It's a little like when Jeremy Kyle got very bad press because one of their recent guest's death, suddenly it was like everybody hated the show, and it was almost expected to denounce it in some way. It was one of the more highly rated and watched shows on daytime tv and will likely be again if and when it returns. People don't care about the death... if they did then they'd care at least somewhat about the people dying on the streets in their own neighbourhood, or literally anything similar, but they don't... the difference here is that they get to feign caring to get their anger fix, they're basically getting off.

Actually, I'm convinced the people who jump into canceling barely even know about the receiver, I had no intention of looking more into JC's cancellation because I didn't like him in the first place, I liked seeing that little shit get a taste of the real world, BUT I'd get a hard time "canceling" someone I like because I saw them grow and know them and probably understand their decisions, had I watched JC maybe I'd be like "Come on! He's young and he's always struggling to find a bf! Don't judge him for flirting with a bicurious guy!" But nope, I didn't know that nor cared, like most people who jumped into cancelling him.

@j.o30146 ай бұрын
it's especially when people associate being "good" with things that agree with a certain viewpoint. i, myself, am a sensitive snowflake leftist but a lot of these kids on twitter definitely have not experienced enough life to determine that not knowing what to say and even what to believe will not make any "good" person become "bad." it almost calls for being safe in how we express ourselves and not saying exactly how we feel so that no one ever gets offended and/or invalidated. i do feel for them though. most of them likely find their validation from the online community so (especially someone like Contra who they likely look up to) expressing an opinion that can be in any way understood as invalidating will lead them to spiral. we definitely need a group therapy session after this lol
@klockenberg22994 ай бұрын
I agree with how a single "good" action can't make a "bad" person "good", but what's true is that indeed, a single "bad" action don't make a "good" person "bad", after all it means their good far outweigh the bad, and it's unknown if the bad is just a fake/accusement made by those who dislike them to vilify them if they rub them the wrong way.

Back in 2015, I had a fairly popular blog. I wrote stupid porn scenarios and poetry and for SOME god awful reason this caused teens to reach out to me about their problems. And the issue was that I cared. I cared a LOT about protecting these kids. If anyone came to me in crisis, I would give them steps to make a burner skype account and try to help - sometimes this involved teaching them how to find local health resources, work through scary social issues, or just talk about whatever they wanted until 6am and they safely got through the night - then I'd immediately head out to work at my shitty cafe job directly afterwards. I like to think I saved a lot of kids. I can't count how many times one of these kids would reach out later and say something like "it's been six months since we talked. I'm still here." Or "things DID get better. I almost didn't get to see it." I only ever "lost" one kid. She was a stranger from scottland who reached out to me on my personal skype. She was the first kid to ask for a video call, and I obliged. The way she was typing made me nervous. She was already overdosed and dying in front of me. I stayed calm and talked with her while my boyfriend furiously researched in the background how we contact poison control in Scotland - hell, how we could even send help to the right place. She didn't cooperate. She was committed. The last thing she said was "I'm glad I don't have to die alone. I'm glad you were nice." It damn-near broke me. So now, DRAMA. This one lady (she was twenty six, I was twenty one. Idk) was pretty vocal about her disdain for my "self-righteous goody-two-shoes fakeness" or whatever. She heard from someone about my literal, current truama of watching a child die and then .. used it. She started a rumor that I purposely talked that girl into committing suicide. That rumor spread into this concept that I'd done this MANY times. People who I previously helped were now going "oh my god that could have been me I was one of the lucky ones" Once the DOXing and death threats started, I deleted everything. Just went totally nuclear. Maybe that looks like an admission of guilt, but at the time I feared that maybe what I was doing was well and truly dangerous to these kids, and it was the only responsible thing to do. Haven't really done anything online since. Best decision of my life to delete my blog and all my social media, though. Massive detox I tell yeah

Ever hear the story of the girl and the starfish? The right thing to do is often grueling, pointless, thankless, and endless, but hey, it still matters. A lot of people are better off because of what you did, and even if they want to vilify you and lie about you, you still did the right thing. They might condemn you, but the truth is between you and the universe, and words and hate can never stand between that relationship.

It’s scary how similar cancelling is to bullying. I was bullied and ostracised a lot in school because I was on the spectrum (although no one knew at the time), and a lot of what you said in this video hit home to me. I’d be fairly well-liked, then I’d make a slip-up and immediately be seen as the enemy. I was then seen as an evil pyschopath, and any attempt at apology, niceness or learning whatever social rule I’d broken got twisted into evidence of my manipulativeness. It’s a viscious cycle, that in my earnest attempts to rectify whatever wrongdoings I had supposedly done ended with my mental health being so badly damaged I became the sterotypical “I’m sorry you probably hate me” suicidal person - i.e the poster child for “evil manipulative people”. Nobody wins. All I ever wanted was someone to take me aside and gently explain where I went wrong.

I am also a neuroatypical person, and I actually had to turn off this video the first time I watched it because I was, at the time, being bullied on a whole new level. What Natalie said spoke to me so much it brought back a flood of terrible words that had been said to me. I really related to when she talked about trying to explain yourself only for it to escalate further. When you are bullied (or cancelled), nobody is going to give you the benefit of the doubt. Even your most innocuous statement will be vilified. I'm glad I am in a stronger place and could finish the video. It was quite therapeutic to know even people I admire go through it. I hope you are also doing better, and I know what it's like to be bullied and not capable of "reading the room", but it's important to remember that the people who bullied you weren't criticizing you because they had no concern for your well-being, and they didn't want to help you. They wanted to hurt you, so try not to let the things they said or did destroy you going forward.

Ugh, yes. I’ve had this happen in romantic relationships a lot. I’m lately starting to understand that I’m probably undiagnosed autistic and honestly a lot of things makes so much sense now. Every time I dated a woman and expressed any sort of frustration, displeasure or hurt by something she said or did or even if I just voiced my insecurities and fears, it was always seen as me being manipulative. My genuine feelings and behaviours were always twisted into “Oh you’re trying to make me feel bad.” which quickly escalated into “You’re a manipulator.” and I never understood where it was coming from and for several years I even believed that I’m manipulative, because surely I have to be - basically all women I’ve been with said so.

As a “generation Jones” boomer, I had to deal with 2nd wave feminism. I joined a feminist art group, because I felt I belonged, until I heard them trashing their mothers for working as secretaries. This was in the late 70s, and women still didn;’t have much of a choice career-wise. I finally realized that feminism as it was at that time benefitted primarily middle to upper class white women. I stood up to them and their cluelessness, and was shunned by most. As an artist, it did affect the support I received from the feminist art community. The difference was that I was trashed in the analog world. But I think it consistently affects my ability to exhibit, when I call out the TERFs in the art community. Oh fucking well

Thank you for noticing that! It's very important to draw that distinction! I have a non-binary sibling. I love them to death! But I've given them a lot of grief over a period of months because I did not understand for the life of me why my amazing younger sister suddenly wasn't my sister anymore, why I had to change the way I addressed them and why they suddenly presented in a very different way. It's just tough for people who aren't familiar with all the intricacies of "the movement" to understand a lot of these things. They're not yet part of mainstream society! Luckily, my sibling was able to handle my ignorance, we talked it out (multiple times) and I'm finally in a place where I can accept them as they are. Non-binary. To equate my ignorance on the topic with hatred is not only ridiculous, but could have actually ruined our relationship had my sibling done that.

I am doing the essentialism thing to myself - if I make a mistake I have come to believe that I am a flawed and bad person because of it. Because that is how I see other people react on mistakes made by celebrities. I think it is important that we reconsider what effect cancelling has on the psyche of ordinary people as well, and that doesn't mean that we should stop holding anyone accountable, but perhaps we need to figure out a better and healthier way, not just for celebrities sake but for our own sake as well.

I realized this when I saw someone dogpiling a person who was a passenger in an uber.The uber driver made a video about something that the passenger was talking about on the phone in their car. This conversation wasn't in the video. The driver was hearing a one sided conversation and the video was just their version of the conversation as they heard it with a photo of the passenger. Soon enough they had found this passenger and were trying to get them fired. For a second hand version of a one sided conversation (which wasnt even that descriptive or damning).At that point I had to really step back and think 'if I decide to be apart of this,it is only a matter of time before its me'

Been scary for a few years, I think - there have been quite a few hate-mob "cancel" examples, Natalie didn't really touch a lot of them. I've watched dozens of businesses get raided on Yelp based on a single Reddit post, and I've seen several "regular" people driven to suicide because of it, not just the one Natalie lists. Alec Holowka is a recent example that really hit home for me because he was the creator of my favorite game. The mob drove him to kill himself, too, and that was months ago and barely made the news. One anonymous person make one single post in a high-traffic place. That's al it takes. Make a post that makes it seem like someone else is an awful human being, and it won't matter if that person is actually an awful human being, because the mob is just bored and looking for something to break and set on fire.

It's especially sad when cancel culture starts eating their own (the marginalized people they allegedly care about).
@sub-harmonik5 жыл бұрын
@@sleepingdogpro I think in the case of Holowka, it was justified for Zoe Quinn to tell her story. From what I've heard Alec had big mental health issues and the claims she made were verified by many close to him. That doesn't mean that it was justified for the mob to go after someone with mental health issues that went to therapy and apologized for his abuse. However, at some point there are degrees to which people are responsible for the mob when they make an allegation of abuse (just as people are responsible in degrees to which they make transphobic statements that end up resulting in violence towards trans people). How much responsibility should individuals have for other people using their speech/ideas as justification for violence/harassment? At any rate, people shouldn't be responsible for a mob when they make an allegation of abuse imo, so I think there being a "cancel" mob actually prevents calls for an individual's accountability at some level and can make the victim more hesitant to make a public claim of abuse..

Certain leftists and "leftists" that spend more time online than with human beings in the real world need to realize a lot of things, most especially that not everything they hate is "problematic" and people are allowed to like things they hate. I think twitter’s propensity to W O R S H I P any public figure that Hasn’t Fucked Up Yet (though it’s always a matter of time) is a big part of what amplifies folks’ outrage when things do get even remotely complicated. Keep in mind that at the time Natalie agreed to cast him she had no idea what his present-day views would become; & it sounds like she didn't really know what his views at the time were, much less the extent of them. It's important to remember that her choice to have him quote a 10-sec voiceover in a 48-min video was made in the context of what she knew back then not on what we all know now. AND Natalie's opinion has since changed once she knew more. During this video Natalie was trying her best based on what she knew at the time & she didn't want to be the one leading the pitchforks at someone else after what she'd just been through. As described in this video, it sounds like the casting choice was suggested by a work colleague she trusted & didn't think to further research his opinions before approving the decision, since she was probably focused on all the other tasks that needed to be coordinated in order for her video Opulence to happen. But again, after she learned more because he made more of his opinions known publicly &/or his opinions changed after the video, she changed both her position & her opinions of her past actions & mistakes based on what she knew at the time. Think of the Maya Angelou quote: "Do the best you can until you know better. Then when you know better, do better." I think Natalie always thought she was doing the best thing to handle the situation at the time based on what she knew at the time. I really respect that Natalie is willing to change her mind & learn from her mistakes.

Travesty. And then I watched a video by TheHealthyGamerGG in which you told Dr K about your transition process of thinking you were nonbinary on the way to realising you are a woman. And this totally fucking calmed me down. You helped me realise that I could just... change things later if I did them wrong. There's no pressure. My trans journey is mine and it's nobody else's fucking business. And stubborn cis people may hate on me for it. And stubborn trans people may also say that I "think that nonbinary is just a phase on the way to becoming binary trans!!!" But I'll know otherwise. I can deal with the hate. I don't owe any of those people anything. And in turn, that idea led to me realising that I don't owe anyone androgyny either, or femininity, or using the "correct pronouns", even that the only type of "correctness" associated with pronouns is whether they help expressing oneself in the way one wishes to express oneself. In other words, Natalie, coming across your content for the first time was pivotal in my questioning and helped lead me to being the bad bitch nonbinary they/she SJW I am today! (I don't do a lot of activism yet and I am definitely not a bad bitch - I am working on both of these tho lol, also on becoming one of Ryan's transgender furry anarchist friends in antifa ;3) And in the year since then that I have been slowly eating my way through your past videos, I have never felt like you hold any judgement or contempt against nonbinary people. I saw a post on tumblr a while ago that basically said, "when the bar is so low for calling someone a predator, it makes it really easy for actual predators to fly under the radar." So many people get "canceled" so often and for such minor things that terms like "predator" and "transphobe" and suchlike are watered down to the point of being practically meaningless, at least in social media discourse. And nobody has the time or energy to look into every accusation, so you end up with a lot of people who hear that someone is problematic and just think, "oh, I wonder what stupid thing people are mad about this time" instead of "oh, I should avoid that person's content in the future" or whatever. So cancel culture basically creates a broader culture where accusations aren't taken seriously, which is, incidentally, the exact problem that cancel culture was originally a response to.

The Republican Party, as a whole, currently uses white grievance and white supremacy as fuel for elections. So, even if an individual Republican isn't anti-Semitic themselves, they are part of a party that not only allows such views to flourish but actively encourages them. How often have you seen a "conservative" talking about George Soros? More importantly, when their particular leader can't be bothered to denounce the people chanting "Jews will not replace us," and the party members themselves don't immediately demand his resignation... Do you really think any of them have any kind of moral ground to stand on? And keep in mind, this is the same party that is currently opposing his impeachment, despite federal crimes. Like, if the whole Charlottesville thing had really bothered any of them but they felt it wasn't enough grounds for calling for his removal, they now have plenty of ammunition. Simply put, they don't give a shit that he helps fuel anti-Semitic and other white supremacist terrorism. (Charlottesville isn't even the only incident, just the most heinous when it comes to Jewish people, iirc.)

@Jeffrey Canzani - You do know why the GOP has traditionally "supported" Israel, right? It has nothing to do with support for Jewish people and everything to do with the belief that in order for Jesus to return to Earth, Israel has to be a Jewish state. Of course, once he does return, any Jews that fail to convert to Christianity are condemned to an eternity in hell. Also, being a supporter of Israel is not the same thing as being an ally of Jewish people in your own nation. Apocalyptic Christian ideas notwithstanding.

you have done more to educate the cis community about trans and gender issues than any single person I can think of.

It took me 30 minutes to dig this up, but I finally found the term; second-order punishment. This can be added as another fundamental property of cancel culture. In second-order punishment, not only is a perceived norm violator punished, but *anyone who fails to punish the accused is also punished*. This massively reinforces the punishment behavior, as people are highly motivated to engage in whatever punishment is normative (in this case cancellation) for fear of their own punishment.

Hey, Contrapoints! I know this video has its years but I want to tell you thank you, thank you a lot for making a video about this issue. I was cancelled by a small online community that I kinda used as a support to get on with things in my life. It was a really scarring experience, and while I know that my understanding of today's world issues was a little insensitive at the time, I felt the punishment for my actions was way too harsh. I feel validated, respected and learned a lot by watching this video after spending years on a limbo reflecting over everything. You have helped in my healing journey. You are a gem!

I am a nonbinary person, and I found out two years ago, about a few months after I started watching your videos. I have spent the past year and a half talking to professionals (who agree that I am in fact nonbinary), have came out multiple times (to the exact same people), have spent hours upon hours trying explain why I can't "just be a masculine woman," why I want "to mutilate my own body," etc, and even now no one believes or accepts it. Watching your videos on nonbinary people helped me figure out my own identity, and I feel hurt that you are being dragged "for the sake of nonbinary people" when for me personally, your videos helped me so much in learning to accept my own nonbinary identity. I look forward to your videos every month, and hope that this stuff doesn't get you too down!
