Technically account sharing is against the rules, but Jagex has said multiple times that it's not enforced. It's only there to protect them if you lose all your stuff because you let someone else use your account, as they can go "It's against the rules, so we're not giving your stuff back". The anti afk rule did scare me as a child though, and I was very diligent to log out whenever I got up to do something, even if it was only for a couple seconds.

I'd assume similar applies to the no afk rule, if someone comes and drops all your stuff or gets you killed by a mob/pker then they don't want you asking for your stuff back

@@1God1Fury Why would bot users complain about it? They could literally just set a parameter to run when they see a dangerous random event, and how is multi accounting lazy? Someone needs to get off their high horse.

@1God1Fury 6 ай бұрын
@@duewhat9815 By lazy I'm not referring to multi account, what I meant is they just afk on some skill or activity. Random event messes up by forcing people to actually pay attention instead of doing something else. Bot users obviously don't like random events that messes their scripts and btw botting is against the rules.

"Couldn't have two accounts on at once" Yeah and thats why drop trading was a very risky, but doable thing. You'd typically find a low pop world or a area with no real foot traffic and then move your accounts into position. once done the one with the item drops their stuff and logs, then you'd log into the "bank" account and wait till the items appeared for you. Granted some people and myself would sometimes follow people who would randomly walk off to remote areas or to 2nd floor of houses typically no one would really have a reason to, in hopes of intercepting drops. This is how I lost my first red cape.

@@AnhNguyen-hn9vj 99% of minecraft servers have anti-Afk rules where you will be banned for making an AFK machine to avoid their timers. Why do they do it? To stop you from taking up spaces other players could use who actually are there to play. So yes it's exactly what this person is saying. You saying you've never played a game with banned afk is irrelevant.
@ttuurrttlle
@ttuurrttlle Жыл бұрын
The "no afk-ing" rule was 100% Andrew Gower. Back then, he really was into the idea of "the game must be played how I think it should be played". That's all well and good for some things, but if you design your game in a way that basically BEGS them to afk while chopping a tree or fishing, and then you ban them for playing that way then that's awful.
@whompronnie
@whompronnie Жыл бұрын
It is absolutely insane. They could have literally just made you click something every 30 seconds instead of scaring kids with some ridiculous rule. I've been binging these videos, and so much of early Jagex sounds like they had absolutely no idea what they're doing. Take deleting inactive characters. Even in the early 2000s, there's no way a little array of data was taking up enough space to justify scorning your fan base. One of the lame images in their special folder probably took up a thousand player characters worth of data.
@SioxerNikita
@SioxerNikita 5 ай бұрын
@@whompronnie Let's see. A character could likely be around 100-200kb, maybe less, let's just say 50 kb... There is a lot of data to save overall for the charater, and a saved password takes up quite a few bytes, since it was likely hashed. We could even go down to let's say... 10 kb, 10 000 bytes... and it would still scale... Now that is not really a ton... but, now you have 1000 of them at 10kb. Now it is 10 megabytes... The price per GB in 1998, was 56.30$ (on average), and this is not necessarily a one time cost for servers. Each Harddrive you attach also increases your power cost, it complicates your server code further, and it adds more points of failure (You need backups, so it becomes more expensive), and you will need more personnel over time to maintain more the more HDDs you have. Costs add up suddenly... Year by year costs essentially halfed per GB after this, but that would also then be replacing the HDDs, which would not really be cost efficient, which essentially means with a trending down price (halved per year), when does it become viable to start replacing the hardware? It also costs time and effort to replace the hardware, which is significantly more expensive. And the whole point of the larger your database is, the longer it takes to search through it, which costs processing power, etc... so purging inactive characters makes your server run smoother. There is a lot more to it than "Oh, but it doesn't take much space"... Deleting inactive characters is actually something that was INCREDIBLY common back then, even for paid MMOs. It is easy to look at PCs today and conclude something, but I could likely run the entirety of early 2000s Runescape servers on a decent tablet today... Stuff has become significantly more powerful.

My guess is the anti-AFK rule was more of a guideline for player safety than something they were actively banning players over. Back in the day, while you could in theory AFK splash or such for 6 hours, I doubt anyone managed since Random Events were not optional and would surely interrupt you, if not kill you. So they probably encouraged players to log out when leaving the computer to avoid/reduce the number of players who died AFK. Think the Stronghold of Security even has/had some dialog saying as much too.

When I played Classic RS I never considered using another person to transfer stuff to my second account, I simply drop traded in various places. The only times someone walked in on me doing drop-trades was when I thought I was smart trading on the 2nd level of buildings, but I never lost anything substantial. I did find a lot of people drop-trading but never saw anything crazy. The most expensive stuff I saw was full Rune sets, which were expensive back then but not game-changing.

The FAQ of the macroing rule indeed simply says 'don't AFK' but if you read the first paragraph of this rule it said something along the lines of that you're not allowed to circumvent the mechanics that are used to auto log off inactive users. So that implies you're only breaking the rule if you leave the computer while having made sure your character can't log auto log off after 5 minutes of inactivity. So that would have been splashing or what some people did in the past in the desert Bandit Camp where they could also leave for hours while their character stayed online in combat.

In early RS2 it was still difficult to login to multiple accounts at the same time from the same PC. The max my brother and I could do was 2 each per computer. I was young and didn't know much about how the Java client worked, but my dad worked in IT (98 and NT networking for businesses) and it was much easier to build 4 computers per screen with a KVM switch to play 8 accounts each. The lag on DSL back then was extreme but we were fishing lobbies F2P to pay for D Chain and infinity robes on our mains.

if I remember correctly it was not restricted to one account per ip address in RSC, rather per client executable or mac address (which I doubt). It was very common to have 10 people in a computer class at school logged in at the same time in 2002/2003. also trading between your own accounts was done by going somewhere out of sight and dropping the stuff on to the ground and logging out and in. good times...

The 6 hour timer didn't used to be a thing from what I remember and from what I've heard. I'm sure you remember Cursed You, the first person to get 99 construction. He wrote about how he became one of the richest players in the game. What he did was he spam clicked the charge spell (back when there wasn't a cool down period after casting it) to go from 80 magic to 99 in a few hours. He then purposely did not log out so that his hiscores data was not refreshed. This allowed him to appear on the hiscores as having 80 mage, while actually having 99 mage. He then began mage box staking people, where he had a massive advantage against people and won hundreds of millions. He says he kept his account logged in for around a week without logging off so that he could keep doing this. I did something similar to this back in 2014 on old-school, albeit with the 6 hour timer in place. I leveled up my range by about 5 levels in 3 hours, then staked people for the next 3 hours until I hit the 6 hour log out timer. I turned 1m into 20m in those 3 hours.

I remember cleaning out so many sweaty stakers with "minmaxxed" stats getting so mad losing to my weird ass 81att-86-str-83 def or some shit. At least with melee you could just gauge based on combat levels. I even remember encountering a few with slightly worse accounts with the same name but 1 letter slightly off like a zero instead of an O hoping you would accidentally look that one up in Swiftkit or scythe or w/e but you could always tell because even the clients back then could calculate combat level.

So I went to get my mom, panicked, thinking if I left my computer someone else might swoop in and steal my free laptop. Funny enough, my mom almost fell for it too. We never had internet so her understanding of those things was just as limited as mine. It was actually the guy on the computer across from me who mentioned that it wasn't real. Terrible rules, absurd chat filter, always fighting against fan-sites & toolkits, punishing players that play fair based on a smaller group of cheaters. I know he made the game, but a lot of the decisions that he made early on were just unnecessary. It was actually nice in a way when he stepped down and took his focus off of Runescape. I'm sure those rules like AFK training not being allowed were there to promote account security rather than actually being enforced as rulebreaks. It's no longer considered a rulebreak, but the question has been put into the security stronghold instead. And back in 2004-2006, the average player was like 13-14 years old. Nobody really cared about best practices to keep your account from being compromised, but when it's listed as a bannable offense, at least most people will try to do their best to not risk it.

At one point there was no timer, or it was at least longer than 36 hours. I remember back in like 2007 I set up to splash and went to school. Then work and sleep. Checked my progress after getting home from school the next day and was still logged in.

i was banned long ago for AFK training. My monitored died right before school and i thought the computer had died. I was gonna look at it when i got back from school and band practice. i left for school at 6am, computer died at like 5:55, i was splashing air strike in the varrock bank i think, and i got back home at 9pm. I tried to trouble shoot the problem and i could not figure out the problem. it turned on fine, did the awful hdd spin check fine, and i even searched out the debug speaker from my closet (had to clean my closet that weekend because of it, thx HP!). I had a spare monitor that i had JUST bought and thought i'd try that one. it worked fine so i logged back into runescape at like 6pm the next day. banned for afk training. I tried to appeal and they said i did it intentionally because i was clearly in the bank to avoid randoms and they knew i was botting afk splash training. ( i still don't know why you need a bot to afk splash train, it's literally the one thing that does not need a bot to do!) it's fine, i created a new account. AND I BOTTED THAT ONE TILL IP BAN. botted like 40 accounts and even created a small bot farm using a multi login script. it's cool, ive changed IP's numerous times since then. muhahaha lmao

i remember jmod comment on afk training back then. its not splashing, splashing is a mordern thing. back then runescape players are mainly school kids/dorm students and siblings, if one friend plays runescape it is possible everyone in a friend group plays runescape. so playing in group or sharing one computer is common. so jagex didnt want someone to take or drop your item in a grudge or as prank, and there was so many reports back then as someone they know dropped or stole their item, so they had no afk rule.

When the AFK training rule made sense is was in Classic you had to perform a separate click for every action in things like mining and fishing. There was no 'click once and watch your character continue to perform the action', you had to spam click the rock or fishing spot back then. Saying no AFK training was another way to say no using of auto-clickers or other things to perform for you while you weren't at the keyboard.

I splashed longer than 12 hours. I think it was close to 24 hours and never got logged. I started around mid day, went to sleep, woke up and I was still splashing. Didn't finish till close to 12. I was really surprised I was still logged in.

I remember reporting people writing foreign language thinking it was breaking the rule. I was 11 years old, and barely spoke English. I also didn't know how to change attack style, so I was an attack pure for like 2 months. My main source of cash was killing Dark Wizards for their runes and selling it to the general store saving up for the Adamant 2H at Taverly. Saved up further and got full mithrile, one slot was adamant, maybe the legs. Anyway, a guy told me he would make me member so I typed my password with a "7" between each letter. Well, my trust in people stopped there. Of course I was robbed of everything I had. Told my friend I had lost it all, so he told me that his friend also played and they shared their accounts.. So we hacked him, I got gold bars and some wood. Sold it all for 30k (I swear I had items worth of 100k + + but I didn't know it's value). The girl we stole all the items from cried her eyes out "All the chickens we killed together and sold all the feathers from". Lol fucking golden times! Sorry for the block of text, all the memories just came flooding back when I started!

The AFK bandits is more so the go-to methods for actual AFKing back then. Runes were too expensive to go do AFK splashing. This is why Nightmare Zone was also overpowered with early OSRS. You could do this with Rock Crabs and other monsters to certain extend as well.

Here is an odd rule from way back in the day. You were NOT allowed to kill the mods, or attack them. Seems pretty self evident right? But it also included fighting back. Admittedly this was in the era of the jmods just being called Mod ingame. And unless you were one of the very few lucky people, any interaction with them usually resulted in you saying cabbage for awhile. There is a tonne of random "classic era" stuff i remember, some not perfectly i mean i was very young at the time....and stupid oh so stupid. I got pretty high level in a lot of skills due to getting lost between Lumbridge and Falador (kept finding varrock but had no use of that place especially since everything seemed to happen in Falador).

I have a feeling I had my account deleted in one of those waves back when RS 3 came out. When that happened I just quit. My brain didn't understand TOS then, and tbh, Idk how much I'd want to go back to a place like that with rules to that level. Heck, I play FFXIV on Linux, yet still vanilla, but their enforcement against stuff is loose enough now that you have to INTENTIONALLY say something wrong to get banned for it. And when they do, my money walks.

I actually was banned in RuneScape 2 for drop trading from one account to another. Sadly I don't have screenshots but it did happen however they only banned one of my accounts and it was sadly the main account. So when I got banned it was almost right away and they banned the account that got the items.

I actually did receive a 3 day ban for splashing several years ago despite TONS of other players doing it all the time with no issues. And No, I wasn't botting. I bought tons of runs and armor to set up splashing and went to bed and woke up the next day to a 3 day ban. I think it was around 2015 or 2016

Recently I tried to start playing runescape again. I do not have a computer, but luckily it is on mobile. I played for maybe a total of 4 hours getting my woodcutting and firemaking up to 50 and bought a bond so I could do thieving and get cakes to do wintertodt at a low hp. Come back two days later permanently banned for macroing and third party software. Appealed the ban and was denied. Now I will never play again myself.

I was hoping the ad blocking would come up. I used to break that rule all the time as a kid. Some of the ad's were SUPER resource heavy. For my crappy family potato computer the ad's would actually slow down the game so much it was unplayable so I had to right click the ad and zoom in like 10x till it was just white space so the ad would stop eating the ram. Then I also had a program that cleared out the ram, I would just click the button in the taskbar every 10 or so minutes and the game would speed back up. Got to love janky work arounds. How come you didn't bring up "Misuse of jagex features" (Or whatever it was called) Back in the day if you were doing something you didn't think was against the rules and someone told you they reported you you could just report them right back for misuse of jagex features. It was the most childish thing and jagex eventually removed the button because EVERYONE was doing it haha.

The reason jegax was against the AFK xp farming back in 2006 was because of how many players wanted to log on but were unable to due to how many bots were online I remember back in 2006 I had a 3 hour wait time to get into world 2 because there were so many bots online and it was basically like this for every world back in 2006 where you had a wait time before you were fully logged on, (they upgraded their servers from back then so it's not a issue anymore but back then thousands of actual players were unable to access the game until after the wait time was up, infact one time I had to wait 20 hours just to log on back in 2006-2007 bots basically owned the game and there was nothing us normal players were able to do about it besides complain to jegax.

Another interesting thing back in 2004 players were allowed to stay online for up to 14 hours (thus brought in bots which ruined the game but the bots never truly kicked off until the end of 2005)
