clarke machines. The 151EN which is gas no gas but permanently connected to Co2, the pro 90en, much like yours but much better as has wire speed control and can take gas too, but I use it gasless but prob going to rig this up to Co2 instead and sell the 151 as that is too heavy duty for me. My Clarke Arc-Tig 150, is my go to for thick steel. By the way never put lubricant down the liner. Any lube or oil will grab the dirt and make the wire drag and or stick. They are not worth cleaning just buy new or if you have to clean them blow them out with compressed air. Your settings are: Thickness/switches .6 to.8 Min min .8 to 1 Min max 1-1.5 Max Min 2-2.5 max max Remember too that with flux core wire it produces a coating. This slag is tapped free leaving the shiny weld below.

Thanks for the information, the setting information you provided is good to know, will make a note of these. Makes sense not spraying lubricant down the liner - was told to do this as a service on the machine which I guess is bad information.

I managed to pick one of these up on eBay locally for a £5 and ordered a new liner, tips and flux core wire on eBay. You can also buy a few capacitors for less than a tenner are increase power by 25% which is pretty awesome. Weakest point on this machine is the spool feed, it is inconsistent with the drive, other than that it is a perfect beginner machine and for use on cars (panels and exhausts!)

@@luistom7037 hi, sorry, I bought it a long time ago on eBay and it is no longer in my history. Don’t panic too much as the liners are pretty universal, so you can buy one longer than your existing and cut it down to size. Other parts you can remove, measure and order replacements. For Flux Core welders (no gas) the only thing to remember is to buy an assortment of tip sizes, typically the tip will need to be slightly larger than the diameter of the welding wire you will be running, but these are very cheap consumable items, so won’t cost a lot to get an assortment 👍

The black thing is the liner, it’s just a hollow tube that the welding wire feeds through, it’s like a stiff nylon material and tolerances for the diameter of it are not critical, eBay search for Clarke or Sealey mig liner and get about 3 meters of it and install it starting at the box end of the welder, you can trim it to size at the gun end with a Stanley knife or blade 👍

I was using a generic trim removal tool, you can use your fingers to do the same thing, the ring has to be pushed back evenly to allow the liner to be removed.

You aren't going to get a consistent feed if the wire on the roller looks like a birds nest.
