I can recall several occasions where I’ve willingly jumped into the back of my Uber vehicle without confirming their identity - it’s a mistake that is made all too easily. Technology has brought amazing things to our lives, but with alongside those new conveniences we must learn new behavioural practises in order to keep ourselves safe. In honour of Samantha Josephson’s life, her parents established the #WhatsMyName foundation which seeks to prevent their daughter’s tragedy from happening again. You can find more information on their website, www.whatsmyname.org Have you had any experience with incorrect Ubers or taxis? What do you do to keep yourself safe? And will this story make you think more critically next time you order an Uber? Please share your thoughts below. - Adrian

Yes one time I called a cab , my friends and I were drinking and ran out of alcohol so we got a ride to liquor store and back. When we pulled back up at home the driver hurried up and turned off the timer that showed the balance but I saw it and he added $5 so I didn’t tip . Had he not lied I would have hooked him up so he screwed his self by being dishonest

Sadly that's how so many of these cases go. Especially when you see if the same people preying on kids or other vulnerable people and just getting away with barely a mark on their record. They get out only to reoffend. Then they pull something like this and people will say "shame we saw this too late" without realizing that they obviously could have prevented it. I know the law can only do so much but we need harsher sentences for sex and assault charges. 8/10 these people move on to bigger more violent crimes especially when they get a small on the wrist. They feel like they can keep doing it because they don't feel harsh consequences and think next time it won't be much of a sentence either.

Crazy to see that he canceled the uber but she didn't see that it was canceled. Usually u get notifications that ur ride was canceled. Doesn't help she was on the phone with her boyfriend and was drinking out late night. This could happen to anyone. I used only have wifi so I would order the Uber than leave the wifi and once the Uber was close I would leave my wifi signal. A few times the Uber drivers would get lost and I would be standing out there for 20 minutes until I figured they canceleed

As a male who is 6 foot 3 and 250 lbs, strong and in good physical condition.... I was working out of town when we got shut down for 4 days. Most of the guys lived too far away to go home or just decided to stay in case we started up suddenly. I had come up on the bus, with no vehicle but I only lived 4 hours away and there was lots of traffic going back and forth. So, I decided to try hitch-hiking home with a $50 bill in my hand to demonstrate that I'd pay the fuel for the trip. After a few hours without any luck, a guy stopped and picked me up. He immediately gave me the creeps but I was desperate for a ride to get home to see my wife and kids. Soon after picking me up, he made a turn and headed the wrong way. I asked where he was going and he said he knew all the truck drivers in town and was sure he could get me a ride with one of them. He then proceeded to blast right through town without stopping and headed out on the highway. I had already planned what I'm going to do to this guy to save myself and I watched him like a hawk. He tried reaching under the front seat a couple times but when he noticed that I was watching, he turned the knobs on the heater controls instead. So I made a plan for how to get a gun away from him and use it on him if he produced one. So I never let his hands out of my sight as I suspected he had some form of weapon under the seat. We got way out of town and I saw a rest area with trucks in it. Right away I said very sternly, Alright you can let me out here...And I looked him straight in the eyes. He seemed taken aback and I had already made plans to grab the steering wheel and crash the truck then find the weapon under the seat and use it on him, if he didn't stop. He reluctantly stopped and let me out and then turned around and headed back to town. Then I'm standing there realizing I was so intent on getting out of the truck, that I let him drive me way out of town and leave me there. After the fact, I realized I should have overpowered the guy while he was driving and grabbed whatever I could find for a weapon and force him to drive me back to town. I was so happy to get out of the truck I never thought about the fact that I'm bigger and stronger than him and no cop on the planet is going to charge me for assaulting him when he drove me way out of town in the opposite direction from where I was going. So desperate to save myself from harm, I never thought of just assaulting him and taking control of the truck. Now I got a taste of how a young girl feels when she is abducted. I only thought sensibly after I was out of danger. One thing for sure, he pulled anything out from under the seat... I'd have immediately killed him with it. Then I realized I should have just grabbed it myself. If it can happen to an oil patch worker who could have knocked this guy out in a fist fight...it can happen to anybody. And this was a small town, nice farm town in northern Canada, not Los Angeles. Think about that, and how quickly it can happen.

I’m from Columbia, attended USC, and spent many a night in Five Points, decades ago. The video is particularly painful because you see so many happy students bouncing around in groups outside the bar - and then there’s the one girl by herself who was targeted so easily. This case is the reason why now, as I take many Ubers every year for business, I never get in without checking the license plate and waiting for the driver to say my name.

On a lighter note, when I was in college, I delivered pizza. I had one of those light up tops on my car advertising the company. One night I was flagged down by a woman on the side of the road. I pulled up to see what was wrong. Before I could say anything, she gave me an address to drive her to. I told her, "Lady this isn't a cab." Her response was, "Oh...well could you take me anyway?" I told her no and to call an actual cab and not get into the first convenient car that passes by.

Rowland also stabbed Josephson in her head with so much force that the knife went through her skull to her brain. And he stabbed her in the carotid, one of two main arteries that carries blood to the head. Many of the wounds, especially those in her right neck and right shoulder, were close together, most likely resulting from being rapidly inflicted stab wounds. Additionally, Josephson suffered a severed hyoid bone, as well as stab wounds to her face, neck, shoulder, torso, back, lung, leg, and feet. The scene when she just jumps in the car so fast makes me so very sad, in an instant theirs lives are changed FOREVER. It’s so bittersweet to see all the young people congregated outside the bar enjoying themselves and being young while she goes off on her own (so confidently) only to be killed. @@mist9798 First of all, yes most people consider life in prison to be a better fate than death. That's why most death row prisoners try to get their sentences reduced to life in prison. Second of all, the problem with life sentences in prison is you can never be sure they are life sentences. There's always a chance some governor will issue a pardon or let them out due to prison over crowding or any number of other reasons. Look what happened with David Gilbert.

I said just up the road and no thank you but he insisted and said it wouldn't cost anything. I didn't think much of it then and I am glad I kept saying no seeing as my bus was only few minutes away I did not care for a free lift... The two main services used in Indonesia is "Grab" and "Gojek", and the safety procedures involves things like, "Checking the license plate before getting in." and "Matching the driver's face to the provided picture" (both of which are made available to you when ordering the ride) and one I read about on Whatsapp through a broadcasted message from a friend is to ask the driver who they are picking up. DO NOT ask "Are you here to pick up_____" but ask "Who are you here to pick up?"
