In the 1990 Nintendo World Championship competition, Tetris was the game to beat. The winner, Thor Aackerlund, is still seen by many as the best to have ever played. Today’s Classic Tetris tournaments are played on that same version of Nintendo Tetris, using original NES game systems, controllers, and Tetris cartridges. In 2009, a player named Harry Hong became the first to achieve the highest possible score of 999,999 points. Inspired by this achievement, filmmaker Adam Cornelius produced a short film about Harry called “Max-Out”, and launched a Kickstarter campaign to document the world of competitive Tetris. As word of Adam’s Kickstarter campaign spread, rumors of max-out scores from other Tetris Masters began to surface, threatening the supremacy of Harry’s achievement. With the help of Nintendo World Championship veteran Robin Mihara, Adam searched for all of the Tetris Masters he could find. Jonas Neubauer emerged as an early max-out artist, along with the elusive original champ Thor Aackerlund. The idea of bringing these and other NES Tetris Masters together to compete in a live tournament became an obvious and irresistible proposition which was artfully captured in the 2010 feature length documentary Ecstasy of Order: The Tetris Masters. Under the leadership of producer Vince Clemente, The Classic Tetris World Championship is currently held at the Portland Retro Gaming Expo, an annual event which has hosted the tournament since 2012. Chuck Van Pelt and his organizing committee have built the PRGE into the largest classic gaming expo in the country, drawing around 10,000 attendees. Every year the scores get higher. No spoilers about the ending, and both did incredible, but Kirby's play in particular was a total joy to watch for me. Lots of clever piece placements (place piecements!) that surprised and taught me. And lots of laughing and smiles - reminding me of GreenTea's joyous, expert playstyle. Congrats to both players!

Firstly, this isn't Zone - it's the "classic" mode in Effect which pretty much perfectly emulates NES tetris. But to answer the question, t-spins are worth a lot of points. If I recall, a t-spin triple is worth more than a tetris in guideline games.

This is a faithful recreation of the original NES tetris, and tries to emulate ctwc style competition with same pieces. CTM only uses Tetris roms that are approved for competition using emulators and NES console/ clone consoles

Yeah, I'm curious too. Is it some sort of stigma that Effect isn't "real" tetris? I would really like to see the world championships transition to modern hardware at some point to make the game more accessible to people. It would also be interesting to see a category where the game just stops at level 29, so that DAS players always have a chance at winning.

@@antonliakhovitch8306 the real hassle that top players dont want to deal with is the input latency that comes with tetris effect. In a way this is even less accessible than getting an original setup since getting a good usb nes controller that doesnt eat inputs is impossible. You would need a usb to nes controller setup, and that plus Tetris effect is more expensive than getting a cheap nes clone console and a cartridge. And even you cant get a console, you can use an emulator that has more options for latency than Connected

The highest score in this set was 841k, while the CTM masters almost always have *losing* scores higher than that. $300 is plenty for this tournament
