Always bugged me that they set up the conflict between Bellatrix and Nevil from almost the very start, and then she starts major beef with Harry after killing his godfather, and then neither Harry or Nevil really see her in the final battle, instead she’s taken out by Molly who narratively has little to nothing to do with Bellatrix. Super unsatisfying end to that arch, honestly think Nevil shoulda gotten to take her out with the sword or something instead of the snake. But my favorite one is the Order of the Phoenix, so what do I know

I also had that problem even with the Deathly Hallows book, at least if not Harry or Neville, make it Ginny or Hermione or a collective effort to show how powerful these girls are together, if all 3 at their most powerful in this series can't take down Bellatrix, I can't take any of them seriously when it comes to a fight.

The parts they cut out with lupin in the deathly hallows are the ones that hurt the most for me. Lupin is one of the few characters that Harry fully trusts in the books. He’s constantly going to him for help. So when he shows up at grimmauld place and Harry refuses his help because he thinks that lupin should be with tonks it’s a reallly good moment that shows Harry has grown up from the student that needed his teachers help to a man who can think his own thoughts. It also makes the shell cottage moment when he shows up and asks Harry to be godfather feel like a momentary break from all the doom and gloom in the book. I particularly love the line in the book” it seemed that Harry would be as reckless a godfather to teddy lupin as Sirius black was to Harry”.

15:48 this is not JK’s problem, but the adaptations problem. In the book it’s perfectly clear that Dumbledore already knew about Horcruxes and that Vol already made some. (He destroyed the ring over the summer for that very reason). What he didn’t know was how many horcruxes potentially had.
@79treefrog

@@aquacyanide Yes but there's a constant bleed between the books and the films in this video, and it's never clear what exactly is being criticised--and any problem is laid at the feet of JK's writing. @dowfreak7

@@aquacyanide And that would be a fair point, if he didn't often act like it was the book's fault the movie left something out. I mean he legit says that books 5 and 6 should be added together, since they're so empty. When book 5 is LITERALLY the longest fucking book in the series and 6 is about something entirely different. The books aren't perfect and there's plenty of shit to criticize, plot issues to point out etc. But saying "he couldn't have known about Horcruxes before Harry tells him", when he already has a fucked-up rotten hand from fiddling with the horcrux ring is kind of stupid.

The reason the one death eater fell back after killing Hedwig is because he realized it was the real Harry since he had Hedwig with him, so he went to tell Voldemort.
@bloodyneptune
@bloodyneptune 2 күн бұрын
It was because he used expelliarmus, Lupin tells him its become his 'signature spell' after using it against Voldemort in the graveyard. Thats why hes questioning why Harry used it at all and telling him "the time for disarming is over". Which plays directly into Voldemorts death, because the only spell Harry could have possibly used to win that last duel _was_ explelliarmus, and so being true to himself and his morals is how he wins in the end

The books have one detail that really makes them better: Harry in the finale talks to Voldemort and explains he died for everybody in Hogwarts, protecting them with as powerful a spell as his mom did him. And the fact he has the allegiance of the elder wand is just the cherry on top.
@saruboss18
@saruboss18 3 ай бұрын
Honestly, I was happy that the movie left it out because that protection spell sounds like such a cheat code. It was fine when Lily's sacrifice put the spell on Harry, but him putting it on everyone in hogwarts just made me spit my tea when I read it. I think wand allegiance part was enough.
@sebastiankrutschoff842
@sebastiankrutschoff842 3 ай бұрын
@@saruboss18 something that was established in the first couple books, talked about a lot by the plan maker of the whole story, Albus Dumbledore, is not quite the same as something that is completely random and seems to contradict the early books, as the wand allegiance did. Trust me, both have flaws, I just like setup payoff enough to defend the protection spell. Especially since it does not really change what happens. Voldemort is in a state to be defeated. Harry figuring out a way to stop the dying is in character and at that point I am on board. But everyone has their own standards and lines they draw 💁🏼‍♂️

Actually, Dumbledore knew that voldemort had horrocruxes since Harry's second year, and in the modified memory he had, Tom Riddle asked about it, so Dumbledore knew, hell, he even knew since book 2 that Harry was a horrocrux, and that voldemort had made more than one, since he had been searching and investigating voldemort for years now, which is how he had the other memories of his kills. What he actually found out in the memory is how many horrocruxes Voldemort had created. He was hoping for 2 or 3 (diary, ring and the one in the cave), excluding Harry, which was accidental, but then he found that they were 6, 2 that were already destroyed, one that he had guess the location, and 3 more, plus Harry. That's why he was shocked. He knew he had little time, and he realized he wouldn't be able to help Harry destroy them all before he died. But what he did want was to at least get one more before he died, so that Harry only had 3 more left, and Harry only needed to find two others, because they knew nagini was one. He also knew, because of the memories he obtained, that it would be something meaningful to Tom, and that it would probably be the hufflepuff Cup or the slytherin locket he found in the cave, but he knew both were horrocruxes now. He also knew the remainder horrocrux must be something from ravenclaw or gryffindor. I don't think Rowling knew from the first book she was going to do horrocruxes, at least when she was writing it, but by the second one, she already knew. Altho I agree that the six film is so filler that it drags the whole story a lot.

Man, I find the way Voldemort died in the film very disappointing, because it misses the whole point of showing that, after all the horcruxes had been destroyed, Voldemort was again just a mortal man, like any other, he couldn’t win over death, which was the whole search of his life, in the book his body falls on the ground and there it stays, a corpse like the others who died in the battle, the way it was portrayed in the movie with him withering and fading like dust kinda made him a bigger deal than he actually was. Visually it is nice, but it does miss the point!!

Also Harry and Hermione take polyjuice potion when visiting Godric's Hollow at Christmas. There's just a lot of use of polyjuice potion in the 7th book and it works in the that format but it would definitely be too awkward in movie format to be looking at random people much of the time. But yeah, there was other security measures too and they discussed in the book how it was good for their mental health/morale to have at least one night that felt like normal life which is very human imo.

At the risk of revealing how much of a nerd I am: In Half Blood Prince, Dumbledore *does* know about the horcruxes. What he and Harry find out with Slughorn's memory is that he intended to make 6 of them. This may be a case of movie pollution though, but I haven't seen the movie in a while so I don't remember. Also, Dumbledore's plan with Harry and Slughorn didn't really need Harry to do good at Potions at all, since Dumbledore knew Slughorn well enough to know he would want to "collect" him regardless of how well he did in class. Slughorn took an interest in Harry because he was famous, not because he was good at Potions.

Personally Chamber if Secrets is one of my favourites: I remember how the light of every scene got darker as the narrative drew closer to the Chamber, and then they literally fly back towards the light and end up in Dumbledore’s office where it’s all bright and colourful again 😁 though Prizoner of Azkaban is absolutely my favourite! The worst for me (by a long way) is the Half Blood Prince, though the whole bit from when they get to the cave is pretty awesome! 👌

Hermione(while being annoying with the SPEW stuff) and Dumbledore - that's valid. Cedric is equally as underwritten in the book as he is in the movie. Crouch adds a lot of needless complexity to the story. Even though the movie is kind of meh, the book is very overrated in my opinion, it does have exciting mystery elements but some parts are so poorly executed, it's sometimes frustrating to read.

Everybody being pissed all the time at one another was exactly the tone of the fifth book. I've read it over 20 years ago now so my memory might be a little off, but I distinctly remember how much darker the overall tone was compared to previous chapters. The piling trauma these characters go trough (remember, Harry just witnessed a friend die in front of him on top of all else he's constantly dealing with), plus puberty hitting them hard... I remember being kind of sad and shocked to see characters I've grown to love so much over the course of 4 books now, and who are above all else intensely loyal friends, become this bickering crowd of constantly angry and resentful people. And I love this movie because it exactly hit that tone and made me remember how much my 12 year old self was a little traumatized to go through this phase of the story with my favorite book heroes. And also, when Sirius died, I cried for like a week. But I appreciate a few of your comments on the movie and the series, it definitely suffered from some slow and underdeveloped subplots and storylines.

@@Sogggysthe reason people don’t like it is because compared to the book it’s such an odd adaptation. The half blood Prince serves as a way to expand on Tom riddles backstory, and also develop Harry’s love story with Ginny. But they fail to do both, and they didn’t even bother with Tom riddles backstory. They gave us one memory out of 3-4 we got in the book and barely gave any info. To have your big villain in the movie franchsie to lose so much characterisation cos the movie makers decided to focus on the romance in half blood Prince is weird. 15:10 Dumbledore does learn of Horcruxes way before this. He suspected that Voldemort had made Horcruxes when Harry couldn't be killed and had it confirmed to him when Harry brought him the diary in second year, and when Slughorn gave him the altered memory. Dumbledore has had the memory of Tom asking about Horcruxes for years, just not the full thing. The only reason he needed Harry to get the unaltered memory was because he didn't know how many Horcruxes there were. Also, he's literally hunting Horcruxes way before the school term starts. He finds and destroys the ring Horcrux during the summer holidays. It makes perfect sense why Dumbledore is discussing Horcruxes with Snape before Harry's sixth year. This is not a plot hole at all. I agree with a lot of your other points but it's a little annoying that as a long-term fan of the series, you made such a huge error in your critique.
@kawadashogo8258
@kawadashogo8258 Жыл бұрын
In regard to your second paragraph, I think the biggest problem that's causing him to make these errors is because he's conflating the movies way too much with the books and Rowling's writing. The movie adaptations made A LOT of changes, and there was quite a bit of extremely narratively important material from the books that never made it into the films. Quite a lot of things that end up confusing or contradictory in the movies are explained in the books. I'm not saying the books have no flaws of their own, they do, but the movies have far more. Someone relying on just the movies to understand the story is never going to understand it fully. Just as an example, take the fact that the third movie never even explained the origins of the goddamn Marauder's Map. And yet in later movies they went on calling Pettigrew Wormtail, never having explained that.

Goblet of Fire is my number 1 for one reason that can be exemplified by Filch repeatedly firing the canon to start the event before Dumbledore is finished with the explanation, and the resulting "oopsy" shrug from Filch. This movie had an amazingly dark and dry humorous tone throughout that I think really powerfully bridges the gap between the lighter, fantastical, more child-like world of the first 2 films, and the more sombre, serious, grown up world starting with the 6th. I feel like Prizoner of Azkhaban sets this tone up as well, but it's still got more slapstickesque elements that give it a childlike feel, whereas in GoF the tone is more serious and edgy, but still humorous, capitalizing on the last installment in the series that could take somewhat of a jovial tone overall. I hear your criticisms about the harsh tone shift at the end, but for me, overall, GoF will always be my favorite to watch.

Refuse to change certain character beats that she *did* plan, even after the story goes to so many places suggesting a better path. And Exhibit A is Harry not becoming the DADA professor even though after leading Dumbledore's Army that is THE most obvious thing to do with him. But no, she decided he was going to be a cop, so a cop he became.

Also would've been symbolic because Harry becoming DADA teacher for a year or longer would've broken the curse Voldemort put on the position after Dumbledore refused to hire him for it. A permanent hire there would've shown how Voldemort was really 'gone' and then a new teacher could build something lasting for Hogwarts and for future generations of wizards, after the instability of the war. :(

After the books were finished she decided to get defensive and hated being called out for anything so she just made out she had a plan for every plothole. Just admit you made a mistake it’s fine.

1. Prisoner of Azkaban 2. Goblet of Fire 3. Chamber of Secrets 4. Sorcerer's Stone -----These top 4 feel like classic Harry Potter to me. I like these movies the most because they are able to establish that foreboding sense of doom and looming evil while still maintaining that sense of whimsical adventure and magic. The next 4 in the series get a lot darker and when I think back about them, I can't help but feel a little despair. While the more serious tone does a good job in establishing the stakes, it also loses a bit of the fun. Now while I took the overall "aura" (I couldn't quite find the right word) of these movies into account, I tried to be objective as possible with my ranking. So I still believe the second half of the series doesn't quite hold up to the same standard as the first half narratively. The plot becomes more convoluted and with that the plot holes become more apparent as well. Characters have seem to have major growth and recession without it feeling earned, and sometimes you can tell that there's chunks of connective story building tissue that's missing from the books. Probably also because it is around this time that the books start getting a lot longer too. So for the second half of my ranking: 5. Order of the Phoenix (very depressing, too much of it consumed by this nagging sense of foreboding that can be quite exhausting) 6. Deathly Hallows Pt. 2 (Giant Marvel battle scene, but still pretty rewarding to see the payoff of a story I had followed since I was just a kid) 7. Half Blood Prince (Felt very incomplete, and seems to have way too many "convenient" plot devices to help make things work) 8. Deathly Hallows Pt. 1 (Honestly, don't have much bad to say about this one- it felt like one of the truest adaptions of it's source material- unfortunately that source material also happens to revolve around the most boring part of Harry's journey yet. It was an absolute snore-fest.)

I should have commented this on the last video, but I wanted to share my opinion on why Harry doesn't use magic in this series as much as Ron or especially Hermione do. My theory is that Harry, specifically in the earlier movies, uses more physical methods of defense because we tend to fall back on things we are comfortable with in times of crisis or stress. Pre-Hogwarts Harry was probably used to fighting off Dudley and his friends with whatever he could get his hands on (bc he was a small, scrawny kid). When Harry is fighting something like a giant spider off, he's not really thinking about each and every spell he could be casting, he's just gonna use whatever he has to get it off. I know that Hermione was also not raised around magic, but she tends to rely on her intelligence because it's what she's good at, which includes her knowledge and practice of spells. And as mentioned in this video, the older Harry gets, the more he relies on spells and magic because he gets more comfortable with them. Anyways, this is long but that's why I don't really think the argument that Harry should use more magic completely holds up!
@kingcyclops4079

@allyli1718

Yup, this was even a thing in th books for Hermione, who often thought of solutions but forgot she could use magic enact those solutions, which was why Ron was an integral part of the trio as a native wizard. The movies gave a lot of his magic/wizard related roles to Hermione (and Harry as well), as noted by Quinn Curio’s video on Ron.

@@kingcyclops4079 his being the main character is the problem honestly, since the story is told from his perspective, it’s better to have him be more realistic so the reader is able to put themselves into his shoes, it’s easier for a regular person to relate to Harry that way, and making the reader relate to the main character is creative writing rule 1

Chamber of Secrets is absolutely my favorite because it's so delightfully campy and it introduces such amazing concepts to the series, and the fact the rest of it doesn't capitalize on them isn't at all the movie's fault. Like oh yeah Harry has to learn to accept death to win in book 7... In book 2 he had already done that. you could've specifically made a point about how it's different, in 2 he's self sacrificing because he has little self worth because of years of abuse, in 7 he's struggling to do it as effortlessly because he grew as a person, but... that's the thing. It's not said. That pinch of effort isn't put in. Instead of being a parallel, it's instead the character having regressed compared to when he was twelve or whatever. You could've also played on an angle of guilt from Ginny over her possession. Even if she wasn't in control of her actions, she could still feel responsible because trauma and stuff. So much wasted potential. So yeah. CoS is my favorite because it brought in the most potential to the series, but JK did as JK does and squandered it later down the line. Not CoS's fault.

Such as his criticism in the last video of it not making sense that Voldemort would want to kill Harry, even though he needs his blood to make a new body. For two reasons, this is a dumb criticism. One, he could just take Harry’s blood after killing him. Two, at that point his plan was to use the Philosopher’s stone to make a new body, so killing Harry to take the stone makes perfect sense.

The one on the train looked perfect, but later they didn't feel as threatening. I guess they didn't want them to look too much like the Nazguls in Lotr which came out only a few years earlier.

when the trailer for POA came out and I saw the hand on the train door… maybe one of the most iconic moments ever

The way they’re described in PoA has always stuck with me too. I’ll never be able to escape “The dementor slowly, lovingly prized Harry’s hands away from his face” just... Hoo man! That’s some stuff!

On the horcruxes part, this is largely an issue with the movies rather than the books. In the books, Dumbledore already has a strong belief that Voldemort has multiple horcruxes. In HBP, he is just looking for confirmation and specifically what objects the horcruxes are and maybe where they're located. In the movie, they seem to want to make it super dramatic so he reacts like it's a surprise.
