@90lancaster6 жыл бұрын
There isn't as much of an issue of not seeing things as some people seem to think there is - there is plenty of on-screen info that outright explains quite a lot of it. For example the Fleet assignment in DS9 we just see one Fleet that consisted of a modest number of classes but not all of them - some are missing. Those can be suggested to be attached to one of the other fleets. This makes sense to me - they have their own logistics trail for spare parts and their own home bases and such so clustering them by that makes sense. if you don't see much of something there is likely a simple explanation. They don't all to have been destroyed or never existed in volume - they can simply be assigned elsewhere. Take the Norway Class - it's not like they all disappeared in Universe - they were just not used on DS9 - where as Sabers & Akira were. (I think Steamrunner too - but not much). There was likely a lot of the older ships killed by the Borg off screen and in the Dominion War but if they did eventually pretty much get rid of the Miranda by the 2370's That doesn't mean that all those Ambassadors and some of the other Wolf 359 types might still be around - but something like the Freedom Class just isn't suitable for some mission roles. The reason we don't see things much is due to the pretensions of story telling an availability of assets. We don't see other Conselations because she's seen as Picard's old ship - and also she is seen perhaps as unsuited for outright war roles - but that doesn't mean there isn't a lot of them doing cargo hauling and border duty and minor security work - they are even suited to both those roles with large cargo holds and excellent sensor suits. Likewise the Centaur class - not so much the cargo - but as an interdiction or security craft it's ideal. Oh and speaking of Planetary landing i'd suggest that the Norway Class can land on a planet too - from the shape alone.
@Lennis016 жыл бұрын
While it is clearly of the Miranda Class lineage, it is more than twice the size, with, presumably, twice the crew. Logistics would be a factor in replacing one class with another. There are also benefits to having a larger number of smaller ships over fewer big ones, depending on Starfleet's needs. Obviously, the Mirandas were kept in service over fifty years after this ship would have been introduced, so I don't think replacement even entered Starfleet's calculus.

Even so, legally all they need to do is to provide a freedom of use clause in their copyright license; kind of like GPL, but for derivative content. The logic would be that since you (the creator) derived it from their (the copyright owner) content, they are free to use derivative content... as well as allowing for fan fiction without restrictions.

Also, they could have a wealth of content, that they could produce at a higher level of quality, flooding the fanbase with quality, money-making screentime, while reducing per-hour production costs. We win, and the owners win.

The same reason they slapped down the fan films. They don't want any misconceptions of who holds the keys to the IP and who is the authority when it comes to content creation. It's very bad form to have fans creating content that the fan-base likes more than the content created by the IP holders.

Quite simply what makes this ship looks so good is the thought put behind the looks! When something looks a certain way for a reason, it looks better! I don't know why but it does. Maybe it's because we have a definitive answer whether we like it or not. I definitely love hearing about its faults that way there's an explanation of why we don't see it or haven't seen it. Some of the Wolf 359 Ships were invented far enough in the past as to have been zipping around with the Ambassador. But there is a Teeny problem with them ; which is they tend to use Enterprise D style nacelles which makes the D's Engine template date back to at least the 2340's. Also I would say that the Stargazer is a Lost Era ship too (as might the Centaur be depending on who you listen too) - they certainly look similar era wise with the hull decoration being very similar. Oh and nice job on this it does well of bridging the gap between Miranda and Nebula. It's also a convenient size of ship for roles that the Excelsior class is to small for. If one pushed it back in time even earlier to just after the B was launched on could speculate on Niagra Class Saucers being a basis of a similar ship or other ships with less hull anyway. Same with the Stargazer it seems quite likely that a version of the Constellation exists with only 2 Nacelles or perhaps 3 Nacelles. One can easily image how the ship progression would lay out in a fictional expanded universe with the ones closer to Kirk's era using the A style nacelles and Saucer as a starting point then Niagra style then Ambassador style and then Galaxy precursors into the 2340's that used oval saucers and similar nacelles. I'm fairly comfortable with the idea that the Nebula started development around the same time as the Galaxy but sped ahead and was prototyped earlier. Though I also think the design stage was way longer than the ludicrously short one given for the Galaxy Class, a short time only makes sense if one recontextualises the Galaxy as a kit bash of the ships of the 2340s and of the Nebula - which isn't ideal for a hero ship to be someone taking tech they'd already invented and slapping a secondary hull on it. But if it was bodged together that would explain why the D never worked right and they didn't make many of them - instead of the pride of the fleet she becomes a noble failure.
@jamiegray69316 жыл бұрын
With the D style nacelle template it could just be that the nacelles are refit.
@Riceball016 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure that the Stargazer could be considers a Lost Era ship based on its nacelles. Maybe an early, early Lost Era ship but definitely not from around the same time period as the Ambassador. Both the nacelles and primary hull are very TMP in style, as are its impulse engines. I'd say that the Stargazer was a ship designed late in the TMP era, possibly one of the last ships of the period but still serving decades later.
@90lancaster6 жыл бұрын
@@Riceball01 Yeah she's Lost Era - perhaps the keel was laid down closer to Excelsiors time but you have me wondering now - what was Picard doing immediately prior to the Enterprise D - as it's not like he stepped off the Stargazer and onto the D as They say Wesley was still quite young when his dad died and they imply that that situation was close to or even the end of the mission - so Picard seems to have some missing time. If One guesses that was say 11 years ago then that would put her end of service point somewhere between 2347 & 2353 so she was still operational years after the C disappeared and Ambassadors and Excelsiors are still in service in the 2370s (just). I expect every single Miranda got red-shirted in the Dominion War. So in the 2390's-turn of the Century - you'd likely have very few Excelsiors and Ambassadors left and their roles would be being filled by battle of Sector Zero Zero One ships instead.

This ship would be an amazing centerpiece for a Trek show about civilian life and exploration of the federation and beyond. There are so many Trek stories rooted in military conflicts to last. How about the story of a protagonist that wants to see the galaxy but not serve in Starfleet. You'll need a good ship that's going places especially one that keeps the infrastructure of the colonies and federated planets flowing. You'll meet everybody and anybody on a trip like that and they could take you places the federation couldn't venture. Just bring plenty of latinum and a phaser. You could complete your heroes journey by coming back home in your own ship or die in the belly of a psychic pitcher nebula... thing. Take my money!

I like all these Miranda style ships pretty much and this is quite good. I initially questioned why the flanking nacelles opposed to tucked under, but the landing features and terraforming function makes it sensible to have them out of the way. Lovely machine. Always appreciate nacelles with family lineage showing. I actually prefer the specialized look of the AWAC Phoenix pod. I think the wide nacelles help the balancing of that pod moreso than the Nebula.

I like to believe the reason that we didn't see the Ambassador Generation of ships that was built from 2320 to 2350 in the Dominion War was because Starfleet's shipyards were overwhelmed with reactivating the Refit Generation ships of 2270-2290 and the Excelsior Generation ships of 2290-2320 from the inactive reserve or "mothball" fleet, as well as upgrading the Galaxy Generation ships of 2350-2370 to be more combat effective, and finally with the mass production of the Sovereign Generation of ships of the 2370s, that there just wasn't any available capacity to also upgrade the Ambassador generation ships. So after deeming them unsuitable for combat with the Dominion, they were sent to protect the other borders of the Federation, which even without a major refit, would still provide a credible deterrence for the other opportunistic powers like the Jarada, Sheliak, Tholian, Gorn, Talarian, T'zenkethi, Ferengi, or even Romulan that might wish to take advantage of Starfleet's distraction with the Dominion War. This is my reason why ships of the Ambassador Generation of ships were not seen on the front lines.

One thing bothers me about the story behind this ship. This ship was from the timeline between TOS and TNG yet this class of ship is retired off and turned into freighters and the older, less advanced, and less powerful Excelsior classes are still used by top Starfleet captains. That would be like the U.S. Navy retiring a Nimitz class aircraft carrier and still using a Pre WWII class Aircraft Carrier. As Spock would say, that is not logical. As well as the cheaper throw away design, that is not logical. The Ambassador was not cheap and even had an Enterprise amoung her after the retirement of the Excelsior Enterprise. This ship is a compact version (Miranda to Constitution) of the Ambassador. I see the Miranda, Nebula, and this ship as not cheap but stronger and easier to build of the designs because of the compactness. Love the design though. Awesome!!
@Riceball015 жыл бұрын
The producers definitely made a mistake in reusing so many TMP era ships on TNG, I can understand that during the first season of the show but as the show went on they really should have created more original designs. The funny thing is that for all of the ships from the TMP era we see throughout TNG & DS9, we seldomly see a Connie, not close up at least. The only times we see a Connie is during big battle scenes and even then only in the far off background.

I love this design. I always thought the Miranda class was the best looking ship in Starfleet,,, till today, I loved how the Miranda looked like a cut down aggressive ready for battle version of the Constitution class, I thought it got short shrift in the movies, Love this cut down battle ready lookin version of an Ambassador class ship. It looks even better than the Miranda did, Now here is where I lose half the room, all the pacifists are gonna get their panties in a bunch now. So if you are a socialist spaceman type, look away now. I always thought that Star Fleet would have a dedicated "war" or at least "defence" ship. Would we really as a race set out into space without actual dedicated combat ships? Especially after "ALL" the aggressive races we encountered in the Star Trek universe. Never mind the atmospheric ability and terra forming, cargo re-mod nonsense, And only 85 of them? If the Ambassador Class filled the need for exploration/diplomacy etc. Then this ship with those big cargo bays and tonnes of bunk space could be used to transport troops, used for rescue and evac missions and the like. So it can carry way more torpedoes, so why not a few more forward facing tubes? The phaser strip and super phaser top pylon, imagine a squadron of 3 of these showing on scene with only a small compliment for a crew needed to employ it, a company of marines and 4 small combat ships somewhere between a runabout and Defiant class ship. 3 of these show up and fire 4 small ships out the back that can join in the battle, talk about a force multiplier, if a Klingon warbird can do some much damage, imagine what that combo of federation tech could do to an enemy force? Anyway, that will never happen in any iteration of Trek as all the plot lines revolve around some kinda future world were everyone in the human race is shocked when other races want to do us harm....over and over and over, That all said, love the Consulate class presented here, warts and all. She's a beauty. (Are we still allowed to call ships she?)
