Well fuck me right? We decided to ruin some pretty pricey helmets today. Did a drop test from 7 Feet, with a 120 pound Dumbbell, onto our helmets.

arai egg theory really work out so much force were transfer onto the the chin and lower side of the shell that mean less energy is being transfer on the location of the impact so much so that the arai shell actually maintain its shape unlike the under with a cave in on there shell

Arai looked better for sure. The first throw on the Shoei he really gave it a little extra push. The Shoei is also 2 generations older than the shoei x-14. Still think that the Arai is better though.

Thank you guys for going out of your way this far. This video is very helpful for choosing the right helmet. I guess great safety comes with a great price. Thanks again.

Love the test 💯 BUT sorry guys your test failed because you didn't have solid ground and you didn't just let the weight drop on its own
@adaptiveagile4 жыл бұрын
Woah. HJC gonzo. Was considering that model, too. I think the second drop tests were irrelevant because all helmets are designed for the single main impact. The Arai performance was impressive. It seemed like the force was absorbed by the perfectly round shell protecting the head, and transferred to the weakest area well outside the impact zone. Thanks for this great vid!
@Ac22768 Жыл бұрын
They’re not designed for a single main impact. That’s pure misinformation, take a hike.

These helmets were designed to absorb energy instead of allowing that energy to impact your head. Some might argue that they performed as designed. Nice video though. Well done.

Pretty sure if you hit your head with 120lbs of force you aren't walking away from that, no matter what helmet you're wearing... I've lost a few friends who were in motorcycle accidents, fully geared up including helmets... ride safe!!!!

I'm no expert, but I think the fall from around 7 feet equals more than 120 pounds of force.

I'm pretty sure traveling 25 miles per hour falling from a bike and going head first into a car is equal to a 2500 lbs car coming at u at 25mph..these helmets are for skidding across the ground not for hitting your head on objects while skidding..
@akarshvs57743 жыл бұрын
Arai is the best because it spreads the impact on wide area so it is less hurting to us.so I choose arai.

I wonder how well this really tests a helmet for use on the highway. I mean it's true that anything could happen - but most objects - especially the flat pavement and the sheet metal of a car - have way less destructive power than a dumbbell.
@shamoy10005 жыл бұрын
Loved the concept but unless you get your head between a truck bumper and a concrete wall it's not what's really going to happen. Maybe put the helmet on a fence post and hit it with a sledge hammer. That way the helmet will be able to absorb the impact and bounce a little.

what a great video test...! NO fixed marking test NO bullshit..! cos if you are doing 70mph that is what will happened to your head.. I always know and NEVER trust HJC helmets. i have a FG10 "i think" i had it on my head for about 6 months and i knew it was SHIT..! I would thought that the SHOEI would do a better but still took a good hit.. i knew that the ARAI would take it.
@Im_George6 жыл бұрын
1:50 Just like to mention the man in the gray shirt greatly increased the velocity compared to the other guy. Other guy for the most part just let it go. So, that is a lot more force the helmet had to withstand upon first impact. Not saying it wouldn't have a scratch on it, but at least try to make the testing equal.

It wouldn't matter at all any way.. Just falling off your bike at 35 mph and crashing head first into a parked is still far worst than having a 35 pound dumbell thrown down at u from 5 feet... Think about it.. What's worst, a dumbbell or a 2500 lbs car traveling at 35mph into your head..

@dariodipaola84456 жыл бұрын
Get whatever helmet fit's your head shape the best, period. The strongest helmet will not protect your skull properly if there's air gaps or slop anywhere. Arai helmet shells are very egg-like. That's why they look odd but... eggs in nature have a very structural shape. That's why the Arai helmet did the best in this test. My top 3 helmets are: Arai, Shoei, and Bell (the good Bell though, not the cheap $100 Amazon ones). I personally went with the Shoei because it fit me the same as the Arai, but it came it a bit cheaper. I know you shouldn't nickel and dime your head, but a $400 Shoei (IMO) is just as good as a $600 Arai if it fits.

Because in an accident the weight of helmet would break your neck and kill you. No need to mention how comfortable it would be riding with the weight of a sandbag on your shoulders. It must be as strong as possible yet as light as possible. That's why.

This is really bad information, do not take the original comment seriously.
@travispratt632711 ай бұрын
There’s two approaches to helmets and theres always a compromise between the two. One approach is a hard helmet that will take multiple blows and still offer some protection, but transfer a lot of that energy right to your skull. The other is softer helmets which will usually only take the full force of one hit, but deform and absorb that one hit well. I’ve also heard of er doctors advocating for softer helmets because the harder helmets transfer too much energy and lots of injuries with helmets could be mitigated with softer, rather than harder helmets. For more on this people can look up videos/info on the various safety ratings and the controversy around snell offering two different standards but using the same sticker for each. Honestly I trust shoei and arai to have better testing and development, however based on these tests alone it seems like the HJC would actually transfer less energy and be a better helmet for the vast majority of accidents. You want soft, you want it to absorb the impact, you want the helmet to break and use up all that force to snap the shell and deform and crack the foam instead of transferring right to your head. The harder it is, the more it’s the same as just hitting your head on the pavement. Would you rather smack your head against a hard thick piece of plastic on the ground or a thinner tough carbon fiber shell and a bunch of foam that will break and deform and absorb all that energy? That’s why this test is really misleading, imo the HJC won, then the Shoei, then Arai.

why is the arai way better?? it cracked all over the place after one hit . want to see with high speed camera what happened there!

It was a tough pill to swallow, for all of us. The point behind this video is that, you need to spend good money on your helmets. Even the HJC did well, for the given test. thats a lot of weight coming down on it.
@ramonpena30115 жыл бұрын
No helmet will protect you from a direct impact like that. If you are lucky to survive will be in a respirator machine. With no helmet a little scratch or impact can be deadly. Believe it or not those "weak helmets" most likely will save your life in a average accident.
