He has been extra savage this episode. And I love that, because they held someone for months, and then 12 days against her will. 5 broken ribs is no joke, when I bruised my ribs I couldn't get up to go to the toilet without the help of my boyfriend for a week. He did everything for me, because all I could do is lay there in pain. He took me to the hospital when it happened, and didn't believe they were 'just bruised' and when the hospital staff asked if I had been drinking He completely lost his shit. Of course I hadn't otherwise he wouldn't have been driving me there. We only drink together, and were playing pool when I slipped and fell. He insisted that I get help, I took 5 weeks off of work without a doctors note. He took 3 weeks off so that he can help me out of bed when I needed to go to the toilet. Broken ribs are agony, I cried and watched my boyfriend cry every single day. Sophie should not have gone through it, I can't imagine her pain.

A former classmate worked as an au pair in France. The father raped her repeatedly, stole her passport, locked her in a room, beat her and threatened to kill her. She finally was able to escape and ran to the police, who didnt want to get involved. They only helped her because other people in the police station came to her aid and demanded it. Au pair did nothing about it. I'm convinced that they are a human trafficking ring disguised as an organization.

I'm very pleased that I listened to this. I am a house manager/cook/PA, for private families who live on private country estates in the UK. When you apply for these types of live in positions, you are required to supply a DBS report so that the employer may see any crime records that you may have. What is actually needed are DBS reports also from the employer or at the very least, be sure to speak with the previous employee. I held two posts briefly where I was lied to and manipulated during interviews and once I moved in I was attacked by certain members of the household, whilst sleeping, when they were drunk or on drugs, I can never be sure which! So, as a warning, be sure to investigate whomever you may go to work for, as the UK has some very bizarre creepy, wealthy people who will do very crazy and strange things to you. Be warned!!

Please don't mistake plain old evil for "insanity." Sabrina is NOT insane, she's just REALLY, REALLY MEAN. There's a world of difference! I personally struggle with insanity. The number of people I have physically harmed so far is zero, & I'm planning to keep it that way. I try not to emotionally hurt anyone, either, but the complexities of human relationships are such that I'm always hurting people's feelings by accident -- however, I recognize my culpability in this & hold myself accountable. I apologize & try to make amends & if anyone gets so hurt that they no longer want to have anything to do with me, I realize that it's their right to make that choice & I leave them alone forthwith. Sabrina made her bed & she should have to sleep in it -- no matter whether or not she was abused at any point herself, she CHOSE to behave as she did & she's NOT the victim of this story. I also hope she rots in prison, but the woman, though almost entirely not right in the head, is SANE.
@ebihay916

"while Sabrina rots in prison with her ever growing insanity", i like the way you said that, "her ever growing insanity".......yes, unfortunately it appears people like that just get worse exponentially, a constant doubling of her symptoms confined within prison walls would indeed make her worse by the day. And as Adrian said, her not being able to cope with prison life is precisely the point of a prison sentence. Poor Sophie, what suffering, how that must torment her family And of course Sabrina is in no way a victim, but is most definitely insane, she is mad, all of her very own doing

This case reminds me of a friend who worked as an au pair for a rich family of bankers in England. The mother was supposed to pay her salary from the money her husand was giving her for maintaining the house. She was spending them all on lunches and bags. As it was getting worse and worse, my friend wanted to leave as soon as she was paid, but she got too attached to the baby, who started calling her mommy, since his real mom did not pay much attention to him. One time the family went for a long skiing weekend abroad with a private jet and left her in the house. She very soon realised they turned the heating off and locked the room with the regulator. The got mild pneumonia that weeked and that was the last drop. She went on au pairing of another family - Brittish-Indian couple, - and it was also not the nicest experience, but nothing like the first family. Unfortunately, there is little control on the au pair employers.

I've worked as an au pair several times and was shocked by how dysfunctional families can be and how many people want a cheap housemaid/nanny/slave they can control. There needs to be more protection for "au pairs" in all countries. Many people take advantage of young women who have invested time and money to join a family and feel trapped once they are so far from family and home. Sophie sounded like a lovely person, I know her spirit lives on in the people she touched.

Yes, absolutely! So often "helpers" are hired and are expected to do ridiculous amounts of labor, all of which the homeowners are much too lazy to do themselves (when they're even simple tasks), and it all adds up the bigger the place of work is. And despite it all, are expected to work for just about minimum pay, when the amount of labor should be compensated with pay much, much higher. I've worked in janitorial positions in many facilities, and it's utterly absurd how adults will act like children and not clean after themselves. Also very demeaning to be looked down upon as the "cleaning guy" by others who are just slobs themselves. And it's worse when these positions are typically help by persons with disabilities or who are practically almost in their elder years. I swear, I question desperation, dignity, selfish-employers, and how any of it is worth it far too often...

I remember this case . I’ve seen a couple of documentaries about it . Sabrina told mark that she’d had a termination . However when Mark spoke to Sabrina’s brother he said that Sabrina had given birth to a baby boy in Paris. Her brother said that the boy lived with their mother in Paris . Mark has tried to get paternity tests . He said that if it’s his son, he wants to raise him . Sophie went through unspeakable torture . She used to chat to her neighbours . They saw Sophie was extremely thin and looked unhappy but they didn’t try to enquire why . They did nothing ! However that’s how it is in London , especially in Wimbledon .

And the difference is not just "negligible" , either. From a prisoner's POV, the difference between 30 years and "Life - without the possibility of parole" is the difference of doing ones time with a glimmer of hope, to keep you going....to having NONE! It's a psychological blow that criminals like this truly deserve. It's sad that our modern justice systens seem more concerned with what you can prove , and striking deals accordingly...than with the ethical sense of "right & wrong".

What Sabrina and Sam did was EXCEPTIONALLY horrible, but it is the most extreme show of an unfortunate culture that surrounds domestic workers in almost every country. Abuse, missing people, indentured servitude, and modern slavery is far too rampant in homes with live-in hired help. I wish there were third parties that existed that families had to answer to so things like hiding passports or hired help going missing didn’t happen. It’s not a catch all solution but at least it would be something, idk. Seems hopeless sometimes.

they tortured this poor young isolated girl, it is very sad that she had no one to turn on in the vicinity. I am from France and I know a lot about this case, Sophie was very naïve and shy, and she thought that Sabrina could help her to become an actress. At the beginning Sabrina was very nice to her, showering her with gifts, outfits and makeup, but it didn't last and she began to abuse her both mentally and physically for weeks. A seller in a grocery store suspected something because she looked so bad and she lost a lot of weight during this period but he didn't had time to help her. This kind of abuse is more common that we think and in wealthy diplomatic circles, some people bring young girls from abroad to exploit them for all kind of house works, and are using them as modern slaves, some of those girls manage to escape and can be helped by associations.

I got chills hearing this... because a lot of this happened to me at the hands of my boss's wife. As a farmhand and au pair in a rural German village I was overworked, underpaid (the exact same amount, too...), screamed at, isolated and had my food withheld. I lived on what I could scrounge from our chickens and the kindness of their grandpa giving me bread and sweets like some Dickensian child. I never thought she would outright kill me, but if I had died I doubt she would have cared. I even considered suicide several times, which she encouraged. If she hadn't been putting on the perfect wife act for her husband I'm sure it would have been way worse. It's terrifying how bad the situation can get, and I know I was lucky to get out as unscathed as I did. Even without such delusions, it needs to be brought to light just how abusive the au pair industry can be, both here and abroad. They just do not see us as human.

Stay in or live in workers can easily be taken advantaged and abused. Mostly no freedom, no rest days, not enough food and feeling uneasy when the house owner/ employer is around. Especially when one is working for the not so rich family. They can be calculative and stingy.
