A good cop was fired for doing the right thing. Cenk Uygur, host of The Young Turks, breaks it down. Tell us what you think in the comment section below. www.tytnetwork.com/join
“After responding to a report of a domestic incident on May 6 in Weirton, W.Va., then-Weirton police officer Stephen Mader found himself confronting an armed man.
Immediately, the training he had undergone as a Marine to look at “the whole person” in deciding if someone was a terrorist, as well as his situational police academy training, kicked in and he did not shoot.
“I saw then he had a gun, but it was not pointed at me,” Mr. Mader recalled, noting the silver handgun was in the man’s right hand, hanging at his side and pointed at the ground.
The man was Ronald D. “R.J.” Williams Jr., 23, of Pittsburgh, and what happened in the seconds after Mr. Mader’s initial decision is still being investigated by Mr. Williams’ family as well as the West Virginia Civil Liberties Union.
Mr. Mader, who was standing behind Mr. Williams’ car parked on the street, said he then “began to use my calm voice.”

This is a huge issue. But it isn't even just training. It's that we've let the laws be changed to this point. Where it's legal for them to kill just about anyone just as long as they "feel threatened," etc. Wake up folks! The funny thing is...things are sliding this way, and a bunch of people want to make sure that we can't have guns any longer. Because we "don't need them" and the police will take care of us? Riiiiiiight.

ESPECIALLY IF HE IS BLACK, SHOOT. In West Virginia and in the POLICE DEPARTMENT, THE THREAT was never an UNLOADED GUN, because the guys that shot up the theater in Colorado with a gun lived, the man that shot up that Black church in South Carolina with a gun lived, and any MASS SHOOTING THAT INVOLVED WHITE MEN LIVED, and NO COPS WERE FIRED. Thus, in this case the THREAT WAS NEVER THE GUN, IT WAS THE BLACK MAN that he failed to SHOOT!.

If you as a criminal country invades other countries and murders their citizen and lying to the public than those politicians and criminals must be put in jail, right? But nope, not in murica. Here they defend their terrorist state and their corrupted politicians, they defend the murdering of civilians in other countries, they defend the invasion of countries (I mean they voted for Trump a racist, sexist scum who would have sex with his own daughter) and for that - justice is served - let it self do that. And we are seeing things like this about cops and citizens conflict all over the US. On every news you would found these stuff and that makes me so happy! Keep it up murica - do us a favor and burn by murdering your own! Like all empires this criminal empire will fall too! Still waiting for that brave country to bomb the shit out of murica!

Both sides seem to agree on this point: he didn't communicate with the other two cops, warning them that the guy had a gun. Yes, they might then just shot the subject, but he was obligated to inform them before anything else that the guy was armed. I could understand canning him just for that. The gun not being loaded is irrelevant, because that could only be determined in hindsight.

The point also is that they feel like they have already proven themselves. There are cops who join thinking its going to be like TV busting bad guys and that is the wrong reason to join. They lack the discipline that the military instills. You do not join law enforcement to get some action. You join to serve the community. Give them the Barney Fife treatment and just give them one bullet. They will be a lot less inclined to shoot.

Problem is that in some states you don't even have to have finished highschool to join a police department, provided you were a soldier. And regrettably that does mean that because of how recruitment for the military works, you run quite a high risk of getting kinda dumb veterans wearing a badge. And they are expected to know the law and get quick overview of stressful situations. Plus not all soldiers who return home are well adjusted, many have anger issues. I'm sure this cop is nothing like that. I applaud his actions. perfect officer from where I'm sitting. But I fear there are too few of his kind.

How can anyone, ANYONE not admit that this is a recurring case. Day after day. And just blow it off as either, "Oh well they had to." Imagine their wife or their husband who had fallen under depression, become suicidal, got SHOT BY THE POLICE. And the reaction to it all is just a "Threat TERMINATED. JOB WELL DONE." This is sick. Nicolette Del Palacio It's quite the opposite for majority of people. The only reason why you see so much hatred is because you're constantly searching for it. When you seek hatred, then that's exactly what you'll get. That's the problem with people today, they search for the things to dislike just to get their blood boiling and pushes them to change their shallow mind and they end up believing that's all there is, but that's simply not true at all, you're just simply lacking in perspective. Instead of focusing on trying to find some stupid reason to hate, maybe you should search for happiness as you'll only dwell and rot in the world of hatred as you'd be too weak to do anything about it in the first place.

It doesn't matter what, they are there to find tnt felony, and if they don't get enough of them in a certain time period, or enough misdemeanors, then they agree FIRED. That right there, is a damn conflict of interest. That right there, is a quota. I have a police scanner, and I listen to it now and again, and I hear different cops, calling in license plates back to back all day, everyday... and then when the license plate shows that there is a warrant or no license driver driving the car I hear them call back about 5 minutes later in a traffic stop. those cops are calling in people's plates looking for the trouble and pulling them over without reasonable cause. f****** b******* The judges, cops, and prosecutor's in my City are corrupt. Protect: that means wear bullet proof vests, carry a loaded gun at all times, and don't be afraid to use it on whoever you feel the urge to. But most importantly serve: treat yourself to donuts, coffee, and human punching bags whenever you feel the slightest temptation, or better yet human firearm targets...

They do it all the time. I'm 40 and when i was 17 i had a horrible bout with depression and anxiety. I was in such a hole that i was actually scared i might kill myself. I knew i needed help and i just needed someone to talk to so i called a suicide hotline. Low and behold, i end up with 5 car loads of cops walking up to my door WITH GUNS DRAWN! i freaked tf out cuz i was thinking in my head that i need help, i don't need to fkin die so I hid in my crawlspace and pretended no one was home until they left. I was scared to fkin death when they showed up like that and no weapon at all was even mentioned on the phone, just that I was so in a hole that I was contemplating suicide. Needless to say, I've NEVER nor will i EVER CONTACT ANYONE IF I FELT THAT WAY AGAIN ESPECIALLY A SUICIDE HOTLINE AND DEF NOT THE MOB IN BLUE. I also make sure that if someone comes to me feeling suicidal I stress intensely how they SHOULD NEVER CONTACT THE POLICE OR A HOTLINE NO MATTER HOW BAD IT GETS! CALL ME AND WE'LL TALK! looking back, knowing what I know now, I'm glad I didn't answer the door or I would've most certainty be killed on the spot

You very obviously know nothing about police and only learn from the media. Cops don’t shoot people just for the fact that they’re black or the cop wants to kill someone. The cops know they have nothing to gain from doing so

It should be a requirement that cops go through the military b4 joining, that way there will be jobs for those military personnel coming home & those that are in the reserve. Military train their people to be more discipline than the police academy.
@mystyc0
@mystyc0 7 жыл бұрын
Until recently, that was considered to be a very bad idea. Just think of the phrase "militarized police." What we are experiencing now is a bit unusual, in that law enforcement officers with military backgrounds are better prepared than their civilian trained coworkers. This really is not how it tends to work in human society for much of human history, otherwise we wouldn't even have a division between civilian and military law enforcement. Stated in a different way, our criminal justice system is so fucked up that we would probably be safer under military rule. At some point, more people will come to take that as the literal truth, and they will then try to usher in an age of military rule.

PTSD would make the police 10 times worse, people have to be in the military for years before they come back. You would have officers feeling like they're back in the war zone, bad idea
@mystyc0
@mystyc0 7 жыл бұрын
Call Me Soul , yeah, but the point is that even with PTSD flashbacks, they'll probably shoot fewer people. Compare that regular cops who are basically thugs playing out their military-commando movie fantasies in American cities without any real training.

I don't think Cenk or OP were calling this a murder, but I think the PD's eagerness to get rid of the officer is definitely suspicious, given as they normally have a pretty high tolerance for misbehavior. So, honest question: can you elaborate on his long list of issues separate from this incident?

+Lycan Broadcasting Network They came up with a bunch of reasons to get rid of him. Cops lie on record, oaths, tickets, all kinds of things all the time. They call it "covering your ass." Its part of what they are trained to do so the department doesnt get sued all the time;

I think the cop deserved to be fired, you can't have a liability like him in the force. What if he does it again? He's not just putting his life in danger but others. I agree with you guys that he did the right thing but we only knew this with hindsight, it was a very stupid and risky move the cop pulled and could have easily gone very very wrong.
