From the voice of 'no fun allowed' to 'you boys are all idiots and here's why'. They really made her character a part of the group rather than a stick in the mud. It's only happened a couple times in my life that I actually had a guest I had invited to my birthday party ask if I expected my guests to bring gifts. Each time, I was pretty young, like 13 or 14 years old, so I didn't have really good judgement. I told him that I didn't really care. I was just planning to have a cake, a few guests and a good time, and that was all the thought I put _into_ the matter, so he didn't bring one. None of my other guests had asked, though. They had all brought gifts and he looked like an ass. The following year, I had not learned my lesson. Yet again, when I invited him to my party, he asked if I was expecting gifts, and again, I wasn't. But again, he was the only one who asked. He, however, _had_ learned his lesson. He brought a gift. So here are the lessons: First, if if's _your_ birthday party and _one_ of your guests asks if you're expecting gifts, don't just consider whether _you_ are expecting them; consider whether anyone else has asked. Second, if you're invited to a birthday party, bring some kind of gift. It doesn't have to be fancy. It doesn't have to be expensive. Indeed, it could be a gift someone else previously gave _you_ that you just haven't had a _use_ for. But bring _something._
