On of my favorite books is Girl in Hyacinth Blue. It follows the “life” of a portrait painting backwards. So it starts with the painting and the environment in current day and then travels back in time showing the lives of all the people who have owned it all the way to its creation. It’s a great story.

Since Jenn mentioned pachinko and briefly of the Japanese colonization in Korea, I just wanted to remind everyone to refrain from using the rising sun flag, which remains a popular symbol for Japan (red sun with rays coming out from it). It is like using the Nazi symbol to represent Germany. I've seen so many famous youtubers use the symbol in their thumbnails and videos, and it upsets me to see that harmful symbol being used nonchalantly. (P.s. on a completely different note, the lighting looked so beautiful today! did you film this during the sunset?)

japanese imperialism reached so far and devastated so many asian nations (like my mom's home country) i love japanese pop culture but it leaves a real bad taste in my mouth when people blatantly ignore the attrocities it's government and military has done and proceeds to try to hide to this day.

The book you described reminded me of a show that you can watch on netflix called Mr. Sunshine. It's a K drama that takes place in Korea before Japan's reign. There are many characters with their own individual stories that part take in the grand scheme of the story line. I love that about the writing; each person has a history and the connections between each character create a great story line. It has love, war, and great cinematography.

pachinko is my favorite book! i'm glad you stuck with it and enjoyed it :) a tale for the time being by ruth ozeki is also way up there, and kind of touches on similar themes that you mentioned from pachinko, like the consequences within a multigenerational family, colonialism + history, etc. it follows 2 women -- ruth & nao. ruth, living in america, one day finds a girl's diary (the girl lives in japan), and the story unfolds through ruth reading nao's diary. it flips back and forth between their perspectives, and we learn more about ruth and nao, especially nao's whole story. there's also stuff on time, spiritualism, and death -- overall, it's such a great book!!

Not sure if you listen to a ton of podcasts, but just binged Broken Harts! I think it's still ongoing, but really good. It's a true journalistic story about a couple that adopted 6 children, but semi-mysteriously drove off a cliff to their deaths and how the investigation about this family plays out

My recommendation is "Night" by Elie Wiesel. It's Elie Wiesel's autobiography of his life as a Romanian Jew during WWII. He and his family were sent to concentration camps, and so he writes about what is was like to live in that situation. Though it was incredibly difficult to read (just because of all of the horror that happened), I found it really interesting, because you hear a lot about the Holocaust and how it affected people, but you don't always get to hear directly from the people who suffered. It makes you more sympathetic because you are getting a first-person, personal experience of what it was like to be a young person in such a horrible situation. You will cry! But, I think it's totally worth it.

SKY Castle is a must K drama series it’s so freakin good and unique, unlike anything I’ve ever seen before. It’s about these insanely rich Korean families trying to mold their kids into getting into the best university in Korea. The lengths these families go are just mind-boggling. It’s a critical take on the education system in Korea and the hierarchical ranks in jobs and such but it’s so much more than that. There’s mystery, murders, family drama, and an insane amount of surprises and cliff hangers. Obsessed highly recommended:) luv u ❤️

I have been watching Korean TV show called "SKY CATSLE" and I am so into it these days! I hope you watch it and review it on your favourite video! It's about how manipulative korean parents are about their kids and how the passion for their kid's education can ruin their kids... It's super popular in Korea now and it would be very interesting if you review it with your point of view as a korean american !

Books: Spark Joy by Marie Kondo- this lovely book is about cleaning up, and the psychological effect it can have on your life. It walks you through how to "properly" clean, and there's currently a Netflix show about it! The Last Days of Night by Graham Moore : A legal thriller and mystery, the book follows the life of a young lawyer stuck between Edison and Tesla's famous legal battles. The book is heavily based on historical events, and the end notes are amazing to read since so many little details turn out to be true. I really recommend this one! I finished it in one night!!

Oh my gosh Jenn, you should try watching Ashes of Love! It’s a c-drama on both Netflix and KZbin (me and my sis prefer the YT translation) but anyways it’s basically a big fantasy series based on a book but the reason you need to see it is because the acting and the two main leads’ chemistry is insane. It’s a beautiful story about these immortals basically this girl’s mom gave birth to her and passed away having gone thru so much drama and heartbreak so decided to put a magical pill on her heart that makes her immune to love and not know what is is or feel anything. It’s because it was prophesied that this girl would one day face a love trial that would kill her, and obviously there’s a lot of juicy stuff that happens and yeh it’s pretty amazing! Please watch :) It made me so nostalgic for the old asian c-dramas I used to watch as a kid (I’m viet so english sub reading always my life haha). The music makes me cry even tho I don’t understand it but it just gave me renewed appreciation for how different cultures tell stories.
