Hi Chris, I wish I would have found this video some months ago.....I just want to congratule you on your videos. The advice and general work you show on them helps me a lot in the restaurarion/renovation of my 58 and 60 beetles,both proyects still ongoing.I`m very envious when I see the amount and quality of the replacement parts you can get over your part of the world,than here, in Argentina,you don`t get too many so if you don`t have unlimited resources it is a slow process trying to locate the parts....it is half the time and the effort. Thanks a lot for the inspiration to keep going, in the difficult moments when I get tired or frustated,I watch one of your videos and that generally does the trick! By for now. Oscar

Well we break the doors down for sure, so seals, no scrapers, no felt, window mech comes out, latch comes out etc. We loosen the screws so when the painter needs to take the doors off, he can with ease. You want to do as much as you can so the painter does not have to. This keeps costs down and less headache later.

Chris, You have the best videos on the web when it comes to bug restoration. Hey, how about a video on how to install the One Piece Windows properly, specifically the rubber scrapers and guides. I can't figure it out. Thanks. Evan St. James - Redlands, CA.

Have had the doors off my 65 Bug to replace the hinges. Should I 1)put the doors back on the body before putting the window assembly with channels back in or 2)put the window assembly back in and then put the doors back on the body? Thank you for the helpful videos.

Chris, You said the holes in the door frame were where you’d removed “machine screws”. Then you went to the hardware store and bought flat-head sheet-metal screws (or wood screws). Once you screwed a sheet-metal screw into a threaded machine-screw hole, you bunged it up forever. Didn’t VW originally use round-head machine screws in those locations? What’s the correct replacement screw (dia. & threads/inch)?
@classicvwbugs

Are you referring to the small screws in the vent window area?

Well I got the rivet out of the 67 vent wing and the rivets I have are too thick or too short. I think I'm too old to be doing this anymore.

Is the kit used in this video from Wolfsburgwest. If so is it the one that contains door to body seals, door handle seals, felt channels, vent window seals, inside and outside scrapers, check rod seals, dome light switch seals and screw hole plugs for both doors? I'm doing my 68 soon and just want to be sure that this is the kit I want to restore my door rubber and keep it from leaking

The new vent windows look great! Do you have a source for new vent window frames/posts for a '66 Beetle? I've found new ones for pre '66 Beetles, and post '67, but not for '65-'67. Thanks for all your videos, Chris. They're really helpful.

To answer your question about the location of the holes for the “machine screws”... no, I was not talking about near the vent window. You showed holes, in pairs, recessed in the groove above and behind the roll-up window in the door frame. You said you’d removed “machine screws” but you bought sheet metal screws as replacements. Machine screws have a uniform diameter, and uniform thread pitch, like an 8/32, or 10/24 or an M4. Yes, it’s true that some size of sheet metal screw can be found that will take a bite in a previously tapped hole, but that screws up the machine thread in the hole so that a machine screw cannot be used again. It’s sort of a pet peeve of mine to see a shop take a shortcut like that. You seem so careful about being authentic in other areas, that it surprised me. Maybe sheet metal screws were originally used, and you replaced the old sheet metal screws with new sheet metal screws but mistakenly called them machine screws. I don’t mean to complain. Clearly, you’re a real VW restoration expert and your videos are really helpful. Thanks, Steve H.

So if these are the screws that hold the outside window scraper molding trim in? Then these are just sheet metal screws. There are no threads cut in the door for a machine screw.

G'Day Chris. What is the part called on the vent window, not the seal but the straight part next to the window? I have part of it missing on my aussie built 1964 VW Beetle 1200 and the whistling is driving me nuts lol
@classicvwbugs

The window felt? The one against the window is the felt, the one against the vent window is the vent flap.
