The Now is safe 99,999% of the time. Everything you imagine can go wrong is by definition not the Now, but your imagination of a hypothetical (near or distant) future. The immediate present moment is you safe haven, your sanctuary and your anchor if you want more peace and calm in your life. The Now is the actuality of your life, everything else is thought - either memory (past) or fantasy (future). And thought is almost always a heavier burden than your actual life. The human imagination is the biggest creator of our worries, but the upside is that a vivid imagination - if tamed and controlled - can be an instrument of constructive creativitity and be an assett in ones life. Many people I know who suffers from anxiety are also very intelligent and creative.

@MindVersusMisery3 жыл бұрын
@@Dewdrops-e1p And my point is that most people most of the time are not in a physically threatening situation, but our threat systems are active - chronically - for those people anyways. And the way to acknowledge and understand the difference between an actual threat and a perceived threat is to wake up to the actuality of the present moment. If you - however - find yourself in an abusive situation it is of vital importance to remove yourself from the situation.

This video change the way I perceive being well. Coping is no longer enough for me and somehow I knew it but I didn't have the words for it. It really helps to hear it from someone else. To me, coping is like deciding to stay in a war without winning the war. It helps by providing a timeout, to prolong survival but it does not resolve. What I want is for the war to be over, with the least amount of sustained damages.
@Mansimaheta775 ай бұрын
You are right. It gives us time out during crisis and prevents our brain's response for a bit. But it isn't the solution. Now I am not saying people shouldn't practice these or these are useless. The point is to see coping skills as a way to stop overstimulating your nervous system and to avoid further physiological and emotional damage in crisis. And once we get a healthy control not to give in everytime we are depressed and anxious, we can start focusing on skills and habits that actually helps us heal, overcome these situations.

Coping skills may not be great mechanisms in the long term but in the short term they are magnificent, especially for those of us who have none, never learnt there were other ways, and always react (usually badly). Thank you for listing them and not glossing over them as irrelevent or saying 'that everyone knows this stuff'. Some of us don't know this stuff.

Thank you for stressing that coping skills could help in short-term, but once they are used to calm down and refresh my mind, I need to work on solving the issue itself long-term. Otherwise, the coping skill can turn into an addiction and introduce another problem in addition to the root cause. I have in mind 2 people, who I can contact in case of severe mental crisis. I already did once in the past and they helped me. I don't have a 3rd one, though... The skills, which I could use in future, are: doing some puzzle (I've been doing such in the past, but more rarely lately - I can use this activity as a coping skill); doing some coloring (I have such a book and some color pens and never finished it, so I can use it for such cases); listening to calming music (I have such a playlist and used it before - it worked well). I can put the puzzles and the coloring tools in one "emergency" box for handling emotional crisis in future. :) Regarding a skill, which I can do when I am not at home - the washing of the face with cold water, or taking a walk outside seem good. Also hugging somebody, although it won't work in professional environment (maybe). :D

There is a meditation that I use that is awesome. It is called Trigram’s Pain Relief Meditation which is misleading. It really helps you relax. From the beginning of it I take a deep breath in through my nose and hold fir 7 seconds while thinking “I release all my tension and stress“ then exhale slowly while releasing the tension. Then I repeat the same breathe and hold twice more saying the second time “I release all fear and confusion.“ The third time I say “I release all anger, resentment, and frustration.“ Priceless!

Hey dude - I reckon it’s key that we don’t see anxiety as a threat or even a bad thing... something that we have to survive or fight - this turns our fight / flight response up more, producing more.... anxiety! The key I believe is utter utter acceptance (in the words of Claire Weekes - check her out, she’s amazing) of our anxiety... it’s as we accept and experience our anxiety fully without fighting it or running away, our brain experiences it calming down naturally, and we learn that anxiety is actually quite safe and normal - nothing to fear or fight or run away from 👍👍

I tendered the words from the tears of the same, But they dried as the dawn came upon. They came to me in the sleeping hours And they whispered to me in the moonlight: "What did you reap when you floated the keep, And whom did you trust with the key?" I buried my head in a cushion of shame - And I woke to find them all gone.

My husband died suddenly 5 months ago. I have two little kids. I am in the middle of legal issues due to the Estate and him dying without a Will. I don’t know how to cope with the massive amount of stress I am dealing with. I am worried about paying my bills while the lawyers figure things out. The rollercoaster of emotions is creating PTSD. Plus the possible trauma from watching my husband die in front of me and having to perform CPR on him. I am seeing a therapist but at $180 per 50 minutes I don’t get far each session and I feel like I can’t afford to “waste” money on it. I absolutely hate my life right now. Hi Emma. I have a question please. I get constantly upset (heart races, breathing gets shallow, dizziness disorder gets worse) whenever I hear my very close next door neighbors 15 ft away (3 loud kids, dogs, music, unfriendly parents) noise. They're outside constantly. I also resent that no other homes have neighbors like this and they seem to have peace and quiet. I hear them in all my rooms except for one. I do white noise, (having to do it all the time doesn't seem fair) but I still have so much anger as they've never heard noise from me in 3 years. They screamed at me the one time I asked them respectfully to be quieter. Can you please consider doing a video to help with this? Thanks.

Wow, this is the first time I've seen a warning or disclaimer on coping strategies, but I don't disagree at all. I tend to avoid my problems and have acquired some coping behaviors that border on addictions!

In a way,Coping is a type of Avoidance! May be that’s why you’re not a proponent of? As I’m sure you know , most of us ( in accordance to the cultural/social and/or religious backgrounds ) were brought up with one kind or another of coping. I’ll tell from a personal experience and observation, at times it fails badly!

I have a question, I'm a bit confused. Following your videos so far, using coping skills can help in a moment of crysis but then it conflicts with the other video about willingness. If for say, I'm having now a panic attack than coping skills are a way to try to press it down and ignore it. isn't that just making it worst? What should the process actually be? first willingness and than coping skills? Thanks a lot!

But what if we don't know what the problem is that is causing our anxiety/depression?
@jammyjam30743 жыл бұрын
Don’t stress on it too much. I told my therapist the same thing that I’m struggling on finding the source and birth of what caused this anxiety. But she basically responded by telling me perhaps instead of focusing so much on diving back into the darkfoggy past trying to wander in the dark we instead turn around and build up new bridges and heights towards the light. That way along the way we can then get a better view from above of what we may be searching for i regards to the future and past. And That instead of trying to rid and return the anxiety/depression to its source, we acknowledge it and take along with us on our journey. It wants to keep us down there with them but when we decide to say hey, I’m going This Way wether you like it or not, bits of it it will slowly run away while you journey forward/up. And sometimes you may get a glimpse at where that piece of anxiety/Depression went to as you get a better view from your newly built ladder. It’s a hard and tough journey, but once you realize that and to not fight and be angry at your anxiety/depression but instead be gentle and realize it’s a part of you. It gets easier and easier and like a wild animal/pet it starts to get tamer. I like to think of myself as my own superhero and gear up for battle. It’s ok to not know what the problem source is right away and tell yourself that. We’ll get through this🙏🏽💙💙

To everyone who's struggling right now, please know that JESUS LOVES YOU. HE DIED FOR YOU. He wants to help you and give you peace. Please surrender your burdens to Him and allow Him to move in your life. "Because he loves Me,” says the Lord, “I will rescue him; I will protect him, for he acknowledges My Name. He will call on Me, and I will answer him; I will be with him in trouble, I will deliver him and honor him." Probably my top coping technique is to get out and ride my motorcycle... It's meditative to me... AND yes, I know, at first blush, it sounds ridiculous... How could I possibly find it meditative to be sitting on a 500 pound missile at 90 mph with no more than leather and some sheet-metal bits between me and the other (often) two-ton monsters on the road... or the road itself... or the various other things whipping past, big and small... right? "Slow hands, fast bike"... That's a regular sentiment of bikers and moto-gp racers all over the world. You can't just kick or grab at the brakes and stop a motorcycle... It doesn't work, and attempting to do so WILL crash the bike. You absolutely must work those brakes smoothly... first with the rear (under your foot) and then as the forks compress and "load" the front tire, you smoothly and progressively squeeze the front brake... letting off the throttle (handle grip) as you slow, and then clutch and down-shift (left hand lever and left toe pressing down)... Until you find Neutral or just "ride the clutch" to finally stop the bike... and put it into first gear... Lose concentration, and you break loose, wash out, fall, slide... tumble... crash... burn... simple as that. ...AND that's only to stop the bike... an essential but "elementary" skill that you absolutely MUST know before you get on the street. SO I'm beginning (with this video) to understand WHY it's so powerful for me to ride... Not just because I get the wind rushing all over me (feel it even through the leathers and helmet)... It's immediately being "mindful"... You can't ride worth a tinker's damn if you're not present, paying attention to what you're doing and where you're going and what's going on around you. It's impossible... You can't ride well if you're tense. You have to hold the grips with about the force as you'd grip a banana... arms loose so you can flap albows like "chicken wings"... AND ALWAYS Look where you want the bike to go... Yeah, that last one gets HARD sometimes... If you're scared of the guardrail or the ditch, and you stare at it, you're GOING to run right into it. If a vehicle "pops up" into view and you focus on it, you'll hit it. If you get scared of running wide, and look at a tree you don't want to hit... you'll hit it... You HAVE to pry those eyes away from the "scary things" and find the clear spaces... LOOK THERE... and the bike will go there, when you've got your skills up. It's literally like a dance, full of grace and skill... washes by the fresh air... surrounded by the scenery and part of your environment... The "trick" if there is one, is to be SMOOTH... easy into the controls and easy out of them. SO it's also an ACTIVE skill, because riding DOES take a little more active effort and participation than driving. You look, you lean, you press the handlebar, and the bike responds... You often have a completely separate job and duty for EVERY limb, like with just stopping... right hand is getting off the throttle, right foot is stepping into brake, right hand follows squeezing as the forks compress (brakes and timing) left toe touches the gear shift, and left hand works the clutch... ALL at the same time, and keeping the rhythm to avoid stalling or dropping the bike... straighten up if needed for the last few feet or so... or you'll flop over and slide and feel silly.... It's also about reading traffic around you... Knowing where and when you have space to get around and overtake, or when to merge, or noticing that traffic is snarling up ahead, so you can react to that instead of waiting on the brake lights of the vehicle directly in front of you for reaction "all last second and everything"... It's about noticing someone merging into your lane before you're on top of them... so you can back off... etc...etc....etc... Because NOBODY is going to notice you first. Sure, it's dangerous... The consequences can be horrific... BUT for me, it's worth it. I ride conservatively, so it's relatively easy to stay safe out there... even at 90 mph... AND quite often the view is SPECTACULAR... ;o)

Not to rely on coping skills to actually fix the problem is sound advice but what if the problem can't be fixed and that's what is causing your distress? What then?
@sidpastore42393 жыл бұрын
I watched the CBT course on Great Courses Plus and the lecturer says for problems that can’t be solved you could try to shift your mindset about them or use somatic quieting techniques (like deep breathing or yoga.) I would also add maybe the problem can’t be solved but maybe there’s a way to deal with it less often? I’m thinking of in my case I deal with discrimination. It doesn’t go away, and it can be very stressful at work, but I make sure my free time is spent as much as possible AWAY from people who would make shitty comments.
