I feel like they probably don’t have a lot of spare time between their full time gigs for something like this, but I’d LOVE for Tyson & Colbert to do a full TV series together. Their chemistry is so good, and Tyson is never not enthralling to listen to. Make it a show about space or whatever really, I doesn’t matter, I just want a weekly show with them interacting with each other. I’d pay good money for that.

He actually made a good point. The Apollo spaceships were mostly controlled by gravity alone on their way too the Moon and back, as the engine burns that changed their speed and trajectory only lasted a few minutes at the time.
@Surmoka
@Surmoka 4 жыл бұрын
Yes that was smart reasoning, I'll give him that. But if you have a ship in space, you're not interested in it drifting as gravity wants, you're interested in driving it to where you want to go. So Tyson's argument is still more realistic.
@fromnorway643
@fromnorway643 4 жыл бұрын
@@Surmoka A spaceship can exploit the gravity to take it where it wants to go. Just start the engines at a precisely calculated time, let them burn for a precisely calculated period while pointing in a precisely calculated direction, and the gravity will do the rest. When sending space probes to other planets, they can coast unpowered for months or even years after the launch from Earth, only guided by the gravity of the Sun and the planets.

You don't have to be a great scientist, to be a scientist. Most 'scientists' are just ordinary people, who live our lives in perpetual enjoyment of discovering new things, and trying to figure them out. The scientific method, is what separates us from the suckers who believe in nonsense. Psssst...... wanna buy a bottle of Trump water? How about some Trump steaks? And don't forget to send the billionaire some of your money, because after all, he's a genius with a very good brain, so he knows how to use it better than you do. Note on his "logic" : If a entity can control it's subjects/specimen in mind/ body and generally limits it's contact to be singular. @a.a9021
@a.a9021 4 жыл бұрын
No, he wasn't right. He was using quite immature reasoning. Neil said, "the reason why it's _probably_ not aliens is, its trajectory around the sun was completely determined by gravitational forces." This is a logical statement. He's saying, this object did not behave any differently than any other inanimate object that has entered our solar system, therefore there is no reason to think that it _is_ any different, insofar as being controlled by aliens. If it _had_ behaved differently, then we might hypothesize that some other force was acting on it. So, maybe aliens. But it did not behave differently. What Stephen basically said was, "even if there's no evidence that another force was acting on it, doesn't mean that there wasn't any; maybe we just didn't see it." Yes, that is a possibility. And Neil's initial statement did leave room for that possibility. But it's a bit like saying, "hey, even if there's no evidence that 100 tiny fairies are dancing on your forehead, doesn't mean they aren't there; maybe our human eyes just can't sense them." Okay, sure. But it's up to you to provide evidence, not up to Neil to disprove. So this argument is not the "slam dunk" that Stephen and the audience seemed to think it was. It was actually quite a juvenile argument to make. If that's what Stephen thinks, then why doesn't he apply the same logic to every other mass that enters our solar system? Why are rocks and asteroids just rocks and asteroids, but this thing is a spaceship? The evidence says they behaved no differently. That is what Neil is saying.

@Aaron Richards yes... but if you reference the date of this video... that acceleration had not yet happened. I'm just pointing out that his main argument for why it wasn't aliens was upset.

@sam23696
@sam23696 5 жыл бұрын
Right, but it's not because there wasn't an answer it's because the answer isn't good TV. It's the same as the UFO part, an object is unidentified, therefore an alien civilization did it? An alien race could have thrown the object, but the likelihood that they threw an object that happens to pass by us compared to a natural interstellar passage that has been observed in other solar systems _often_ is extremely low. Plus, would you be that guy that interrupts the hosts joke and viewer reaction with an uninteresting explanattion?
@winviki123
@winviki123 5 жыл бұрын
@@sam23696 you can't compare omuamua with just another UFO. I think that comparison is quite absurd because unlike omuamua,there has been no conclusive evidence as to whether UFOs are really from another solar system which is not ours. Show me one proper studies/research paper that objectively states that UFOs are an interstellar object. Omuamua however has been the first ever object to be detected as an interstellar object. And I think this discovery is embarks a new milestone in space research. And also,I'm not completely sure about whether aliens threw it into our solar system,but also at the same time I can't completely disregard that argument either. And that's why I thought it was a valid question. We can't conclusively tell if it was just a passage ,or that aliens threw it. It's a speculative thing. Do you also realize that we have been sending messages into space so that aliens (if they exist) could decode that message and find us? Read about it. I don't know why you think the likelihood is extremely "low". And plus, do you really think Neil has cared about people while trying to make a point? From watching most of his videos,he has always reached every extent or interrupted just to state and prove a point. But in this case however,Neil couldn't address it and I think that's why he was left speechless.
@sam23696
@sam23696 5 жыл бұрын
@@winviki123 You seem to have belligerently assumed intellectual superiority in your reply, so a discussion with you is probably a waste of time, but I'll humor you anyway. In most of Neil's videos he is on stage at a Q&A or delivering a speech or lecture. In every talk show like this he behaves this way fitting in with the theme of the show, in this case laughing alongside the Hosts performance while the audience clap. I don't doubt the presence of life elsewhere in the Universe, that would be irrational, however I do doubt the theories of alien visitors or any theory regarding nearby alien organisms about as much as I doubt Neil deGrasse Tyson, an _astrophysicist_ , was speechless at any point regarding the topic of astronomy. Now, while I understand the interest regarding the first ever detected interstellar object, you have to understand that interstellar objects are difficult to observe, as most theoretical objects would pass by along the elliptical, and not as a hyperbolic passage. Do not confuse our first observation with rarity, it's likely to occur often enough. My comparison with a standard UFO sighting was inspired mostly by the conversation that immediately followed, perhaps you have forgotten the contents of the video over a month. And the reason I can, and will make that comparison is because the logical assumptions people make regarding alien visitors and the passage of this object and alien visitors are the same, with the latter being to a lesser degree. We have absolutely no evidence _at all_ that alien life exists nearby. We have no data at all to conclude that this object, or any atmospheric UFO, is or was manipulated by an alien species. SETI exists to find that data, and I hold out every hope that they will one day find something. Until then we will have to make a decision, based on the data with the least number of assumptions. Is it an alien spaceship or an alien manipulated object passing by for a reason we don't understand, or is it an interstellar rock with a hyperbolic trajectory that occurred naturally? I can think the likelihood that the former is extremely low based on the lack of evidence of aliens observed throughout astronomy in our history. I would like to know why you think it _isn't_ extremely low. What about our history of observation gives you the impression that ʻOumuamua is more likely then that to be of alien origin?

@@sam23696 "is it an interstellar rock with a hyperbolic trajectory that occurred naturally" The strange thing is that in 2018, astronomers discovered Oumuamua accelerated non-gravitationally. It's just a moderator from the matrix doing some patchwork. Equally possible. Not sure why a civilization that can travel hundreds of light-years would send one probe ship down to look at the ocean and never reappear. If there is life out there, we are far away from anywhere it exists. The resources we have here aren't unique in the universe. So to travel here for some reason besides making contact wouldn't make sense. Also equally possible it's some advanced underwater civilization. It being unknown dosen't automatically mean not from this planet.

Neil deGrasse says that it's not artificial because the object's trajectory is completely controlled by gravitational forces. But aren't voyager 1, 2, Pioneer 10, 11 sent by us into space decades ago completely controlled by gravitational forces? And yet they are artificial and man-made. So, his argument that it's not an alien object flies in the face of reality.

Dr. Tyson is a pure genius. I've admired his work for years. I've loved astronomy my entire life. Since the death of Hawking, though he doesn't have the highest IQ on earth (the highest recorded is Adragon De Mello at 400) I'm still of the opinion that he is the most genius person alive.

Can we take a moment to appreciate the fact that at 3:08 when the pen is thrown, it was caught perfectly on camera and Neil's reaction was like a slow mo dodge with an "am not impressed" look on hahaha

Thats because that kind of footage is very scientifically intriguing but its still not scientic evidence. To make it scientic evidence one would have to exclude every possible alternative explanation that it is a natural or a man made phenomenon. As our knowladge of natural phenomenon and our knowladge of laws of physics is far from complete, there is just no way to say that such events are not natural phenomena. No scientist worth his/ her salt is going to say that this kind of footage is evidence of alien life, although they always wish it to be so.
