Had the privilege of meeting Ronny on the set of Crazy Rich Asians in Singapore. I find him really inspiring. The roving piece he did in Chinatown in response to that awful Watter's World segment brought me to tears. Jiayou always Ronny.

When I first watched Watters' piece, I knew it was insulting and stupid, but Chieng's response made me realise how much damage it could do, and how it dismissed the Chinese-American community so flippantly. It was a piece about taking the time to understand what people think, instead of going for the cheapest, easiest joke and doubling down on that. I can't really explain why I found it as moving as I did.

I was at that standup show in Somerville (Boston) after the election. What an ironic (or perfect?) time to have a comedy festival. Ronny made everybody fall over laughing even though it was the Friday after the election results were in and everybody just looked ready to pull their hair out. He had us all at the "WHAT THE F-CK HAPPENED, AMERICA?" and that was it. Everybody's attitude changed and it was probably one of the best stand-up sets I'd ever got to experience. I got to meet him after the show: he's one of the most down-to-earth people I've ever met. He made it seem like everything (no matter how f-ed-up) would be okay. I don't think we'll ever be able to thank him enough.

I'm reading Crazy Rich Asians right now! It's the first book I've read in years because I had a very hard time finding a book to catch my interest (I'm either read it all in one sitting or read twenty pages and then never pick it up again, no in between) and I have to say, it is an amazing book and I'm excited to hear that the movie is so well done!
