Watching you layout stairs reminds me of my Dad laying out railings and stairs and winding stairs in steel. Building them in the shop . Them installing them painted ready to go. With no profit. Just measurements. Jamie reminds me of him. Go Perkins.

This is a fascinating build. Thanks for sharing with us. Having lived in a two story house most of my life and having all my parents, grandparents and great grandparents living into the 90's i have seen them visit and struggle with stairs, particularly winder style stairs with the triangular steps. With lifts now cheap if i had my time over again i would have installed a lift. This would also have helped access when a family member broke an ankle This house build has room for one.
@DavidJames-it8neАй бұрын
I built stairs for my house years ago. By the time I finally got them right, I swore I'd never build another two-story house just because of building stairs. I was so tired of measuring and checking. Good to see even the professionals struggle a little with them.
@larrybulthouse455Ай бұрын
Who said their professionals A professional would not struggle with a simple mathematical equation by measuring height and division. The construction has become a laughing stock just like the USA.
@DavidJames-it8neАй бұрын
@@larrybulthouse455@larrybulthouse455, Thanks for your comment. I do consider them professionals. Even good ole Tom Silvia sometimes struggled to translate what he had in his head into the material he was using the first time. "Professionals" don't always make the struggle visible to the world. These guys do, and I think that brings a genuineness to things, almost a comradery. I've watched them for some time and I can say I've learned to be more patient with my own projects as some things might take a second try. Happy building.

I have a good book on house framing. About 25% of it is on stairs, about 25% is on rafters, and the rest covers everything else. I believe that's pretty indicative! It's nice when you're the framer, the trim guy, and the flooring guy so you can think ahead when building stairs and hopefully avoid a problem months down the road.

So I decided to build my home addition myself instead of using a builder/contractor. And the most valuable lesson I've learned from this show has been, as Erik said, "not to lose my crap when something goes wrong." I'm a high strung person already and I think this one lesson has not only kept me from giving up, but also prevented my marriage from exploding. 😂

Great that the owner showed up to watch your stairway struggle! No matter how understanding, mellow, or cool a person is, having them watch is unnerving. I once had to spend an hour up in an attic with my clipboard figuring out a complex wiring diagram because the owner was in the house, and I couldn't concentrate with him walking around. There was blown-in fiberglass, and it was about 110 up there and I had to wear a Tyvek suit, safety goggles, mask, hat and headlamp and gloves. When I came down I literally peeled off my t-shirt and wrung it out.

Doorknob blocking. What is it, why do it? Figure out where each doorknob will hit the wall. Place a 2x4 sidewards to allow it, the doorknob, to hit the sheetrock, but the blocking would not allow the knob to make a hole.

Both loathe and love pocket doors. They are great until they are not. My old house had one for the kitchen that broke shortly after buying the house. Got jammed and wouldn’t fully open or close. Cut out most of it with a sawzall, ripped out the trim and boxed in a new finish frame, permanent opening. Fun times.
