When I hear of Tilley hats, I always think of the Ontario zookeeper who had his Tilley hat removed from his head and eaten by an elephant - three times! He’d just wait for it to reappear and then wash it and wear it again. Got to be a good recommendation for them. I think the hat is in the Tilley ‘museum’ collection now since the guy retired.

THANK YOU for sharing!!! I just started oiling down my leather gloves... HUGE DIFFERENCE, No more wet hands and no more stiff gloves. I love how soft the gloves have become. I oil down my leather shoes, never thought to oil down my leather gloves. It was more out of curiosity wondering if it would make a difference. Love my muck boots, wear them all the time when I'm out in the yard, still on my first pair. I get my outside clothes from the 2nd hand store...Amazing Finds and Great Buys! Can never seem to keep a hat on my head, resorted to bandanas but they end up around neck. I use citrus oils like lemon and orange on my skin. Not sure why they work but the bugs don't like me and I don't hate the smell. Learning so much! I want to live in harmony with the land and your channel is teaching me so much for when I do get my raw land I will have the knowledge to apply. My dream is to build a healing center. Shawn, I wear moabs to work. They give great support and cushioning and are the best boots for me as they are light and do not damage my tendons. I walk so far generally that the tread is off, nine months to a year depending upon how busy I am. They will do all year, here in Scotland. I have a 20 year old Gortex Spray Way jacket, which is still great and just makes it around the bump in the middle. It is itself a free replacement for one that dared to leak! Spray Way fleeces to stand alone in autumn or zip in in winter. I wear Dickies workwear as I'm urban and moleskins in winter. T shirts like yours and Aran sweaters my wife knits. Remember, no such thing as bad weather, just inappropriate clothing! Regards Stephen. Oh! Yes. I get my gloves 3 pairs for £20 from Costco. Feel like pig skin. Very good.

Hey Shawn, I've seen you wearing Eddie Bauer stuff in the past. As an avid outdoorsman myself, I find there stuff reasonably durable. But what I like best is their lifetime warranty on all products. They've taken back some stuff I've had for many years that wore out. My only suggestion is to avoid the outlet stores (i.e. Cookstown). The outlet products are inferior, and wont last nearly as long. Thanks for your tips!

Darn Tough socks is in Northfield Vermont, my hometown. Also building a place in Waterbury Vermont as well. Wooden tool handles. My dad taught me to sand the finish off the wooden handles, the finish is just to make them look better in the store and it will give you blisters. Once sanded mix boiled linseed oil and mineral spirits in a 1 to 1 mix. Wipe the handles down once a day for a week, once a week for a month and month for a year then yearly and that handle will last you years if you don't break it. I do it, it seems to work for me and the splinters don't seem occur.

BTW, cannot recommend Darn Tough highly enough. A terrific product and they DO honor their replacement warranty. I don't like taking advantage of it (I mean, the socks did their service and lasted as long as I could ask) but the few times we've sent back socks (we wear them constantly), they've honored it.

I worked outside almost my entire life and while doing so I wore white long sleeve button down shirts and white pants, (not painters pants). I was a plasterer. I wore a white hard hat and white cotton gloves. White reflects the heat mush better than any color of clothing. Yes they did get dirty faster but again the positives out weighed the Negatives. Back in the early days of plastering workers wore black bow ties. A tie was needed to keep the plaster from falling on to your neck when working over your head. I'm not sure why more people don't wear white clothing while working outside?

You should try a steelcap work book in leather. Hubby uses a brand called "steel blue" and they last him years. He works in a coal mine in australia and these boots take him through mud, wading in water, up washplants, and thru oil and all sorts of gross disgustingness LOL As well as having his feet in them for 14hrs a day for 7 days at a time and often in 49C heat. They last yeaaars. Might be worth a try if you can get your hands on a pair.

Have a question: I can well see that area being mostly flat, don’t seem to see any mountains. Here’s the question: which poses more of a challenge, living by a flat-land or by a mountain range? Was up backpacking with a friend, Sven W. at Yosemite National State Park year’s back and it was beyond me, I mean the wildness Of such a place.Touched and untouched areas Drank from a clean stream, bathed in a bathtub made of mountainous rock far from camp and the stars at night into the dusk was a definite disconnect from the mainstream. To be there in winter would be far from my experience. I’ve checked out the dude who has a cabin in The mountainous state of Colorado, but camps around the state in his truck. Aware of the size difference between both Canada & Colorado. One is Jeremiah Johnson country, the other is the Wild West. Shawn’s cabin is unbelievable, by far.

I was wondering about the tick situation up there ever since I subscribed. In my neck of the woods (by the Chesapeake bay) ticks are a constant nuisance. The only effective means of dealing with them that I've found is to wear rubber boots and to hose those boots down with bug repellent before setting foot on anything off the beaten path. Failing to do that will get you one of these little bastards trying to climb you in about 5 minutes. Good to see that you've not had that problem. Looking at the lyme prevalence maps -- they seem to have spread quite a lot in the past decade.
