I've just started leading and I backclipped so many times the other day and had no idea why it kept happening! Makes total sense after this video! Thank you SO much!!

Great video to show how it's NOT done! Do never ever put your finger through the gate with the rope. Absolutely dangerous! Video should be removed...

My first ever lead climb attempt I both Z clipped and back clipped. Thankfully my belayer noticed it and told me to come back down so he can explain some stuff again :D

The third technique is a pretty good way to lose a finger.

thank you this really helped me. I have been able to do it for ages ,(lead climbing)I learnt when I was 4 so I have done many variations of them but it does help in the long run as it will help when I get much higher and older (as I'm 11 at the moment )

Thanks for sharing. Concerning the back clipping issue, very good and informative video. However, a heads up regarding your pinch clipping technique: I'm sure you are aware of it, but it is wise that you try to unlearn the habit of actually pushing your index finger through the gate when pinch clipping. I do see that this isn't really an issue for you as you have very skinny fingers and use a normal sized carabiner, but others seeing this might have larger hands, smaller draw carabiners or even a thicker rope, and may not think about it until something bad happens. I'd recommend that you unlearn this habit, as perhaps you'll one day climbing with other climbing gear and have your finger severely cut or worse. There are lots of videos showing other ways to do it. Be safe and take care.

Pinching a finger a bit in the gate when everything goes well? No problem. Pinching a finger or any part of your hand in the gate as you fall? It's not pretty.

Interesting how many commenters are critiquing the content but have none of their own to post.

Cool video. Clear and simple. Kind of agree with the other comment. I've gotten a little stuck with bad pinching but that's all just down to technique and my position on the wall.

THANK. YOU. For the longest, I've been terrified of leading because each time I would do one (or a couple) back clip and couldn't for the life of me understand what it meant when I was *on* the wall. It's a hard concept to understand when you're tired and getting pumped on an overhang or just a flat wall that seems to go on for eons. Truly appreciate this video!

I was once five clips up when a centre instructor told me I'd backclipped the entire way up. Nothing like that to shit you up and get you to remember not to.

At least you are willing to learn and don`t have a ego about it. There are alot of fools in extreme sports, and one day they pay for it by injury or worse. I have also done foolish things. Climbing realy humbles the mind

Bad technic, high risk of pinching a finger. Some people think they can help, but sorry this video is not good at all.

Technique 2 and 3 is a good way to lose a finger. Your fingers should NEVER go through the gate and if you can't figure out how to do that then you should go back to the practice board and get a consistent technique down. You should probably take this video down and publish a new one with proper technique.
