I have a good book on house framing. About 25% of it is on stairs, about 25% is on rafters, and the rest covers everything else. I believe that's pretty indicative! It's nice when you're the framer, the trim guy, and the flooring guy so you can think ahead when building stairs and hopefully avoid a problem months down the road.

Both loathe and love pocket doors. They are great until they are not. My old house had one for the kitchen that broke shortly after buying the house. Got jammed and wouldn’t fully open or close. Cut out most of it with a sawzall, ripped out the trim and boxed in a new finish frame, permanent opening. Fun times.

Back in the 80s this super had this new guy help with the punch out list. In the master bathroom he had to cut a hole in the wall for a recessed medicine cabinet the drywall guys missed. This was one of three show models. It was painted, carpeted and furnished. The guy came and asked me to help. We went to the trailer, looked at the plans. I had him write down the measurements then watched him mark it out on the wall. I gave him my truck keys to get a jab saw and moved on to the next house. I went back to doing trim. He grabbed my sawzall instead. He cut the prettiest pass through hole into walk in closet. I'll bet he didn't make that mistake twice.

I had to replace my deck stairs last summer due to age and wood rot. I initially used the old stringers as templates but because of rot and shrinkage over the years, the templates proved to be incorrect. So had to do some measuring from scratch. Never measured and built stringers before but after some research, I was successful in my measurements. In fact, I did so well, I decided to make a second set of stairs on the opposite side of the deck. That side was not as easy. Completely different height so I took what I learned from the first set and made the second set of stringers. They were off?! WTH? Ya, building steps is kind of a pain. I got it on the second try but seeing professionals struggle makes me feel pretty good about my experience in building steps.

I did a lot of research for what pocket door frame to use in our new home built in 2022. I settled on Cavity Sliders and we're happy we chose them. All aluminum frame that won't warp and ball bearing wheels that move like butter. I did the install and it was easy. We have 96" solid slab doors that are very heavy and the Cavity Sliders shrug the weight of these off. In the home construction business, it's important to know options out there and tell your customers because I doubt most will know. Cavity Sliders is an Australian company that sells in the US.

Most of the pocket doors I've installed have been in 2×6 walls. Take the supplied "studs" and screw them to ANY 2×4 the "track" is 2" so just use regular 2× on each side with the supplied "studs" screwed on the side and voila rigid wall
