The direct sales thing is kind of weird if the seller is charging retail. They’ve eliminated the middleman but are still charging retail. That’s absurd. If these manufacturers are going to sell direct they should eliminate the margin that a dealer would add on to their cost. If they did that they’d sell more.

I was lucky enough to shop in the Sam Ash near Time Center with my daughter when we were touring a university for her. She loves bass and was able to play through an authentic bass amp and cab that Megadeath used. The staff was great. She will never forget how happy they made her, and how respectfully they treated her as a young 18-year-old woman. Such a good store...

If going direct forces companies like Gibson to confront their quality control and consistency problems because of returns, that can only be a good thing because nothing else has gotten through to them.

This is my dream. And other companies need to tighten up their rejection policies if they want to keep doing business with Indonesian factories because the stuff coming out of there has been lackluster at best in build quality- right down to the moisture content of the wood. I'm sure the rejection rate is 25-30% but it should be higher tbh.

Gibson won't do that only because I recall Phil McKnight returning a Murphy Lab guitar to the retailer and he asked them about what Gibson would do and they told him "nothing". They'll sell it for a discount to recover their costs.

Sam Ash in Atlanta is closing too. There’s still a few crappy GC stores around the metro area but the one nearest me in Fayetteville Georgia is just plain terrible from top to bottom. I remember Musicians Friend used to be awesome. I couldn’t wait to get their huge catalog to go through. Obviously this was before I had a computer in the mid to late 90’s. I loved dealing with them. Actually, I get calls from a sales rep regularly still, offering me discounts on items and offering help with buying gear. I’m ok buying stuff from them still (not guitars). I hate not having a local guitar store I can go in and try out new models of guitars. Our small local guitar shop only sells used and sometimes some B stock Fender stuff but the owner is a luthier and builds amazing guitars, of which I own one.

The best thing about Guitar Center is that you can go in and play every sub $500 guitar they have (since anything over that amount is locked up) and no one will come and ask you if you need help. Plus the poor selection means you wont be in there very long and you have the rest of your day free to go online to check the guitars at Wildwood.

So, for some reason,a guitar center that's not too far from where I live has all the expensive stuff on the lower racks and aren't locked up. The more affordable stuff is high up. I've been able to play a $2300 Ibanez Prestige,a $2000 PRS and even one of the new Modern Les Paul Studios Gibson has just brought out and I love it. Now, I don't have to bother anyone to try some of the guitars I want to try.

The GC around me has most expensive high end guitars up in the clouds. It makes more sense why ding up an expensive $3000+ guitar? The Squires, Epis, PRS SE, Kramer etc. are 90% sales probably. my last several new guitars I purchased from MF. I have a salesperson I've worked with for years; if it's not right, she takes care of it. My last "new" guitar from Sweetwater looked like a floor model, and the trem arm tension screw was missing; at least it didn't fall off in the case and damage the guitar finish. I won't be buying anything new from SW again. I've actually had great experiences recently with GC, both online and in-store, pleasantly surprised. Another source for guitars I like is ProAudioStar. Couple comments… Reverend Guitars will not go direct to consumer, I’ve asked and they won’t do anything that impacts their dealers. However, since their guitars are outsourced, they do similar procedures as Sweetwater by going through the guitars carefully, fixing what they can and sending back what they can’t. Heritage guitars will not expand their production. Still a one shift operation, M-F. They sell direct, usually custom one offs. You can visit their showroom and buy directly in person. But they put preference on their dealers. (They did for a time offer a trade-in to trade-up deal. Got my H150 that way). Years ago, they cut back their models from a couple dozen to a half a dozen. By limiting themselves, they are paving the way for a sustainable business model.

That is very interesting, as I bought my first 3 Reverend direct from them. All made in the USA and all under $600. This was back in 2004-2006. They were wonderfully made and playable instruments. I also have 2 MIK Reverends and they were much more expensive, but nowhere near the quality.

Sam Ash website is dreadful. They're light years behind the competition. My local Ash never seemed to recover from Covid. The one near me in Cherry Hill NJ is full of cheap used import guitars and a shit ton of Michael Kelly. Their amp selection is mostly solid state Fender and Blackstar with some Marshall Origin mixed in. It's a shame because that store used to be very cool with a vast selection. And yet somehow, that Sam Ash is staying open. Meanwhile, there's a Guitar Center in the same shopping center that has had the same employees for many years and has a huge selection ranging from imports to multiples of each PRS, Gibson, Fender Custom Shop and even multiple Andersons. Easily the best GC I've ever been to.

My local Sam Ash is shutting down but I’ve had multiple poor experiences with them. Awful deals and discounts compared to competitors and when I tried to trade in & sell some gear the sales guys acted like a total ass pretty much trashing my near mint condition guitar and amp and talking down to me. I don’t care if you low ball me but no need to act like a dick while you do it. Even now their closeout sale is only 5%. I know Guitar Center has it’s flaws but my local one has been consistently good and they’ve always taken good care of me in terms of returns, exchanges or repairs if something wasn’t to my liking or had issues and I’ve gotten great discount with them regularly. Plus Guitar Center used is a hidden gem for great deals.

And yes, if you see a piece of gear on sale for a ridiculous price, whip out your card and buy it. I think the big guys selling direct will be a mistake. Basic economic principles and greed involved here. The pandemic created the sales lift for manufacturers. They got greedy on two fonts. One - went into production overdrive like the opportunity would last forever. Result produced too much product. Two - raised prices gouging consumers with their greed. The reality - as the pandemic lingered musicians had less and less opportunities to play out and earn some income, resulting in some needing to part with an instrument to pay their bills. Bottom line - manufacturers have priced themselves out of reach for "working" musicians. If you are then going to make products than only "doctors and lawyers" can afford your market will inevitably shrink. That is where we are today. Imports approaching $2K as a standard is insanity. Realistic option - buy used.

I know things go up in price, but aren't these manufacturers going to extremes? Over the past 3 years, the Fender Strat (Professional II) has increased by a few hundred dollars ($100 this month). The Les Paul Studio was a great guitar for the price but again went up to $1700 last year and is now no longer available. Amps: the same thing. Fender Twin about $1300 3+ years ago. Now $2000. Are musicians making enough money to justify these increases?

With CNC manufacturing, guitars are better quality at lower prices, so it’s not as hard to trust that you could get a good guitar buying online. Used to be you had to try a whole wall full to find the one that had a nice neck pocket and a good fret job. So the woodwork is good on almost all of the solid bodies, but the hardware can be crap if you go too cheap. Oh, and as far as wood figuring, Sweetwater weighs and takes close up pictures of the exact guitar you’ll get. Convenient.

The problem a lot of businesses make is simply cutting. You can't cut your way to profitability, it's not a long term answer. Also, as Sweetwater continues to try to take over the market, they're also driving the small shops out of business. As they keep growing, being run by Private Equity, their service, etc. will suffer. I still say they'll sell to someone else in 5 years ish.
@mcdingus5081
@mcdingus5081 4 ай бұрын
You're probably right. And it will be exactly like what happened to Guitar Center. The private equity firm will straddle them with debt, and you can forget about great customer service. Corporatization of these types of retail companies never goes well because the owners know nothing of their markets, other than the bottom line dollars. They assume that once they are dominating, they will dictate what their customers will do. I just don't think that works very well for markets like this. But the private equity firm won't care- because by the time it all falls apart- they will have unloaded their debt, and they will have sold it off by turning it public- so all of the dumb stock investors will end up losing their shirt on the whole thing. It will probably end up as worthless stock in all of our retirement funds. Yay.

It's so funny to have a channel that is very hyper focused to a specific market that most people don't care about say "categories that don't matter." Irony is back. Not hating to be specific!

I only shop via Musicians Friend/GC because I don’t buy anything new. The used stuff is hit or miss but I’ve gotten some great guitars at very reasonable prices.

Worst guitar I ever bought came from Sweet Water. One of the Fretz was cut off short to the point when you pushed string down it wasn’t even on the fret no more I tried to ferret it and I messed it up now I gotta buy a new neck, Squier, classic vibe, telecaster, left-handed, I have better luck from ZZound

Your the the first person I've heard complain about sweetwater. I have had to return product because it didn't work right or I didn't like it. Sweetwater has always been great.

Should have sent it back. Their customer service is amazing. I would have never tried to fix a fret on a new guitar.

@@muzikjay yeah their company they used to buy stuff you fill out the paperwork online saying you’ll pay once a month they try to get two payments a month out of you and then when you don’t pay it they won’t let you buy anything else. I never had that problem with anyone else, I talked to Sweet Water and it says it’s our bank. It’s not us well your bank sucks.

IMHO, Martin made its biggest mistake of making guitar of less quality than the standard series and branding them under the Martin name. I told the lady my tour guide, in the my youth when you told someone you owned a Martin, it was like wow. I saved my *** off to buy my first one. I aspired to own a D-18 and felt accomplished when I did. The X series and cheaper Martins are a cheapening of the brand. I know it is me being a guitar snob but brand diluting a super premium brand is not a good thing. IMHO

I’ve bought 4 guitars online, 3 were returned, 2 of those 3 were from Sweetwater, just saying. Personally, I’m not a fan of buying online, nor am I a fan of my local music stores closing. Whole thing sucks in my opinion.

Back in 2002, I went to buy a mini-Strat at Mars Music (remember them ?). The showroom price was $99. But the salesman argued with me loudly when I asked for their internet price of $89. I didn't see the point of paying the extra $10 at the store, because I was saving Mars the cost of packaging and shipping, by picking up the guitar in person. Eventually, the salesman called his boss, then reluctantly did the sale for $89.

Boys, we're 5 minutes into this video about great discount sales ànd you've basically hemmed hawed and joshed around, low talked but yet to really say anything.. I'll keep listening see what happens and continue.... So a few minutes later, I guess you're saying that they're getting rid of gear that's not selling or is not high confidence or... Something like that. It was not very specific.

Made me sort of giggle when Baxter said he fast forwarded past the parts of the Oscars that "didnt matter". Gibsons average annual revenue is commonly in the 900 million range. Fender is just higher pushing 1 billion. Google is usually around 300 billion,.LoL The profits for the biggest musical instrument makers is like the payroll and lunch budget for the biggest etch giant and this guy sitting on the SUPER NICHE guitar youtube channel is talking "parts that dont matter" un-ironically LoL. Must be a "red state" thing.

I for one was not impressed with your comments concerning the state of the union. What exactly about it did you disagree with? I will keep in mind what state you are from that shape your opinions. What’s next. Are you guys going to start wearing make America great again hats. What that hat really means is make America Russia and make Trump Putin is that what floats your boat trust me no one needs your guitar store or your channel you’re the one that put it out there that’s not smart business but it is your business to do whatever the hell you want to do. Me I’m a Democrat, loud and proud and I am riding with Biden. Trump says if he doesn’t get reelected, it’s going to be a bloodbath🫴🫴👏👏👏👏😂😂😂😂

If Gibson and fender are going direct and making all the profit, why can’t they have better QC? Hire more people and make sure what goes out is a quality product. Also returns need to be as easy as Amazon. Yes this will cut into their profit but they are making more going direct.
