I live in the woods in Canada. I need leg wraps like that. After the leg wraps, there was a leather tie that was fastened. What was that and what is it’s purpose? This would be good as a longer, slower video with explanations.

@@phoebegraveyard7225 Hi, he's tying his over-knee woolen stockings to the belt at his waist, like garters. These were thought to be worn in place of full trousers, especially during warmer months. Hope that helps!

A little more in-depth please especially about the types of Woolen and linen that you use if you could do a video on creating the clothing and the Woolen blanket / cloak that would be fantastic.

Making a video about the cloak would be quite boring as its a rectangular piece of fabric... but sure, we will give it a try...

Hands on History AS no I didn't mean to make something boring because your videos are not boring for anybody who is interested in learning these kind of things but just making the clothing in and of itself or where to acquire such things would be very nice especially for us United States where things are a lot harder to find especially when it comes to wool and linen but thank you

@@hillbillyheaven9433 I'm in PA and in the process of making an authentic (to the best of my ability) Viking Age kit. I joined a local group of Viking re-enactors and they are steering me in the right direction with all of the info you are asking for. I can PM you on FB and pass on the links to US online stores that carry the linen and wool you would need. Just let me know.

I've been researching clothing from this period for a series of drawings I'm working on and this video showed me some things that I hadn't yet learned. If you guys could do a few more videos about clothing from this period, I would be most appreciative.

I absolutely love your channel! As a Canadian with Scandinavian heritage + a deep interest in history I always feel so joyful after watching an episode... I appreciate the detail, the laughter, wool + linen (pretty much all I wear!!) - I aspire to visit your part of the world and further my intrigue. Thank you from the West coast of Canada!

What type of cord is that on your cloak pin? Sinew? Waxed Hemp or Linen? Interesting how you wrap you winnigas. Did you come up with that yourself, or did you learn it from someone? I actually start at the top, just above the calf muscle and wrap down, going once around the arch of the foot and tucking it in at the ankle. Never comes loose, even during combat training/sparring.

I've been doing a fair bit of thinking about the soft leather shoes reenactors favour as being historically accurate. There's evidence that people used to strap on leather thongs with metal spikes to give them better grip in the ice and mud and everything. But tell me, why wouldn't you wear your sandals over the top of the shoes? That'd make a lot of sense. The metal grips wouldn't go through your soles, thereby transporting the cold to your feet. You'd protect the softer leather in the shoes. The shoes would be left on for indoors, or in summer you'd dispense with them and just wear your sandals. You'd have your felt slippers insude the shoes and that's going to keep your feet warm. So, my question; has anyone tried doing this?

Check out "pattens", a really similar idea. It's like a sandal you'd wear over your shoe to keep the weather off. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Patten_(shoe)

This is a very hard question to answer since there are few complete findings of clothes from the Viking age. But I think the correct answer would be that its a mix. Tunic is made inspired by finding from Norway, hose is made based on a finding from Denmark etc.

Hi, What is the purpose of tying the "stockings" (I don't know the proper term) to the belt?

so they won't slide down...
@forthehonorforge4840
@forthehonorforge4840 6 жыл бұрын
Thank you! This would of course be import since there is no elastic in the stockings as well as tying the string around the leg risks slipping or worse, cutting off blood circulation. Thanks again!

They are called hose, in later periods they become "longer", and longer, until they become pants :)

I thought hose were the pants he had already been wearing under them. Guess I need to look into the terminology more one of these days. :)

You should look for them a bit more, especially if you're reenacter. Me being one, I'm very happy by how they feel. Model based around 15.th C that I wear is kind of "tight" because of better understanding of tailoring (I guess) and they reach a bit above hips (where they are tied to vest) but they are crotchless. I wear linnen "shorts" under it so my range of motion is unlimited but that "stylish" look of 15th C remains.
