Rekordbox is notorious for misplacing the beat grid. That was the most cumbersome part of building my initial Rekordbox collection. Adjusting the beat grid, correcting the BPM analysis and adjusting phrasing makes me dread adding to the collection. As for sync, I don't use it. I actually like to beat match on my own. It keeps me more engaged in the mix and definitely helps a night go by faster. Great stuff as always Andrew! For those that haven't purchased the Club Ready DJ School course, I highly recommend it!

Serato isn’t any better than Rekordbox with misaligned beat grids. One would think that with all the advances in technology both Rekordbox and Serato would have this nailed down by now. As far as Mixed In Key, honestly I’m not thrilled with it. It does get the key correct but don’t let it overwrite your Cue points. As far as energy levels, that’s questionable. I have a few tracks that registered a 10, two dozen that registered 9 and hundreds of 8’s & 7’s. The tens aren’t as powerful as the 8’s and 7’s. So I use MIK for the key rather than energy or Cue points. My biggest qualm is is you take the same track one in WAV 1440 kbps and the other in MP3 at 320 kbps you get two different Keys. Common sense tells me that the MIK algorithm has a glitch of sorts.

Traktor also have this problem and I noticed ca 20% of songs in my collection don't sync well, but there is a moment when beat matching skills help - I just move platter until it's matched, so during performance there are few tiny moment when you can actually hear, it's live and there are some small imperfections when matching the phase/beat. I can play without a sync and do everything in old fashion, only when there is no remix deck, step sequencer running, no external instruments plugged, but I got my f/x out of sync and that's a pita, especially for the delay I use quite often, so I use sync a lot and beat mach the 'small drift' by a hand.

Nothing wrong with using sync. I'm DJ'ing for 17 years. I started out with vinyl on crap turntables so I can beatmatch. But now I use sync almost exclusively. I fix all my beatgrids and lock the analysis so I know the locked files' beatgrids are spot-on. Even live drummed tracks get the beatgrid treatment. It changed my DJ'ing positively. Everything is ALWAYS in beat. Now I'm way more creative by throwing in loops and stuff that I know will always follow the beat. You need to know how to beatmatch, but I like sync.

bought my 1210s in 92 and learnt all my mixing skills from listening to and going to see Sasha. Then life decided to kick in but at a rip old age of 52 after hearing a few DJs at a local bar and not being impressed i bought myself a Traktor. while i quickly got back into beat matching i found i could have so much more fun syncing and playing with the two tunes for so much longer ..aslong as you can mix i think you should just have fun.

It took me about 9 months to learnt to beatmatch on my old 1210s in the late 90s. I stopped djing in the early naughties due to getting married and having kids, usual thing. Only recently got back into it in my garden bar/mini nightclub with the old 1210s but added a controller. I can still beatmatch and it is so more fun than just pressing sync. The point is, it is really like riding a bike, once you learn it you don't forget it. Even after 17 years. By the way these videos are so inspirational, keep up the good work pal. 👍👍

I just posted a comment whilst watching the video with the same comparison about manual and automatic cars. It is the best comparison. Just put in the extra work.. just a few weeks at the start, and it becomes second nature. I can't imagine the peril when turning up to a club with unfamiliar gear and there's no sync if you NEED it! You'd want to run away! Your videos are so great and have helped me so much, I'm looking forward to this new series as a new DJ with a basic controller who will one day definitely be wanting more! I mentioned before that I come from a live peformance post rock background using loop pedals and a Roland TR-8 for drums. Playing in time was crucial for my peformances or it sounded INAUDIBLE! so sync turned off just feels natural to me. Sync turned on kinda just feels like a video game, like the equivalent of guitar hero, there's so little left to do because it's all done by the machine. I want to feel the music, feel that perfect moment you get the beats inline and know it's gonna be a sweet transition! Keep this awesome content coming! :) You are a great teacher

I came to the conclusion, that you can be "a good DJ" by just using the volume faders and the "Play" button. Most people wont notice anything off. So the biggest challenge for a DJ is to chose the right tunes in the right order. And that is more of an artistic/psychological skill and less of an technical skill where most yt DJ teachers don't talk much about. Anyways, thanks! And I see this channel is becoming bigger and bigger and I am thinking more and more about purchasing your Teachingvideos :D

Like many other comments, I began on Vinyl back in 84’, Bought my first set of 1200’s in 86’ and slowly mastered the art of beat matching.. Owned my club in Sydney in the late 80’s early 90’s..Moved to Italy and Djayed there in various Clubs for 3 years as well as a few stints in Paris..Lugging Vinyl around was a killer..Came back to Sydney in the late 90’s and djayed sparingly, mainly House parties..decided to go digital around 5 years ago and my back has thanked me ever since..I know how to beat match by ear but I find it more exciting these days to use sync.. I have a controller using the Algoriddim Djay Pro AI software and part of my enjoyment is getting to learn music by creating cue points and editing beat grids so they are always spot on..These days I mainly specialise in early 80’s Funk (which are notorious for beat slipping) and sync generally helps with a smoother set..I don’t intend on Djaying in clubs anymore so the issue of finding myself djaying on equipment I’m not familiar with doesn’t apply to me, not to say that it won’t apply to others starting out.. My advice, learn to master beat matching by ear before using sync..

This video reminded me of my first club gig. I had practiced my ass off with my CDJ 500'S and my DJM 500 till I finally was confident to record and then a submit a demo to a club I was dying to play at. Finally received the call to try out, showed up with all the cds I thought I might use and BAMMM the club only had 1200's and a 19inch Rack mixer (can't remember which one) and a huge bin behind the dj with all the vinyl the club owned. I played the opening 2 hours b4 the resident arrived, thought I blew it, left without talking with anyone , arrived home and a message was waiting for me, I had secured the night and from that point on , I just used the club vinyl and got better week after week....so yeah sync is good when if it's late at night and you don't want to disturb anyone with monitors going but always be prepared to not have a sync button wherever you're booked.

I've moved from a DDJ-400 to 2 1200s and Xone 23 and honestly... mixing with just vinyl is just like nothing else... best feeling ever! Really thinking of getting a DVS system so I can get the best of both worlds...

Personally, I don't use sync other than the odd occasion when I'm playing around on my own and trying new effects and transitions. The main reason I don't use it is because in it's current state, I don't find it as reliable compared to my own ears. Actually, I don't have a problem with people using sync at all and in fact, I see it as the natural progression of DJing and I honestly believe that eventually people who continue beat match by ear will be left behind in the future. Going back to the car analogy, people used to use horses before cars. Then when cars came about, horses were obsolete. Eventually, knowing how to drive a car will become obsolete as technology develops and they can drive themselves, or maybe when the next 'car' becomes the norm. The more you can automate the monotonous parts of DJing, the more freedom you have to concentrate on the actual creative side of it. I don't see beat matching as a creative side of DJing, its a byproduct of the past that we haven't quite let go of yet.

Anyone can sit in a car but to drive it you have to learn ;) I can 100% see how it can help when starting out but to "DJ" you have to be able to do this with EARS :) I still have my old CDJ500's, it still takes skill, back in the day the vinyl gang thought CD = easy! Edited to add, I posted this before watching the whole vid, like that you use the car analogy too!!

I just spent all day playing b2b with a friend on my DDJ-1000, and sync is absolutely useless when using two laptops, plus you can't stack beat grids _and_ you don't have your own cue point to rely on. It was really quite fun to fully have to rely on your ears to mix, you're much more engaged with the music! I wonder though, it looks like the CDJ2000 has no decimal after the BPM, does that mean I would have to quickly learn how to adjust the last bit myself by ear within the 8 bars I've given myself?

SYNC takes all the fun out of DJing. Also you want to be a DJ, not a Jukebox or an iPhone playlist. One thing that can assist you in not using SYNC is using Cue points on the beats, maybe 8 Bars before the first verse. You can set them in Serato or Rekordbox when creating a play list. Temporary Cues can be set on the CDJs.

since 50's last century, the idea of RIDER was introduced, so the band/artist send the technical requirements for the venue they are going to perform/play music. If you go to the venue and you don't check the DJ system - that's problem you will have to deal with, That's why I stick to modular midi controllers, pre-mapped and programmed per my personal style of mixing. I can't imagine playing music from the 'whistle' /usb stick, but I understand the reasons many people do it, you carry it in your pocket and that's it.... but, most people who take care of their music - they use their own setup (Dubfire, Hawtin, CHris Liebing, etc). Also the DJing in 21 century has moved far from 2x1210 plus mixer, to much more complicated setups, when people use drum machines, sequencers, and midi controllers, utlizing technical progress. it's so much fun to ad tb303 and tr909 (not necessary the originals;) and go crazy with detroit techno sound:). Even the hardcore 'oldschool' Djs use several CDjs in their setup, not just 2, so for example Traktor's remix deck idea is the future imho. As per SYNC stigma- try to not sync your setup if you have 5 or 7 sound sources running together in DJ setup:) (drum machine, tb303, synth, plus several decks out of Traktor). Beat matching is a skill you need to know, same like tuning guitar, if you are guitar player, but with technology you can simply support yourself with SYNC solution, although it's good to be able to use platters if it's required

Good call but from running events riders are usually reserved for the DJs with influence, this video is more for people turning up to play a venue with little to no influence, but that being said you're 100% right people should check out the system pre shows and know what they're in for :)

Because I mix dnb predominantly using the bpm slider usually takes far to long when I’m trying to go for things like doubles, switches or triples as I usually have my hotcues set 16 beats before the drop, I know how to beat match because with stuff like house and garage it’s not as quick. But dnb I struggle and have to use sync else I’ll miss the queen points. How do you change the bpm quicker than the bpm slider?

People should be able to use it to get out of tricky situations last minute, but don't rely on it. It takes away the fun of being able to pull it off quickly! I started DJing in 1999 and the was only one way to do it back then and that was Vinyl and turntables no visual no sync! Totally doable and super fun. That being said sync is the now and the future and it was only something many dreamed of back then. I would think just imagine the mixes and tricks I could do if I don’t have to worry about the pitch drifting and babying records constantly to keep things matched. I use sync all the time now and is amazing what it has opened up. It has allowed me to dj like I always wanted with the upmost confidence. Good thing about my staring point is I can show up anywhere and spin on anything. If I had my choice it would be 4 decks with sync enabled like I have at home. Why would I want to make it harder on myself now that the tech makes it so I don’t have to 🤷🏻‍♂️

The only time I EVER use sync is when I went to change the BPM of 2 tracks together in a transition. I can see merits to using sync, but I feel like i'd only be cheating myself if I used it for anything, even when I want to drop the next track 'live' (volume up) I still don't use sync. Then again, I don't DJ to a live audience yet, only to a live stream.

I remember when the new cdjs could display bpm, that considered cheating, are we still stuck on this in 2023? Try running 4 decks without sync, I think the crowd rather prefer it all in sync than one of the tracks slightly drifting out of sync sometimes

Hi mate, really looking forward to this new series! Question about the course: I can already dj fairly well with CDJs and beatmatching and can play across a few genres, is there really a need for me to sign up to your course seeing as I've already learnt how to use decks? Obvs I know you want to promote your product but in your unbiased view is it worth for me to join if I can already play? Cheers

Hey bro do you have any videos on explaining beat matching using cdj screens vs a laptop for waveform on a controller. I am real confused by it as I can’t seem to notice (like a laptop software) you don’t have both song wave forms on the screen on cdj’s ??

Many of the songs I use different bpm's for different parts, somewhere it is only the same bpm for 30 seconds or so... What should I do in situations like those? What I do atm is either the sync, so they automatically sync and will always be the same bpm or do a quick switch away from the song before the bpm changes.
@IanDeVos
@IanDeVos 3 жыл бұрын
In Serato it indeed straightens the BPM (if the beatgrids are set correctly to the real bpm) In Rekordbox, if it's set as the master track, it will keep it's BPM value and pull the other tracks to the changes in BPM. I make my beatgrids go perfectly on every beat even in transition parts where a track slows down or speeds up. This way if a deck is synced to that track, it speeds up/slows down with the transition perfectly. Like in this demo: kzbin.info/www/bejne/jKKndGR_ga14fKM The BPM of the transition track automatically speeds up.

I started djn in 1996. Vinyl. No sync. I just started analyzing my tracks in rekordbox finally this year. Why. Because they load very quickly in my nexus 2 cdjs.. Now... The ONLY reason I use sync is (recently) because the Mains were right ght by my head and there was a delay from what I was hearing in my headphones... So to simplify everything I used sync.... But put me in front of some cdjs w no sync or turntables and I'll mix all night no prob... So if I'm in a situation where it's just a shitty monitoring setup... Where it's delayed really badly then fk it... Sync it is. I can beat match all day. I'm not at all limited u can sit and talk to me throughout my entire set... Don't care. Cool video!!

I recently got the DDJ 800. If the bpms are matched correctly to the first decimal point but not the second in rekordbox, is that close enough to accurately beat match? The only reason I've been using sync is it matches the two bpms correctly to the second decimal while it can be hard to do that manually.
@ClubReadyDJSchool
@ClubReadyDJSchool 3 жыл бұрын
You can reduce the tempo mode to +/- 6 that makes BPM counter more accurate - but agreed sometimes I hit sync quickly to match BPMS that are already close but then line up the beats by ear :)

I’ve been DJing for 30 years and I do know exactly how to beat match by ear ...and today when I do my mixes I need sync only to match the tempo of the tracks , I don’t care about beat grids etc . Is that cheating ?? Nah, its only being smart and spending time doing Creative mixing without wasting time adjusting tempos. 😉

I have seen scratch DJs or turntablists do some impressive stuff on controllers or serato with sync but I think if you simply mix tunes one in to the other especially dance music all roughly in the same BPM range you really should be staying away from it.
@RaquelFoster
@RaquelFoster 3 жыл бұрын
Sync is great - but only for locking the tempo in. You still need to line up the grid. It's awful if you're using Quantize, but Quanitize is always a bad idea (except on the mixer's Beat FX). There are five DJsounds videos with Carl Cox and they're all amazing and he's constantly using sync on all of them. But he's also got the faders open on 3 or 4 decks most of the time. If you're using sync on two decks you're probably using it as a crutch. *The dumb thing about sync is that nobody actually wants it. It's just a hack to deal with not knowing the BPM. If a deck says 130.0 BPM I want to know that it's running at exactly 130.000000 BPM, and I want to know that every other deck which says 130.0 BPM is also running at 130.000000 BPM. The real feature that everybody wants is quantized tempo. I can't believe Pioneer/Denon haven't figured that out.
@RaquelFoster
@RaquelFoster 3 жыл бұрын
Now that I typed that I'm cringing at seeing myself say "sync is great." Sync annoys me. When I'm using Sync to keep 3 or 4 decks lined up I feel like I'm spending more time juggling which one is Master and double-tapping Sync when I load a new track. And after you do that for awhile you feel like you're just terrible. It's like if you're DJ-ing on a controller and you can't mix without staring at the stacked waveform. You're not going to get any better if you can't stop using Sync and stacked waveform displays as a crutch... and now the CDJ-3000 has a built-in stacked waveform...
@IanDeVos
@IanDeVos 3 жыл бұрын
What do you mean by quantised tempo? Pioneer/Rekordbox has great sync and quantisation if your beatgrids are set correctly. It's always on beat everytime if quantise and sync is on. I love it. It even lets me do things like this: kzbin.info/www/bejne/jKKndGR_ga14fKM (The transition track changes bpm automatically)

then why dj at all... theres no real talent in using sync... yes you can do way more tricks and what ever but the basic skill of a professional dj has been lost due to sync... you might as well play a prerecorded cd at your gigs ... just saying... thats the difference between a real dj and a sync dj... I rather have a missed cue once in a while or a slight train reck than soud like im great when im really not. You must take pride in your craft or why do it at all 🤘🏽🤪🤘🏽 plus all the djs who played without sync that sounded terrible... now with sync sound like they put in time... and act like they did... ive seen and heard them all say... I will still sound the same..... but if there honest with themself... they dont. Real Djs embrace technology... they dont abuse it..., Mix by ear !!! 🤘🏽🤪🤘🏽
