@@zdiddy-dw9vg This may come as a shock to you, but providing the circumstances to commit murder is still a crime. Idk where you live, but most US states have laws that have determined that you do not have to be the one holding the weapon to be found responsible for murder. Rightfully so.

His parents completely neglected him, if they had actually been caring and attentive caring parents this could have been prevented. I’m not saying he absolutely would have been well adjusted, I can’t say that at all cause I don’t know, but in the very least something could have been done to help him if only his parents cared enough about him. They were terrible individuals who should have never been allowed to be parents.

Update - As of yesterday, his Mother has been found guilty of 4 cases of involuntary manslaughter and faces us to 15 years in prison for each charge. The hearing is set for 9th April. The father faces a seperate trial and has pleaded not guilty. Great video as usual Adrian. Please keep them coming.

I thought our justice system and the law was supposed to be objective, not subjective. I thought lady law was blindfolded so the law would be applied in an unbiased manner. I thought laws were to be written in a way that makes it clear whether they were violated or not. I thought this was purported to be a black or white issue with no grey areas. Everyone who said "not guilty" said the State didn't prove their case (with proof, or evidence). Everyone who said "guilty" started their responses with "I think she should've..." Nevermind that the law allowed them to not lock up the 🔫...."I think she should have locked the 🔫 where he couldn't get it." Nevermind that he seemed like a normal kid with no disciplinary issues, "I think she should've spent more time with him." Nevermind that the school didn't send him home & gave her 48 hours to find a therapist. "I think she should've taken him home immediately after seeing that drawing." So, now it's cool to apply the law based on what you think? Based on your opinion? Based on your feelings? Not based on what the law says & what proof of your guilt was presented in the hearing? WTF?!

@@ThatRedheddStay in school kid. Those who talk up the importance of objective truth are the ones who balk at science and facts, themselves. His parents were criminals, even speaking to their son in a way so as to give him tips on how to avoid the law. You're just one dude on the internet, not in a courtroom, and lacking in the full breadth of context. There's no need to get bent out of shape because his mom got charged -- it only makes it sound like you're insecure about your own beliefs and practices.

@@ThatRedheddThe parents demonstrated criminal negligence and ignored all of the signs that their child was becoming increasingly violent and a threat to both himself and others. They facilitated the commission of the crime by providing the weapon that he used to commit it. That they texted him the day of the shooting "not to do it" means they knew he was capable of it and did nothing to stop him. The truth is that it is entirely legal to hold parents criminally responsible for the crimes their children commit if the parents could have reasonably prevented the crime from occurring. If you don't want that kind of responsibility, then don't have kids.

Hearing the audio of him describing what he’s going to do in such detail, shows one of the main reasons he did this.. for attention. Not only did he want to hurt and destroy, he wanted grave attention from the world (what he couldn’t get from his parents)

many maaaany children are neglected in even worst, but he was the one who chose to hurt others, including animals. i think schools should have more power to go over the parents and collaborate with psychologists, social services, police, etc. We know at least half of the people who are reproducing themselves are not fit to be parents.

I was neglected in some ways at his age by one parent, but not to that extent. It still did damage. Our parents and the way they treat us REALLY impact us down the road, sometimes quicker than we may think. I am not condoning what he did and he should be put in prison and rehabilitated, but I can't truthfully say I don't understand why he did it.

As a mom, it saddened me when he texted "Can you at least text back?" That kid never had a chance. He practically raised and fended for himself. Mentally he was f'd by age 9

I think the problem wasnt the violent games and movies but the prolonged neglect and instability of the home that was supposed to be a safe space for his development, it traumatized him beyond comprehension.

I feel that the stuff he scribbled on his class work was his last cry for help or him giving a warning signal. The teacher saw it and brought it to the parents attention and they ignored it. This case was disturbing! I’m so disgusted by these parents.

When people say US has a mental health crisis, this is one of the stuff they mean. In any other functional societies, he would´ve been sent to a psychiatric ward and get proper treatment. But those who can change don´t care, so the others have to suffer the consequences

It was in fact that school Councilor who made the decision to keep Ethan at school that day... so much info in this pod cast that is either skewed or wrong or just left out. The gun was not bought for his Birthday... it was an early Christmas present and the gun was not just given to Ethan... it was kept in the Parents bedroom... guns were not a new thing in Ethans life and the Parents had bought a .22 handgun for Ethans use at the range...but Ethan wanted the Sig... so much more to the whole story of this family and Ethans mental health...

You can’t just blame his parents, this boy knew he wasn’t going to get help from his parents, he had tried many times and got no were. So he tried with his teachers at school. He drew those drawing in order to get help, but again, he was let down by the school that knew what he was doing and did nothing. They also need to be punished.

@@maryowens8763Healthcare and teachers are supposed to report suspected abuse. Neglect is an abuse that many people seem to overlook, it doesn't leave visible marks on most kids but certainly harms children. The parents are supposed to be the primary defense for their kids. It's really sad to see them fail him, and anyone else that might have sounded an alarm either did not, or was not listened to.

I remember a teacher told me this former student left a note about how bad he wanted to kill everyone in school but he killed himself with a note that said "im better then that" my teacher viewed him as a hero

Oh please. I would have sympathized with Ethan but I don’t have empathy for killers. There are thousands of kids with neglectful parents, and even though that sucks, they don’t usually turn out to be school shooters.

Ethan's parents are absolutely terrible people. Don't have kids if you're not gonna take responsibility for them. They not only failed him - but also everyone else affected by his actions - hence should be locked up alongside him. RIP to the victims.

I was born addicted to opiates and adopted to a family that never forgave me for my addiction. They were horrible people, I grew up broken and joined the military, I got out, and never once thought about doing a similiar action. This child broken as he is, deserves to be punished for a few decades

Update: Ethan was sentenced to life in prison without parole in December and his mother was just found guilty of involuntary manslaughter for her role. She faces up to 15 years in prison and is still being held on bond. James (the father) is expected to go to trial next month on the same charges of involuntary manslaughter that the mother faced.

His parents are indeed a huge contributing factor in why this happened. I actually feel sorry for their son, even though he obviously had the mental factulties to carry this out. The whole thing is just sad. Seeing the faces of the absolutely beautiful children he took from their parents broke my heart...it just broke my heart.

Im not sure I put as much importance on some of the issues he had growing up. I moved every three years my entire life and I was an only child that was ignored by my parents. I have no desire to hurt anyone.

Thier ignorace and lack of parenting pissed me off so much in this particular case which is sad that there is many to begin with.. They ignored so many signs that they personal witnessed and others have pointed out. Then somehow decided it was a good idea to buy him a gun that would be easily assessable to him even though he clearly has mental heath problems. And that the fact they ran away when their child was in custody even to ask him why because they were scared about their own lives. What did they expect the outcome of their child to be when the people rasing him that are supposed to care about him the most don't even show him how love feels.

There's no proof the parents knew he wanted help. No proof he told them. No proof anyone at school informed the parents of any concerns prior to the day of the tragedy. On that day, BOTH parents went to the school to meet w/ their son & school staff. The school psychologist gave them a list of MH providers & 48 hours to make an appointment - which they agreed to do. School staff allowed EC to stay @ school & didn't check his bag, and knew of his drawings, knew he'd been looking up ammo during class, & knew he'd been to the range 2 days prior. If school staff felt EC could remain @school that day, it's obvious that his parents would see nothing wrong with it either.

I honestly feel bad for this kid. He was crying out for help his whole life and his parents ignored him like he was nothing. All of this could have been prevented if those two actually cared about their son. I don't believe he was born evil, his life, loneliness and metal issues made him do it. AFTER seeing the drawing that day, AND finding out the 🔫 was missing from the house, AND after learning of an active sh00ter, THEN she said "EC Don't Do It." I thought this was purported to be a black or white issue with no grey areas. Everyone who said "not guilty" said the State didn't prove their case (with proof, or evidence). Everyone who said "guilty" started their responses with "I think she should've..." Nevermind that the law allowed them to not lock up the 🔫...."I think she should have locked the 🔫 where he couldn't get it." Nevermind that he seemed like a normal kid with no disciplinary issues, "I think she should've spent more time with him." Nevermind that the school didn't send him home & gave her 48 hours to find a therapist. "I think she should've taken him home immediately after seeing that drawing." So, now it's cool to apply the law based on what you think? Based on your opinion? Based on your feelings? Not based on what the law says & what proof of your guilt was presented in the hearing?

Teaching kids to keep their emotions in check I think is one of the most valuable life lessons you can provide as a parent. Yeah, he chose those actions with no remorse. I grew up including a lot of other friends with no parents around ever really, we raised our siblings even. Some of us turned into addicts or alcoholics as a result but never thought about shooting up a school. The only kids who did were abused at home and bullied at school who even considered it but of course never followed thru with. He chose his actions and now has to live the rest of his life with the consequences unfortunately.

I write for a small weekly newspaper in the sticks north of Detroit. I don't cover news in Oxford, but one community I do cover provided mutual aid to Oxford and a sheriff's deputy tearfully shared a story about how one of his fellow officers found Justin Shilling and stayed with him, holding his hand until he was transported to the hospital. “I want his parents to know I held his hand and spoke to him until we could get him removed from the building and to the hospital. I wanted him to know in that moment that he wasn’t alone and that someone was with him,” was what the officer said.

The fact that these parents were aware of their son’s deteriorating mental health and yet still bought him a gun is shocking. It was obvious they didn’t want anything to do with Ethan….it makes me almost wonder if they suspected he would shoot himself home alone one day and they would be rid of him. 😢 I absolutely blame the parents.

It’s been said that there was no love show to him at all. And when he complained about hearing voices he was told to toughen up. The phone recording had me almost in tears. I am just glad he got as smart enough to plead guilty because there’s no way the insanity plea would have worked given that phone recording and insanity pleas are rarely successful too began with.

You also have to take a class and get a license that needs to be renewed every hunting season I believe.

I don't know if Ethan Crumble's criminal behavior had an organic component, but clearly he was mentally ill. His biological parents were worthless. Shame on them to leave the poor kid alone to emotionally waste away like they did. It was fitting that they were charged with a crime. Thank you for your most excellent reporting. It has an organic component. He was born without the brain connections that make us feel love, compassion and empathy. In other words, he was born a sociopath, but if sociopaths are raised in a loving way, they become law abiding citizens. If they , but when they aren't, they become delinquents.

This ones 100% on the parents. I know what its like being cooped up in a room all day, every day while home alone. All while feeling the same feelings he had of abandonment, i lived with my dad and he was the same, never bothered to talk to me, never bought food for the house, wouldn't reply to messages and would randomly go on holidays. It made me feel genuinely crazy like my brain was breaking and i couldn't do anything about it. Being alone with the feelings of hopelessness and abandonment brings out the worst in people, for me i got paranoid that people were judging me 24/7 and that wasn't helped by the fact i have serious insomnia, depression and anxiety. It left me in a state of constantly feeling like one minor convenience or one bad thing happening and i would completely flip off the rails and either end it all or lash out at the wrong people. After a while of that sort of treatment and having those feelings it makes you seriously resentful of practically everything and yourself, and it never ends well unless you can escape it or get any sort of help, which in this case the parents failed to provide and now the victims parents have to live with this negligence as the reason there children were killed. truly a sad case that i can relate to a bit too well, my condolences to the families of all that were lost, may they rest in peace

I didn't realize access to therapy for children is sparse. They expedited way to get help is if your child commits a crime or gets in trouble in school over violence multiple times. It's like the system doesn't want to head off tragedies.

Buying him a 🔫 when they already had 2 of them for many years was not significant. Had they not purchased a 3rd, he still could've gotten a hold of the other 2. Nobody knew the kid had mental health issues. Nobody believed he had ever hallucinated. Everyone thought he was just another sad teenager. What he wrote in his journal can't be taken as fact and his parents had no idea what he was contemplating. The 1 & only time the school asked the parents to come in to discuss concerns, BOTH parents went to meet w/ their son & school staff. The school psychologist gave them a list of MH providers & 48 hours to make an appointment - which they agreed to do. School staff allowed EC to stay @ school & didn't check his bag, and knew of his drawings, knew he'd been looking up ammo during class, & knew he'd been to the range 2 days prior. If school staff felt EC could remain @school that day, it's obvious that his parents would see nothing wrong with it either.

Perfect example of just how much parents can mess up their own child! They didn’t even show him that they valued him. A complete disgrace of parenting! You mentioned that he’d thrown away his life but this young boy didn’t have a life, his parents only gave him existence! God this video hit me harder than any other true crime videos I've watched, Ethan and I had very similar childhoods, my mother wasn't a bad mother but we were foreigners in the US, we didn't know the language and we had no one to turn to, my mother would work 2 to 3 jobs to maintain us so I wouldn't see her up to even 5 days straight, I would cook and clean after myself but I would always be alone. We would always move around trying to find apartments with cheaper rent so I wouldn't really have any friends, after a few years I started to show antisocial behavior and even became a bully at one point. I then moved to a new school, I was listening to metallica in the hallway and a couple kids from a higher grade came to talk to me about music, befriended them and they showed me their love for music and video games, I became a metalhead like them and I became a gamer, I think they saved my life just by being my friends, then I had to move back to my home country, I said my goodbyes and promised to visit when I was older, I never forgot their kindness with me, I became more social and I had a blast in my teens, I still remember them, my wife and I are planning on visiting the US, I'll visit their homes hoping I'll find them to thank them, because after watching this video I think my life would have been a lot different if they hadn't been there for me.

It does sound like your situations were similar, and you don't say if your mum was caring or not but the big difference between your mum and Ethan's is that yours had little choice and probably didn't want to be working every hour under the sun but had to, whereas Ethan's mum and dad not only worked but went out and partied and did lots of stuff in their free time without him.

Living in the Metro Detroit area, hearing about this sent shivers down so many parents backs. His parents failed him, and he decided perform irreversible and horrific actions. It’s still makes many parents worry when taking their kids to school. Prayers to the victims and their families. Also, small error but, Michigan state’s capital is Lansing. I’m a Michigander who doesn’t live too far from Oxford. This whole thing was so tragic. I remember driving through the town not long after the shooting and seeing all of the “Oxford Strong” banners and ribbons. It was really sad, but also frustrating. A lot of the neighborhoods and towns in that area of Michigan are rich and Republican, therefore highly unlikely to advocate for gun control laws or improvements in mental illness. Just feels like nothing will ever change, no lessons will be learned. ETA: Michigan’s capital is Lansing, not Detroit 😉

I'm a Michigan native and live just outside of Oxford. This story really hit close to my gf, who is a teacher in Detroit. Following this incident, she was scared to go to work the next day. We've been following this case closely. Breaks my heart in many ways. My heart aches for the victims. But... my heart also hurts knowing Ethan's upbringing. He didn't deserve that. And his parents... shame on them for how they raised him.

They even encouraged him to "not get caught," when looking up worrying things online. There is a very valid case against them here, and a good lawyer WILL get them to see jail time.

I live in Michigan, about 40 minutes southwest, and his parent's (I think) are the first parents in the US to be arrested and set to go to trial, to be held responsible for Ethan's actions. They were also on the run for a few days, so they couldn't be found and arrested. Disgusting! While Ethan has a public defender, his parents hired a law firm to represent them. Talk about throwing your own child under the bus. I think they plan to start the parents' trial(s) by the end of this year. They're the worst kinds of parents who failed their mentally ill minor child, who then became a teenaged mass serial school shooter. They should have taken him home when they were called to the school. But, they were too disinterested in him to even care. I hope they're found guilty. Great coverage of this awful tragedy.

I've also heard that the US will start seeking to prosecute parents who were negligent to their children's mental health. They'll also press charges on parents who had guns and didn't secure them, or provided guns to their minors as gifts. Lets face it, these kids get armed somehow and it's usually not on their own. It's a step in the right direction, but I think apathy will remain apathy and those sorts of parents will always convince themselves *their* child wouldn't do that, they just have to feed and clothe them long enough until they're gone. Seems like the mindset of Ethan's parents sadly.

I’m not a psych or legal expert and I know this could never be proven, but the vibe I got from this story was that his parents really didn’t want him or to be parents at all and were annoyed (for lack of a better term) by having to be parents so they did what they could to set things up in ‘hopes’ something would happen so he would no longer burden them and did it in a way where they thought could deny wrongdoing.

They probably assumed someone else will handle it, or he'll get rid of himself either by his own hands or aging out. That's kind of what my mother did withy half-brother... And he was released after he 5th+ strike of attempted murder, he also left the state without informing his parole/probation officer... Which I narc'ed because he should never contact me and I want him locked away from people.

As a former student of the school myself who graduated about a year or two before the events that happened it is still heartbreaking and devastating to think about all the damage he caused and how the parents of these kids will never get to hold their babies again

i went to this school everyone is quick to point fingers at the parents, but you forget the school has a MAJOR part too. i remember begging the school for help with the bullying my friends endured that they unfortunately didnt survive (if you get what i mean) in fact i remember them changing MY schedule at one point because I was being picked on and it was a 'disruption' the issue runs so much deeper than everyone can see. it kills me that it took a fucking shooting for any "change" to have happened. the school is a fucking joke (& honestly the community a bit too). im angry & upset & i just hope theres change for all the lives lost im leaving this town the minute i get the chance. it feels like its just a black hole here.

The 1 & only time the school asked the parents to come in to discuss concerns, BOTH parents went to meet w/ their son & school staff. The school psychologist gave them a list of MH providers & 48 hours to make an appointment - which they agreed to do. School staff allowed EC to stay @ school & didn't check his bag, and knew of his drawings, knew he'd been looking up ammo during class, & knew he'd been to the range 2 days prior. If school staff felt EC could remain @school that day, it's obvious that his parents would see nothing wrong with it either.

I honestly wanna see more parents being held accountable for things like this. Too many parents buy kids guns (or buy themselves a gun) and then are shocked when the kid intentionally or accidentally shoots someone. It's negligent and exhausting to see.

This is why the US barely qualifies as a tourist destination. I know it’s way down on my list of places to visit. I’m scared because of things like this case. I can’t get my head around parents giving children guns. And I can’t fathom going to to a super market knowing that customers are carrying guns. Seriously. The US is so messed up. I feel sorry for the good citizens. 😔

Just going to the supermarket was stressful, planning where to park my car, how to navigate unwanted men's advances and HOPING they don't have a gun. It was mentally draining. But now that I'm in Japan it's like a breath of fresh air. I'm a totally different person now.

I work in the mental health system in the county where this horrible incident occurred. Everyone affected by this tragedy was offered crisis intervention services - including the students, the teachers, and any family member who needed to talk. A compounding factor was that schools were still transitioning back to in person teaching after the Covid crisis. The toll on the students and teachers who were coming out of being very isolated at home and going into a situation that was literally deadly really made the recovery difficult.

A girl whose family my my mom cleans for was a senior at Oxford when this happened. She took a semester off before college cuz she was really messed up over what happened, only to be at State for like a month when there was a shooting there. She's 19 & has been in 2 school shootings!

As someone who comes from an abusive and neglectful family I often watch cases like this and wonder what it is that can have us go through similar upbringings and mental health issues but have me turn into a caring person and him into a heartless killer. I have to wonder if there really is something in us at the beginning of life that truly determines which path we go down

As a mental health worker the type of household you grew up in has a lot of drama, conflict and such like. I think the household that this kid grew up in was way worse. As far as his parents are concerned there was nothing there for their son, it was totally cold. Clearly those parents were totally indifferent to their own child. I doubt they even fought as they were out together enjoying themselves. There is love in households with alot of conflict and drama. Often the parents in these households have lots of issues themselves going back to childhood. I do hope you can find peace, God knows we all deserve that.

There's definitely got to be bad wiring in the brain. Like the case if the girls who were into creepypasta stories and Slenderman. My friend and I were really into that stuff at that age too, but never wanted to kill anyone. So I really believe that some have something totally wrong with their brain.

I find it fascinating that Ethan (at least in the end) accepted responsibility and will be in prison for the foreseeable future and his parents skipped their arraignment, ran from the law and pleaded that they did nothing wrong. What Ethan did was horrible, but it sure sounds like he was practically begging for help and his parents were like, "nah"

They weren't informed about the hearing. They were kept in the dark purposely so it would look like they were running when they were simply unable to stay at their home & went to a friend's place. This whole thing has been orchestrated by the DA to bolster their political career.

As i watched Ethan's face during his trial hearing, though with his head down, I sensed that he was gleeful that everything had happened as he had planned. I'm surprised that his parents weren't his first victims and his lack of interest to kill them. Some people were simply born into this world as bad seeds. Despite having good upbringing, given love and attention, they would still make excuses to go down the destructive path and hurt others. Ethan is one of those people.

thank you for covering this, Adrian. as a Michigander, I still feel the Oxford shooting heavily; I know somebody personally affected and I live over 2 hours away. less than a year later, a shooting at Michigan State University shook our state again and left some students with trauma from surviving two shootings within less than 12 months. I hope every person who was negligent in this case never feels peace. his parents even tried to evade police in a hotel room ffs.

I feel the same way. I remember being in class on the day it happened, and constantly refreshing news feeds for updates. I remember that the next day when we went back to school, the halls were empty because so many people skipped out of fear. My highschool was never known as a really safe place (In fact a common phrase was "Only at Anchor Bay" among students), but the shooting truly worsened it. It didn't help that everyone knew someone who knew someone who was at Oxford when it happened. I still remember hearing abt how someone's best friend had died, and how they didn't know what to do with themselves anymore. After everyone had to start coming back, I remember that even the teachers were all shaken up. I remember my graphic arts teacher tearfully pleading with us to be wary of what we say and how we treat others, because she couldn't stand the thought of a single student being hurt. I remember she went over an escape plan with us where we could go out the back doors and down the street and hide at one of her friend's houses, and the fact that she had to make that plan in the first place makes me so upset. There were so many students who struggled to go back to school. So many kids were scared and anxious and had panic attacks, me included. I remember that I started carrying around a blanket, weighted plushie, and fidget toys for anyone who needed it. It doesn't seem like much, but you would not believe the amount of comfort those items could bring. This was the first school shooting that had really hit close to home for any of us, and it just turned everything upside down. And this is what happened to a school that wasn't even related to Oxford. I feel so terrible for those students every day, and I really hope that they all have had therapy to deal with the trauma. I hope our state never has to deal with something like this again, and same goes for the rest of the country. You never know how terrible a tragedy like this is until it happens next door to you.

Nobody knew the kid had mental health issues. Nobody believed he had ever hallucinated. Everyone thought he was just another sad teenager. What he wrote in his journal can't be taken as fact and his parents had no idea what he was contemplating. If school staff felt EC could remain @school that day, it's obvious that his parents would see nothing wrong with it either. ▪︎ If we're now "guilty by association," we're all going to be locked up in no time for _other people's crimes!_ ▪︎ The fair thing to do is add the appropriate charges to the penal code & charge ppl w/ what they _actually did,_ rather than with crimes they didn't commit, "but knew of or should've known of." ▪︎ Jennifer Crumbley was responsible for aspects of her child's behavior & was negligent in this case. She didn't take anyone's life, however. ▪︎ Parents of school sh00ters are typically charged _appropriately,_ with things such as neglect of a child, improper storage of a firearm, or criminal negligence. What the prosecutor charged here will open the floodgates for all kinds of charges to be filed against parents for their children's actions, or anyone DAs decide _should've_ known of a crime & stopped it before it occurred.

My youngest son is 10 years old . I could never leave him home alone ! It’s heartbreaking that Ethan reached out to his parents so many times to no avail . When he sent the text that demons were in the house and she didn’t even respond !!! Wtf ! That was some cold hearted parenting right there , they definitely should be taking some of the consequences . He needed urgent mental health intervention . He must have felt incredibly alone . Not excusing his actions though but it’s just sad all round . I hope the parents of his young victims can find some healing what a tragedy 😢

I met Ethan a handful of times when his mother boarded her horse at the same farm as me. He was always just sort of like an awkward quiet teenager, didn’t say much. I did not know the family outside of horses, but from the very limited interactions I had, never would have guessed he would’ve gone to commit such horrors. Respect and love to the families that he tore apart.

Well, now that complacency has bit them in a way they can't deny. They probably thought he'd just off himself when they bought that gun, not that he'd actually scream out to the world in a way that would bring about such a tragedy.

Every law enforcement agency you can think of Fed & State & County raided the place and we couldn’t even get into the tackrooms or feedrooms until they were searched. That was 8 years ago and I still feel like I can’t wash the stink off. I bet you still feel really weird about the whole thing. At least the horse is in the hands of another, hopefully decent, person. All the best to you and your horses!

That mother's final words to Ethan's parents really says it all. This whole story is just so frustrating, coming from the perspective of a parent myself. Ethan pulled the trigger, but it was his mother and father who killed those poor children. Thank you for another great story, Adrian, your compassion and amazing delivery never fails to impress!
