Sure sure but it is the fault of the artist if every company @@@@s them? There is a reasonable expectation in any field that requires expertise that rates would be cost of living be it trucking, accounting etc. that certainly was the case in the 80s. To say people are at fault for n out getting out early enough is not really fair. People shouldn’t have to run under the assumption that they won’t make enough to survive if the field is THAT competitive. Your work has value. I do agree that if all of the companies refuse pay cost of living then doing your own thing is the way to go. I tell my students these companies are not looking to hire you anyway so just work on your own stuff and diversify your income but if someone doesn’t come to this conclusion quickly that isn’t their fault per se, it’s the system being broken
